Azumanga Daioh

Azumanga Daioh tv Review

Azumanga Daioh is a slice of life anime that follows six friends throughout their three years of high school. There is no overarching plot other than following the experiences of these six characters through high school; however, Azumanga Daioh still succeeds on its strong cast of characters and their interactions. The main characters are all female, and the friends - and their teachers - get into some very interesting and hilarious situations. They are: Tomo, the energetic one with no self control, Yomi, Tomo's... "friend" through all their school years, Chiyo, the 10 year old genius, Osaka, the airhead, Sakaki, the tall, athletic and shy one with a thing for cats, and Kagura, the athlete and self-proclaimed rival of Sakaki.

Story & Characters

Well, the story is much about nothing. It doesn't have a real plot besides showing everyday life (or lives) of the group. The story features 7 main characters which I'll introduce one by one. Chiyo-chan, the tensai (genius) who moved right from elementary school to highschool. Despite her intelligence, she is still a kawaii childish one who never completely loses her innocence. Tomo-chan, the active gal which is good-hearted but a little baka. She's talkative and friendly but has no hope at studying. Koyomi-chan, the girl with glasses whom Tomo-chan is best friends with since elementary school. She's the one with strong determination, especially when it comes to her weight (which no one dares say anything expect Tomo-chan the baka.) Kaguya Ayumu, or the so called "Osaka". An Osakan girl who moved to Tokyo and happened to be in this same school where she is called by her name for only half an episode (and being "Osaka" afterwards, thanks to Tomo-chan again ^^.) She's best known for her clumsyness and often seen sinking into her own world (in a funny way though, ^^') and talking to herself (also funny). Sakaki, the girl with the longest hair and tallest body. She seems to be quiet but inside is a anything-kawaii-lover. She is also a real fan of anything related to cats. Kagura-chan, the athlete girl. She has the most physical ability (inferior only to the quiet Sakaki.) Starting as a rival of Sakaki, she eventually blends into the group. And lastly, "Kaorin" or Kaori-chan, a somewhat huge fan of sakaki who only gets one year with the group. Though she has less part, but she is an unforgettable character. Apart from this is their teacher Yukari-sensei, Minamo-sensei and Kimura-sensei which has very outstanding personalities. Well, I won't spoil it more than this, the only thing I could say is that it's a great story and a must-see of an anime fan.

Art

The art of "Azumanga Diaoh" is a little above average. While it is not very beautifully created, it really catches the eye. The coloring is not very colourful, but is still above the average. The character design is great too, somewhat presenting their personalities out to our eyes by their looks. I think the anime is a little better then the manga version of the title. About the sound-effects are good by my judgement, they just happened to be in the right time in the right place. Some jokes does get more hilarous by the sound of the seiyuu (voice actress).

Sound

The music's great, the creators really know when to put which music into the scene. That also makes the OST album of Azumanga Daioh a great piece to listen to. The closing song "Rasberry heaven" is my favorite. Also, the character songs of Chiyo-chan and Sakaki-chan is great, "Sekai wa NEOHAPPY" and "Kokoro wa shoujo de parachute" repectively. And also, the instrumental songs used as background musics are cool. I think it you like the easy-listening-to kind of music, it's a reccommended one. Some information, there are 8 character CDs - Chiyo, Sakaki, Osaka, Tomo, Kagura, Yomi, Senseis and Kaorin. Also, there are the movie OSTs, the TV series OST1 and OST2 and the "Tribute to Azumanga daioh" and "Azumanga Daioh vocal album". Not sure it's 100% correct, but that's what I got from the internet though.

Presentation

Azumanga Daioh has its own originalinity in the way the jokes and puns are designed. Well, most of them are langauge-puns (Japanese, for sure.) So if you're seeing it, make sure you get it from a reliable fansub. Also, the things the charaters do are very hilarous, in a way that doesn't need words to describe, just SEE and LAUGH. It is very funny and when each episode is over, it just makes you want to see the next one immediately. It's a little too sad that there's only 26 episodes, I'm sure that there's much more jokes left in the closet to continue though. (Actually, the author of already-finished Auamange Daioh is currently working on a new series called "Yotsubato!" or "よ&!".) Anyway, contained in these 26 episodes is a package of the happy stories of the group. Note that there are no ecchi (or more correctly, almost no role of a male student) in this series, so you fans of the ecchi club are to be a little disappointed. However, without the ecchi element, it is still a great on to watch and smile at the jokes. Lastly, my last words are "if you haven't seen Azumanga Daioh then you've never been to the world of anime!"
