Story & Characters

In DearS an alien spaceship has crash landed in an Japanenese bay and out of all the DearS, aliens that look like humans, 150 of them have survived. Since Earth's technology was too low to repair the wrecked ship, they were stranded and were unable to get to their original destination. So a year later they have accepted to live among the people of Earth and make Earth's customs their own. Since all the DearS look like their in their late teen years, the government has decided to put them in a program where they would learn about Earth's customs and then live among the populous of Japan as high school students, one in each high school. Surprisingly they were able to learn Japanese when they first landed and are known to be great linguist. This and the fact about being alien is the reason that they are highly endorsed by the people of Earth, especially Japan. Of course everyone is interested in the DearS except Takeya Ikuhara who wants nothing to do with the aliens. But then one day he finds this girl in rags and takes her in his apartment. Totally clueless, he didn't know the girl, whom he named Ren, was a DearS until Neneko told him, the daughter of the landlord. Not only that but he didn't know either that Ren was now his slave to do tasks and biddings for him until she started calling him master. As the story goes on we find out more about the DearS and their real plans Earth.
It's a pretty good story and is not just all about babes, the girls even play an important role in the story. I'd give it about 7.

Art

The art is pretty decent like most anime does. I'm not exactly the best at reviewing art so if you have anything better to say go ahead and type it down, I might even update it. All I have to say about the art is that it's nicely presented and doesn't have much of the shortcut drawing where it looks so basic like it was done quickly. I don't know how many people would like to concentrate on drawing hair but I like the way Ren's hair is drawn, as for the outfit, never seen anything like it. Some of the drawing even looked like a clip from an anime series. The art is just about like any other and not so unique since there really isn't a lot of action going on like explosions and such. I'd give it a decent 6.

Sound

It's not like you'd hear any background music in a manga but according to the how the dialog was presented it was never overexagerrated and the way it was written wasn’t too extreme for the most part. There seemed to be parts where you would find the character screaming, in most cases Tekeya. The translation from Japanese to English didn't seem so bad, I didn't really notice for the most part. The only funny part about the translation was that the language teacher in the Japanese version whom I'll assume taught English, taught Spanish instead in the English version. I thought this was kind of creative but kinda noticable. I wouldn't imagine a Japanese trying to learn Spanish, not like any wouldn't though. Again, the transfer from Japanese to English was done fairly well and was done creatively. Give it an average 6.

Presentation

Now I know what people would first think when they read an issue of DearS, it's almost like Chobits . No, I wouldn't think the author meant to copy Chobits just to be popular or anything but it's like that with everything, they almost look and seem the same but they are different in many aspects. DearS is about an alien race that arrives on Earth and disperses among the populous while they try to learn the local customs. Chobits is about human-shaped computers that everyone seems to have and the relationship between them and humans. The two worlds are totally different as you can see. But yes, Chobits and DearS are similar in appearance, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't read it. Only the way it started is what seems to be the same to me. In Chobits, Hedeki finds Chi in heap of trash. In DearS, Takeya finds Ren sitting under a tree. They both take their delicate figures home and give them a giant shirt to wear. Then the girls cuddle their newly found boyfriends and sleep with them. That's the similarity but as the story goes on the two manga split. In DearS, Ren was supposed to be a secret until one day she decides to buy bread for Tekeya and gets lost on the way back. She arrives at Tekeya’s school and everyone starts noticing her. When Tekeya and Neneko are overhead talking about why Ren’s in school, everyone starts star-gazing at Ren and starts asking her questions. She was mistaken for another DearS who was sopposed to come the next day and was welcomed as the new student. Chi in Chobits didn’t attend Hedeki’s school, she went straight to work at a bakery store to help her boyfriend with his financial issues.
As the story goes on we see that Chi is in love with Hedeki. It’s not normal though for robots to fall in love with their owners, even though the owners often fall in love with their robots. And that’s all I have to say about the two mangas.
I’d like to give this spontaneous manga an 8.
