Rozen Maiden

Rozen Maiden tv Review

Jun Sakurada is not an average boy of his age. Due to some event of the past, Jun has spent most of his recent life in his room, unable to properly socialise. One day, he comes across a doll. This doll, however, is no ordinary doll. It's the 5th Rozen Maiden Doll Shinku, and it comes into life when Jun gives it a couple of winds.

Shinku 'enslaves' Jun into becoming her "medium". Jun and Shinku soon come across Suigintou, another Rozen Maiden Doll who is determined to defeat Shinku in the "Alice Game" to become the ultimate "Alice". Shinku must fight through the obstacles coming against her and help Jun break out of his unstable life.

Story & Characters

Definitely something new to the table. Instead of a guy pimping with a lot of girls, this time the girls are turned into pedolicious dolls AND the guy is being the slave to the dolls. Fabulously awesome. The tension with Sugintou, the drama and trauma Jun goes through, the Alice game, everything fit very nicely to a 12 episode anime.
Characters were the strongest point in the Rozen Maiden. Everyone was so memorable. Shinku was the best with her assertive and S-M like attitude. Maybe I just have a fetish with pedolicious assertive S-M dolls, or maybe I don`t. Jun turned better and better, a very dynamic character, from an ass to a hero. His transformation is a very touching thing to see. Sakurada Nori provides the role as a ditzy sister who really cares for her brother. Hina Ichigo, though annoying, provided a nice comedic touch to the series. Souseiseki is an uppity beeyotch, and Souseiseki her twin sister is a foil of her. Sugintou is the bad villain with a mission, with the most annoying laugh in an anime. But it`s all good. There are many other characters which appear but only provide cryptic and bit-characterish roles.

Art

Um.. this area needs some work, but it gradually got better in the end. The fighting animations were very smooth, but character movements are rigid. The character designs are nice and consistent though, and the dolls are so cute! Their designs are very detailed down to their clothing and their hair and their eyes. I especially liked how they animated tea drinking, which was something not usually seen in anime. The backgrounds are very detailed and vivid also and they convey a very realistic feel. This area would be a 9, but the animation department could have bumped it up a bit. Opening and Ending animations were superb.

Sound

This area pawns. I know some people can`t stand opening songs in minor, I couldn`t stand it at first, but it gradually caught on to me. The OST is a wonderful blend of violin and piano pieces, and fits the dark gothic mood incredibly well. The seiyuus are very interesting and provide nice voices to the characters. Shinku`s voice was perfect, along with Jun`s sister Nori as the ditz. Jun`s voice could have been lower, but her voice could do dramatic scenes very well. I especially liked the sound effects of the dolls when they do their magic powers. Flawless.

Presentation

A surprising hit... the plot is something very new. And I liked the character designs. Highly recommended. Nothing beats a Sunday afternoon watching pedo dolls fight. Man that made my day. The very first episode got me hooked. The scene with Shinku slapping Jun was just perfect. The timing, the absurdity of the act, the voice-acting, Jun's face after the ordeal, just perfect. The fourth episode uses completely XD faces throughout, making a interesting filler indeed. Some of the bit characters were ingenius too, like Kun-kun. Why Shinku, Sui Sei Seki, and Hina Ichigo would watch a show with puppets, I do not know. What I do know is the dramatic irony of puppets watching puppets. Ingenious.

So what is this about? Well, it`s about this guy Jun with severe trauma in his life (don`t they all?) He meets this doll (called a Rozen) and becomes her servant. Then weird and wacky things start happening, and it`s a fun ride to the end. Brilliant.

This is worth your time. It has nice action, nice drama, nice tension, and a good bit of romance. Just something for everyone, even if you get irked by pedo dolls (well come on people, PEDO DOLLS RULE!)

You made my day with the "pedolicious S-M dolls" description. Nicely done.

That's actually the most actually characterization of Shinku I've come across. Very funny yet also so very much appropriate. Pedo doll, what can you so to that? XD

Wow. After watching the series myself I can only say that everything that needs to be said has been said in your review.
