Plot Synopsis

Based off the shounen manga by Clamp, "Chobits" is set in the near future where persocoms (human-like computers) are common in the world. Cue in your average nice guy Motosuwa Hideki, 18 years old, a retester and a virgin at that~ He sets off to Tokyo to study at a prep school in order to get into college and on the way finds an abandoned persocom in the trash pile. Reasoning that he's reducing industrial waste, Hideki brings the the persocom back and switches her on.... At first it may seem like another boy meets mysterious girl kind of story, but Chobits goes much deeper that your average shounen story. The storyline explores some of the more mature aspects of an imminent future with machines replacing humans, of love, friendship, and what it really means to be "alive." Though even with it's mature themes, the overall look of Chobits is lighthearted at best. The comedy is very funny, though a bit ecchi at times it's done tastefully enough that anyone can enjoy it! All in all, Chobits plays out as a well written and thoroughly enjoyable love story.

Story & Characters

It's an awesome story about kid who's trying to get into college. Of course there are daily trials, homework, studying, getting a job, paying the rent, flirting with the land lord, meeting robot girls in back alleys and falling in love? Well, it's an awesome plot line, set in the not-so-distant future where persocoms(personal computers, generally shaped like humans with the exception of special ears which double as data ports) are entirely too common. In such a setting, who knows what complications can arise? Well, you'll run into most of them in this wonderfull series. It's really not too serious a series, and no, it's not full of bloodshed either. It's more of a humorous love story, with plenty of amusing distractions and complications, with a side of cuteness. The characters are horribly loveable, and it's very interesting to watch the relationships that develop, and the hardships they suffer. So if you like cute characters, random inappropriate situitations, love triangle complications, and a whole lot of funny, this is the series for you.

Art

The art, especially the manga, in this series is fantastic. It's one of my favorite styles. It ranges from beautifully detailed, to entirely too cute. The art in the anime is very clean, colorfull and pleasing to the eye, as any anime should be. The manga is more artistic, pretty, and colorfull. It's not as detailed as some work I've seen, but sometimes simplicity says a lot more. It's definitely a favorite in my book. If you enjoy beautifully adorable artwork, cute characters, and breath taking surroundings and backgrounds, you'll probably love the art in Chobits.

Sound

The music for this series is very good, and fits horribly well with the story line, and the individual moods of the characters. (There's a specific song for each character, on the CD.) The music is anything from horribly happy and energetic, to slow, sad and rather dark. The voices also match well with the characters in Chobits, and they fit the emotions and situitations perfectly. Especially Chi's voice, though sometimes inquisitive and confused, she can be horribly happy and amused, hyper even, and her voice actor plays out the part pefectly, giving you a real feel for all of the emotions, situitations and characters in the story.

Presentation

This probably isn't the most original anime, with it's robots becoming humans theme, but it's definitely got it's own details that set it apart. Though some might shrug it off assuming it's like all the others, this story is much different, and much more involved. It's not just about violence, suspicion, murder and the like, this is just a cute love story about a human and a robot. There's secrets and the like, about the robot, how special she is, how she acts human and what not, and of course there's always a few suggestive points. There are funny scenes, cute scenes, parts that will make you want to die from embarassment, and others that will make you giggle or even blush. You'll get your old fashioned romance, and of course the scenes where the main male character attempts to hide his hentai from everyone else in the story. With Chi's child like behavior, plenty of amusing situitations become possible very quickly, and the main male character realizes that all too late. Luckily he's got some friends around, fellow school mates, who always seem to be able to help him out. It's quite a trip, and a good one at that.
