Story & Characters

The story seems to be mainly about Daisuke, and his troubles with turning into a different person, Dark, on his birthday. Apparently, Daisuke/Dark is supposed to steal artwork which turn "evil" and give them to his grandfather and mother for purification. Along the way they meet Krad, the "bad guy" of the show, who is like Dark, and his host is Satoshi, Daisuke's school friend that is more than he seems.

My opinion on the anime was that it was fairly shallow. Not enough character development, especially on Krad, and Dark and Krad seem to get into random fights every few episodes. I understand that they are supposed to hate each other, but the reasons for that are not given until the end of the anime, which causes people to be confused.

The story is not all bad, however. There are parts of Daisuke which are quite touching, and the story does flow. It is almost episodal, with new sub-villians and things to steal almost every episode. Good for people who prefer episodal animes.

The anime also ends very adruptly, with very little explaination.

Art

The character models are well done, and the animation for the wings (Krad and Dark) was really cool. Overall, the animation was good, and the art was excellent. The expressions were shown clearly and one could almost feel the anguish or happiness that the character was feeling. The background is also pretty good, especially the last few scenes in the show.

The costume design was okay. Mio's clothes were well designed though. They were original and reflected her happy-flirty personality well. She even gets a costume change, which also looks pretty on her. Krad also comes across as a very haughty person. His clothes were also good, but I liked the animation when he was torturning Dark. The expression on his face was really realistic. You could see how he was enjoying it.

Sound

The voice acting for this anime was quite remarkable. All the characters sounded extremely convincing and while I may not like Daisuke's seiyuu, I have to admit that it fit the character well. Dark's seiyuu was really good, it showed his personality. Also, Risa, who is supposed to like Dark to an almost fanatical extent until it turned annoying, had a good voice actor that brought out her feelings really well.

The music tends to repeat at the beginning of the first few episodes, which can be irritating, but around the middle-end it becomes more varied. There are also various (short) songs(sung) scattered throughout the anime, which helps to bring out the essence of a particular scene.

Presentation

The interaction between the characters - especially Dark and Daisuke - should be the main focus of this anime. The story is confused, but the character development is fairly good, with most of the sub-characters being more than colored figures in the background.

Being a girl, I enjoyed watching the Dark and Krad scenes the most. In my opinion, they were the coolest characters in the anime. Daisuke and Satoshi also had a strong friendship, despite their rivalry, and this is shown especially in the last episode.

The music and voice acting was one of the highlights for this anime. The voice actors really did their job well. (This is referring to the japanese voice acting) The music also emphasized the feeling of each scene, and was quite nice.

The ending was a little rushed though. It was pretty slow durning the first few episodes, then it suddenly ended. There was very little development on the final villian and also, what his objective for doing what he did was. Also, the very destruction of the existence that threatened them was questionable. This anime brings alot of unanswered questions to the mind.

Your review is great, though I have to disagree with one of the points made regarding the story. The certain ambiguity surrounding the reason behind Krad and Dark's hatred of each other, I think, is a good point. It keeps watchers watching and guessing. If you find out everything there is to know in the beginning it's rather boring.

I haven't seen the entire anime (up to episode 12) and I've read up to volume six of the manga. I'm not entirely certain of this, but I've heard from several that the author has gone on two breaks from the manga and thus it's been hard to keep it up with the anime. A lot of the episodes aren't written in the manga and serve more as 'filler' episodes (makes it more episodal as you said) but the manga is much different.

In any case, the storyline is poorly reflected in the anime and the manga serves as a much better outlet for any fanbase, in my opinion. :P

Great review though -- you showed the good points and the bad. ^.^

Great review. I thought the story was confusing too later in the series. I thought the artwork was great. I think the artwork deserves something better than a 6.
