Plot Synopsis

Story & Characters

This anime completely blew me away in terms of story, animation, and emotion.
Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien wins my award for Best Drama/Romance Anime of the year 2003. Let`s hope AIR can top this honor in the year 2005. 2004 was a shoddy year for bishoujo game to anime conversions.

STORY:

The story has much more plot twists then I could remember, but it was all so emotionally driven that it feels like you`re IN the story. It`s about this dweeb Takayuki who is forced to choose between two women. This may sound simple, but the anime takes this and expands it into a riveting story about love, betrayal, emotions flying and a bittersweet ending.

CHARACTER:

The most realistic part of the anime. Takayuki is the only generic oh can`t make a decision character. Haruka and Mitsuki were both well designed and fit the story well. Shinji is the typical necessary gay buddy for the main protagonist, but becomes too involved in the end. Ah, but sadly to the anime roots, they have to introduce screen time to all the women from the game, such as the waitresses and the nurses. The restaurant waitresses, however, needs improvement. Although the family restaurant part of the anime was for comic relief, I still found it grating that they wasted time on those scenes when it could have been used for the better on, say character development in the high school years.

ANIMATION:

Ok, this part is a bit biased, but a 9 is well deserved, considering that it was a low-budget 13 episode anime. Characters move fluidly, there`s barely any repeated cels, and almost none of the generic girls-hair-flutter-in-the-wind situations. (And when there is one, it fits perfectly into the plot) Colors were vivid, and running animation (when there is) isn`t crap shuffling like Da Capo. I liked the character designs, very neutral and appealing to the eyes. Although the characters were a bit bustier than average, it didn`t detract the viewer too much. Facial expressions were done superbly well, and the seiyuus matched emotions perfectly.

Sound

Beautiful. The music will blow you away. They play the right tracks at the right time, although a few of them sounds like they were ripped off a synthesizer. Opening and Ending were both sung well by Haruka`s seiyuu, and the last song, Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien, perfectly fits the emotions dealt in the last episode. The Hizashi arrangement was just simply perfect for the mood at the 14th episode. I can still hum it now and then, as remember the truly emotional bits of this anime.

Hizashi ~Arrangement~ is a beautiful piano score, very nicely done.

The OP is a bit generic, with it's genki J-pop style, but the ED makes up for it with a soothing chorus and nicely done backgrounds. (Hey at least the ED makes the viewer calm down after the roller coaster of episode 2)

Presentation

Watch it, then watch it again. It`s the only way you can understand the emotional ride that this anime is showing. Episode 4 still makes me shed a tear, and the ending was just simply perfect.

KGNE was one of the most unique anime I've ever seen, and yes people keep comparing it to Maison Ikkoku with it's one guy and two girl set up, but KGNE was a short, concise, and emotional drama. Maison Ikkoku was too long and drawn out. Sure, KGNE had too many side characters, but it's focus on Haruka, Mitsuki and the dweeb Takayuki developed the characters wonderfully. I even shed a tear and two at the most intense scenes in episode 2 and the final episode. The ending was great, none of this pseudo happy happy ending. Everyone moves on in life.

I think Haruka's picture book basically summarized the content of the story, and made for some deep ramblings. Too bad I don't have a hard copy of the book.

To all the viewers out there: this is NOT a shoujo anime. No matter what people keep describing this as a "chick flick", no it's not. It came from a hentai game for gods sake (hence the immense amount of girls). It's a wonderfully crafted story about a guy stuck between a promise made 3 years ago and his current livelihood.

9 (very good)

Final Verdict

Dude, only Akane pwns. And Haruka. Mitsuki can go die that beeyotch.

The biotchiness is exactly the point dude. It is mad love gone bad :P

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien is such a dramatic anime. At times it pisses me off lying to poor Haruka :( Akane is kick ass shes head strong. A good anime but it tends to make me not watch it sometimes. haha cause i don't want to see Haruka hurt. lol i guess its just me

This was a really nice anime. You are right Takayuki was a dweeb but Haruka was such a boring girl as well. I just can't see how anyone would choose such a girl with absolutely no personality. Still a great series with a lot of interesting moments and twists. The end which was fairly realistic is a rare thing in animes of this type.

wow hmmm maybe there's something wrong with me but I didn't enjoy the series at all. I thought animation was decent enough, sound prety mediocre, and characters.. ehhh so-so.. the characters were very plain and in my opinion most of them were not well developed.

As for the plot.. boy did i have a problem with the plot. I've seen so many reviews raving about it so I was expecting something original.... and it turns out that its one of the most uncomplicated, unoriginal, common plots i have ever seen. Some people pointed out that it was 'realistic'. This is baffling to me.. since when was good anime plot supposed to be realistic...

Hm... but I'm still trying to figure out why people love it so much..

This is a series that I came for Akane, but was drawn in by the Romantic Drama elements of the story between Takayuki, Haruka, and Mitsuki. A great series, that we probably won't see brought over here to the states.

Actually I'm shocked this series HAS NOT yet been brought over to the states. We've seen some pretty similar (and less popular!) series liscensed. Like Boys Be, Diamond Dust Drops, Koi Kaze (a real shocker!) etc.. Unless there is some weird liscensing difficulty (like there was with Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne) I'm quite positive KimiNozo will make it here eventually. What I *really* want to see is the game.. the storyline is even more intense in the game. I don't care if there is porno, I want to see Haruka given a happy ending. ^__^

Anyway, nice review Maceart. Good attention to details. Only one little nitpick- the series is 14 episodes, not 13.

that is best anime of the world

i may be baised when i say this but, kimi no nozomu eien is by a very very huge far, the best romance/drama anime out there. i agree that i hate seeing an innocent haruka being lied to. its all cos bakayuki cant make up his mind ;P note bakayuki!! alrite j.k

actually i prefer haruka over the rest o.0. shes sweet and luvly in a sense

on a simple note. the hoshizora no waltz really was a great piece of music to me. anyone found that nice as well. it's still one of the best for me

Sadly, Americans only want violence and sex, not triangle relationships with a coma involved.

EXACTLY!! I couldn't have said it better myself.. I went to forums, read all the reviews, everyone kept saying KGNE was the most emotional anime ever.. but all I saw in the anime was bitching, bitching and more bitching..However, I DID enjoy the twsit in episode 3. and the ED theme. and yea..Akana pwns all!

No offence intended ^^

HAhahaha the anime is nice but when the Haruka go to the hospital and the boy starts to go to it's getting a little bit borung , but the end was nice

I cried.
