Final Fantasy X tv Review

Spira, once a peaceful land, has been under a threat from the existence of Sin for a 1000 years now. Their only hope is the Summoners. Only they are able to defeat Sin and bring the "Calm" if they complete their pilgrimage.

In Besaid Island, a 17-year-old newly made Summoner, Yuna, meets Tidus - a boy who claims to have come from Zanarkand. However, as unbelievable as it might seem, Zanarkand, is no more than ruins and rubble from war that took place 1000 years before. Together with Tidus and her guardians Lulu, Wakka and Kimahri, Yuna sets upon a pilgrimage as a Summoner in order to bring peace back to Spira.

Story & Characters

Final Fantasy X is the story of a young man (Tidus) who was a star blitzball player in his home city of Zanarkand, who's world is changed (literally) when a giant menace called Sin attacks and sends him to Spira - a different world from the one he knows. He learns that there Zanarkand was destroyed in a war over 1000 years ago and lies in ruins, and he also hears rumours of a man called Jecht, his father who disappeared 10 years ago.
In this world Sin (similar to Lavos), a global terror that has killed millions since that war, and has the scattered people living in constant fear. The people's only hope is the summoners that kill Sin and bring 'the calm' - the few years after Sin dies, until he reappears but there is always hope that he will not return. In order to kill Sin, summoners go on a pilgrimage to the temples of Yevon to receive Aeons from spirits called Faith.
To try and find a way home Tidus joins Yuna, a young summoner at the start of her pilgrimage along with her other 'guardians', and the game follows this journey. As you journey throughout the game you discover more behind what Sin actually is, how and why Tidus has been brought to Spira and also the truth behind the temples of Yevon and the Yevon hierarchy. The storyline to this game is compelling - the plot is rich and beautiful.

Art

The graphics in this game are simply amazing. When I first played FFX I could not believe how smooth and beautiful the game was, given FF8 and FF9's graphics. The battles are incredible particularly those underwater. The graphics in FFX are comparable to top fighting games such as DOA3 or Tekken4. The characters (and enemies) move realistically and sometimes, close up, you might think they were real.
The character models are so good that even most of the cutscenes simply use them rather than full video. It is a little weird though when they switch from this to full video, the characters normally look western but in the videos they definitely look Asian, I'd say Japanese. I notice they changed this in FFX-2, but not to much success.
Travelling around the FFX world you will see some really beautiful landscapes particularly the stunning Macalania forest, and of all types like the open Calm Land planes, the cold mount Gagazet or the raging deserts of Bikanel island.

Sound

Nobuo Uematsu shows real talent in the game’s OST, I personally think this is probably the best FF OST done so far, maybe with FF6 as the other contender for this spot. There are a few themes in this game the two main ones being 'Suteki da ne' and the 'Song of Prayer', these two are laced throughout many of the tracks and tie them together well. The normal battle theme is good and there are several other really standout battle themes used including boss themes. I personally find if a game’s OST isn't good I will not enjoy the game, but a great OST will greatly enhance it - this OST certainly does.
Given the English version of the game the voice acting is quite decent. Yuna, Rikku and Tidus' voices are good. Wakka's voice is great. Auron voice is great. Kimahri and Lulu's voices are a bit stiff. I hope to play the Japanese version of the game someday to see what the voice actors were like. It's weird in the FMVs seeing them speak in English. The sound effects in FFX are quite good.

Presentation

This is a game you do not want to stop playing. The plot is compelling with plenty of comedy, action and romance. The battle system is like in most Final Fantasy's, a new innovation. In this game there is no battle gauge instead a list of who acts next is used and changes according to certain actions taken (eg. using haste moves a character up the list and gives them more turns more often). The levelling up system is not new but different in that you level up a particular stat, but you do so by moving each character around a large grid, with each character starting in their own area of the grid (eg. Firaga in Lulu's Black Mage area of the grid). I would advise anyone to make Kimahri follow a fighter path, he can be either Mage or Fighter but I found he was a fairly useless mage. Weapons do not simply increase stats; but rather equip certain resistance or auto abilities like auto-haste or no encounters - this is good because you are never saving up money to buy weapons or armour in this game.
This was the first RPG with voice actors (to my knowledge) and this was pulled off effectively, it made the game seem to come alive and play like a movie. The game will take the about the average 50 hours to complete but can take ages if you plan to complete all the sidequests - particularly defeating the Dark Aeons put in the game after the Japanese release. This game has lots of replay value.
You are never getting lost in this game unlike in other RPGs where this is really tedious. You have an overhead map with an arrow that points to where you need to go. There is no plodding around a world map either. The interactions between your characters in battle owing to their unique personalities are a nice touch to the game. Monsters come in all variety and difficulties. A slight annoyance to some may be the solving of puzzles in the temples but it's an RPG; there should be at least a few puzzles to solve.
Some people have commented that their only problem with this game is that the final boss is too easy, but I believe this depends on how much training you do. I lost to him originally but my brother beat him in about 3 minutes, so go figure. The Dark Aeons in the international version are almost impossible relative to the final boss but this is if you really want a challenge.
In short this game is awesome. Graphics, plot, gameplay, OST, battle system, replay value - all score highly. If you are considering buying the game or even a PS2, FFX is worth it.

I liked everything in Final Fantasy 10. But I think that after Final Fantasy 8, the story with the FF Games have been getting a little shaky.

I disagree. FF8 wasn't my style, and I never played 9. FF X was as close to perfection as any game can be, as far as I can see. The soundtrack is amazing.

To the reviewer: I think the reason LuLu and Kimarhi's voices are so stiff is because they are supposed to be the more mature, experienced characters.
