Samurai Girl Real Bout High School tv Review

Story & Characters

Now this is a fun little story, and less serious than the Manga in my opinion. The story centers around he character of Ryoko, who is a 16 year old high school girl who also happens to be a master of Kendo, and is the school's toughest champion in what are known as "K-fights"

In fairly common Anime style, our Hero soon finds herself in possession of an amulet that transports her into a world where her fighting skills give her super human powers, and she must defeat evil monsters before returning to our world. Other people she knows (who are not always friends) soon get involved, and naturally there are romantic complications (such as guy she has a major crush on also being the love interest of a dirty-fighting rival)

The theme of high-school girl as hero in another world is so common in anime it almost makes for a sub-genra all by itself, so there's no orginality points there. And most of the sub-plots have been seen a fair amount before, as well. For all of this, it's not boring or nessicarily predicatable. The characters have their own unique personalities and motivations, and it's not all about seeing t, but they shoudl never be the point of the story.)

Overall, I'm going to give this story a 7. It's good, it's fun, the characters are interesting, and shows a lot of potential. But it's not unique or inspiring enough to rate a higher score. So watch it and enjoy it for a fun and sexy martial arts action anime, but don't expect to very much if what you want is a deep plotline. It's unfortunate the series gets cut short, or maybe it would have developed into something even better.

Art

This is a beautifully drawn anime where every character is unique in appearance, and character movement is smooth and beleiveable. The colors are bright and distinct (which has a draw back of making it more cartoonish than if they used more realistic colors, but is very helpful if you happen to see it on a smaller screen), and the artistry is capable of displaying subtle changes in emotions (though emotional changes are usually more dramatic than that).

My biggest criticism is going to be about the eyes. On most of the men, the eyes look right, but on the women the eyes tend to be to big . It's unbalanced, and it disrupts the flow of the anime when I keep thing 'jeeze, her eyes are so big'. While big eyes are often used to make it easier to convey emotions, I shouldn't notice the big eyes so blatantly, which means they over did it.

Despite my feelings abotu the oversized eyes, I'm going to give the art an 8 rating.

Sound

Well, i on't hav emuch to say about the sound. I didn't notice any bad sound effects or voices, but nothing made me think 'wow, I love this music' or anything, so I will simply leave it at a 6.

And it seems that I must put more effort into the sound review. Hmmm. Well, the sound effects and speech were all well timed, and there wasn't any cheapness to the sound (cheap sword-clashes tend to be very noticibly weak/hollow sounding.

The music was forgettable, I know because I have. it left absolutly no impression on me at all, which means that it was neither good nro bad, it simply was. But then, there are very few Animes or Games where I really pay atention to the music.

Presentation

Originality was covered in part by my review of the storyline, but it shoudl also be mentioned here: While the individual aspects of the plot seem to be very common themes in anime, the way in which there elements are put together and made into a single flowing story , so it's not a knock off of another series, it is it's own identity.

One thing I am glad to notice is minimal use of super deformed mode. While I don't dislike super deformed completly, I find that it used all to often when it isn't even needed for the bit of humor , which dulls it's effectiveness when it should be used. And while there is a lot of comedy involved, the comedy generally isn't placed in such a way as to hurt the flow of the story. The humor wasn't absolute brilliance,t ehre were a few moments that earns a shrug from me, but the over all quality was solid.

Really, this is a very fun and enjoyable series to watch (as well as read) though as a fair warning, the storys depart greatly between the Anime & the manga. Nothing R-rated ever happens, but enough skin & torn clothes are shown to make teh fans happy with the service they are given with out making it unwatchable for parents with young children present.

I'm going to give this a 7, for over all noticably high quality with out being anything that over-awes the viewer.
