Scrapped Princess

Scrapped Princess tv Review

There is a bad prophecy told to the king that a baby will be born in his kingdom. The baby is said to bring chaos and destruction into the world, and the cursed baby is Pacifica Casull, the newborn princess that will bring the curse at the age of 16.

To escape the prophecy, the baby was buried in the darkness right after birth, and no one is suppose to talk about this omen. However, one assasins after another is coming to kill Pacifica, who is not suppose to exist in the first place, and so the elder brother and sister of Pacifica: Shannon and Raquel, sets on a journey to protect their only sister.

Story & Characters

Ever since she was a small child, Princess Pacifica Casul (Kasull) has spent her life fleeing from those who would kill her, and hated by those who know her name. Protected by her foster older brother and sister, Shannon and Raquel as her Guardians, Pacifica is prophesized to destroy the world at the age of 16. As a result, she is abondoned to die at birth, but survives and becomes known as the "Scrapped Princess". Rapidly approaching 16, Pacifica, her brother and sister fend off those who would destroy her, and at the same time, she ponders her own existence.

One of the few anime that moved me to tears, this anime I will cherish for the rest of my days. The plot is sort of a mix between genres, varying mostly between action and comedy, with a very nice twist of drama. You'll laugh at the antics of Leo, who attempts to win Pacifica's heart, you'll cheer Shannon on as he fights off the Peacemakers (those who would destroy Pacifica for the better of the world.), and you'll be moved as you listen to Pacifica reflect on her reasons for living. Is she better off staying alive? Or will she just end her own life for the sake of the world?

It's hard for me to truthfully mention the negative aspects of Scrapped Princess, because I'm so in love with it. The pace moves fairly consistently, and the episodes don't break off for any "filler" episodes. The ending concludes well and ties up the loose ends, although personally, I would have liked to hear more information about all the characters, and the future. But alas, you'll have to see it for yourself. :)

There are no real "bad guys" to speak of in this anime, which was quite surprising to me. In time, you'll understand the reasons behind those who would do Pacifica harm, but you'll have to watch to find out. Also of significant note, the story seems to take place in a sort of Middle Ages era, but about halfway into the anime, there are remnants of an earlier existing civilization that use highly advancced technology. Definitely a nice surprise there..

A story that will hold your attention, I kid nobody when I say it's one of my favorite anime series. I highly recommend it.

Art

In general, the art seemed pretty well done. As the anime was produced by BONES, the colors are bright and rich, and there's no "broken" movement for the characters. The backgrounds vary in the medieval type setting, from forests to towns to caves, so there's nothing new to expect really. The real surprise comes in with the Peacemakers, as they aren't what I expected them to be, and they're animated very nicely in my humble opinion. Battle effects, from sparks to magical effects are also done well.

The Peacemaker designs and Shannon's "battle mode" (I'm trying to reveal as little as possible. :)) are probably the most unique aspect, but everything else looks well done. Nothing to really write home about, but what BONES does in Scrapped Princess, they do a good job.

If you'd like, do a Google search on Scrapped Princess and check out the images, although the images do not do the animation justice. :)

Sound

Plenty of ambience in this anime. Noises you'd expect to hear in the outdoors, to the clear noise of metal clanging as sword fights occur, the the rumble and boom of magic all occur clearly.

The seiyuu actors and actresses are definitely a plus in this category. From portraying Raquel's humble attitude, to Pacifica questioning her life, you can definitely feel and believe that their emotions are real and true.

My only gripe is that sometimes, the music doesn't really match the mood of a scene, and the songs are hardly memorable. Although there's nothing that will grate on your nerves, there's no music that will make a lasting impression upon you either. Average at best, in my opinion.

Presentation

The characters are the one of the most memorable aspects of Scrapped Princess. Every major character at least, has a significant role and is introduced in varying fashions, and has a unique attitude that distinguishes one character to another. Pacifica for example is probably (and obviously) one of the most powerful characters, as she tries to make light of her situation at times, and at other times, she seems sullen and down. Shannon and Raquel heedlessly throw their lives on the line to protect their little sister. These are but a few examples of how the characters make Scrapped Princess so memorable. You can relate and feel what each of the characters feel, and this in turn, just makes you want to watch the next episode just to see what happens next. :)

Scrapped Princess has a mix of everything for everyone, and as I mentioned earlier, it has a range of genres from comedy to action. No genre is stressed too much or too little, and this I believe, is what also makes Scrapped Princess so enjoyable...you don't tire of it.

With all this being said, I hope you, the reader, realize that this is a personal review, and I'm slightly biased so I like to give good reviews for this anime, but I tried to be as impartial as possible. All in all, I hope you give Scrapped Princess a chance and enjoy it. :) I most certainly did.

Hmm... I don't completely agree. It definitely was a mix of all genres, and it was really good... up until the end. I was a little disappointed with the ending and how it turned out. And it did get really weird in the middle. But overall, the characters were great, the art wasn't bad. It was an interesting series to say the least.

Aw, You can't tell that it's remnants of an ancient civilisation, it ruins the surprise it brings :\

Anyway, it was a fairly good review, you revealed way to much though...
