Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon tv Review

Usagi Tsukino is a young girl who loves to eat and sleep, and hates school. Her life completely changes one day, when she rescues a cat from some bullies; the cat later gives Usagi a brooch that allows her to transform into Sailor Moon and fight off the awakened forces of evil. Although clumsy at first, Usagi gradually learns to fight and meets valuable allies, as well as formidable foes, all while learning about her mission and mysterious past, which spans millennia of battle and romance.
The story is a sequel to Codename: Sailor V, which focuses on Minako Aino's time as Sailor V before the events of BSSM.

Story & Characters

This story revolves around Usagi, a highschooler who is the reincarnation of the Moon Princess from the Ancient Moon Kingdom.. However , in this life, she does not know that she has superpowers and a predetermined destiny until one day, an interesting feline named Luna walks into her life. Luna slowly helps Usagi realize and understand that she has a destiny and a mission. These consist of several flashbacks which are quite interesting, and are a general high point in the story. As Usagi learns about her past and starts honing her skills, she transforms from a crybaby coward to a strong and couragous fighter for justice. This process is generally hilarious with Sailor Moon cying in certain situations and just generally being a doof. Along her journey she meets several daemons, evil creatures, who are made solely to extract some sort of energy from common humans. Again, this set of episodes in the seasons were rather repetitive. Usagi must transform into Sailor Moon, Defender of Love and Justice, and make sure to foil all the daemons plans over and over and over. -_-;. While doing this she discovers that she is not alone, and is joined by Sailor Venus, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, and Sailor Mercury. Together they form the inner sensi or Inner Solar Soldiers. In one of the later seasons,, she meets up with the outer sailor scouts, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and Saturn. She also learns that the mysterious man in the tuxedo, Tuxedo Mask is indeed one of her good friends. She also finds out that he was her soon to be husband back on the moon kingdom. Again, they fall in love and are dating in this current life. This part is kind of cheesy but if you're a romance/destiny fan this is okay. They later discover Chibi Usa who is their future daugter who appears with the help of Sailor Pluto. Usagi and Chibi Usa have terrible fights since at this time they are similar in maturity although Usagi appears to be at least 10 years older. In the final season she discovers there are more senshi all over the universe, specific ones for each solar system and she meets Sailors Star Fighter, Star Healer and Star Maker. The final season was definetly the best one , with the storyline departing from the usual repeats of main enemies and minions. The beginning and end of each seaons held most of my interest. The plotline was very bland in the middle of each season. Save for Season 5, all the other four seasons are only ok, nothing fantastic.

I give it a six for a storyline that isnt super gripping but is nice to watch when there is little else to do.

Art

The only good graphic part of this series are the transformation clips where the girls transform into the soldiers. Mostly eveything else is of normal quality. The color use is left to almost watercolor like ligtness and its mostly cel-shading. Generally good on the eyes. You dont leave the television feeling tired. The backgrounds are quite simple and rarely dynamic. Static backgrounds were quite common during the time the show ran but now its almost boring to consider the art aspects of this series. I believe it was almost completely hand drawn, in which one expects not anything great. The lines are simple and clean, as is the coloring.

Rating: 7

Sound

The music is not very good, All the girls voices are high pitched. That gets annoying after a while. Definetly something that doesnt belong on a CD. The background music is absent quite a lot where you would expect it. And when it is there its not fantastic orchestra music.

Rating: 3

Presentation

The series is well organized. Sometimes too well organized, leading to monotony. The Series is not the most original series out there. Same ol same ol beat the bad guys up story line. This is something Id reccomend for children ages 8 -12 as it has no real complex or gripping scenes. Each show is only about 25 minutes long so the entire series can be seen in about a week. Small humorous situations may leave you witha chuckle but nothing more. It might have young children in fits but the humor is almost entirely comprised of Usagi doing dumb things. You can watch this series probably only once as watching it a second time leaves you with no surprises or anything you might have missed,. Simple series back when anime was just getting cool in America. Its a fun oldie to watch.

I guess its my taste that matters. I thought the last season was good but the other four were very repetitive with almost the same thing happening in every episode. Im a fan of more dynamic anime. Plus, the guidlines said give it around a six unless you found it absolutely amazing, and quite frankly. I didnt. Ive seen every episode of every season. And I personally didnt think it deserved above a six. But please, you are certainly welcome to make your own review. :) Im sure it will give people a more dynamic view of the opinions on the series.

i must say i prefer the manga to the anime. the anime....well, the voices are way too high-pitched *cringes*

    don't really like it

My favorite season was the last one (never aired in US) Sailor Stars. I have to admit, watching it in Japanese was SO much better than the english dub, it doesn't even compare. No more screeching. If you have the SM DVD's do japanese with english subtitles, much better. However, I have to admit I actually did like the eng dub CD that came out at the time, haven't listened to it in awhile...hmmm....my favorite songs were "My Only Love" and "Oh Starry Night."

Quote by royaldarknessi must say i prefer the manga to the anime.

I definately agree the characters were much more alive to me in the manga and the stories are often very different from the anime. I really think anyone interested in the series should read the manga, then see the anime.

I used to really love this series, it is one you can love and then grow into loving anime when you see all the other great things out there. So, it is a good starter anime.

Sorry to say, but really bad review. But I guess that's cause you didn't like the anime. Sailor Moon is famous for it's great music, uniqe and gripping story and it's deep character development. Too bad you can't see that. :/

Although not a favorite of mine, I do think that you really misinterpreted one of the most regal anime in history.

I was quite a fan of this series when I was younger. I liked the drawing style very much, both that one from the anime and the one from mangaka Naoko Takeuchi. The only thing that annoyed me sometime was the "monster of the day". It got too predictable from time to time... but in general I'd say that Sailor Moon definitely is one of the best magical girl series ever.
I like it a lot, even today.

I think this is a bit harsh. Sailor Moon is a classic. Your review is along the lines of saying something like, "The Sound of Music" sucks......it may not be to your tastes but it's a true classic. Sailor Moon shouldn't get this low.

I agree entirely with your review. I myself was introduced to anime by watching Sailor Moon in kindergarten, and I thought it was something amazing and never-before-seen. But now that I've seen several anime series, my opinion has changed radically.

The voices of the characters were annoying most of the times, and only the OP theme saves something from the already not so vast soundtrack, in my opinion. The lack of background music is also a downfall.

Yes, it got very repetitive with the monster-of-the-day cliche. Not much to comment on about this series, I would lower the age limit to even 6 -kids can understand pretty well what's going on, and there are rarely any tense or dramatic moments.

It still remains a classic, a representative icon for the shoujo genre, despite the cliches and losses. Good review, you captured the essential points and the rating is appropriate.

In terms of the sound, I don't believe you examined much the voices of every character. Not just the protagonists, but also the antagonists. I think they did a superb job with their roles. When making a review, you want to give a solid reasoning behind it. If you're going to give one area a low score like a 3, you'd better be ready to defend it.
