Rozen Maiden

Rozen Maiden tv Review

Jun Sakurada is not an average boy of his age. Due to some event of the past, Jun has spent most of his recent life in his room, unable to properly socialise. One day, he comes across a doll. This doll, however, is no ordinary doll. It's the 5th Rozen Maiden Doll Shinku, and it comes into life when Jun gives it a couple of winds.

Shinku 'enslaves' Jun into becoming her "medium". Jun and Shinku soon come across Suigintou, another Rozen Maiden Doll who is determined to defeat Shinku in the "Alice Game" to become the ultimate "Alice". Shinku must fight through the obstacles coming against her and help Jun break out of his unstable life.

Story & Characters

Just finished this series. I must say, what really appeals to me about this story is it's development of an underlying sweetness that other animes that I've seen haven't come close to. Dolls are disturbing to me, in general, but I'm glad I gave this series a chance because there is some interesting character development towards the end, not to mention moments of sheer cuteness esp. in regards to Shinku's reaction to kun-kun ^_^

While the story is somewhat typical of a 12-ep anime series and it's nothing that hasn't been done before, the characters and theme are, at least, unique and super-cute... did I mention this series is really cute?

I absolutely fell in love with the characters by the end. I felt that the development of the main characters was in some ways expected, and in some ways (i.e. Shinku's vivid display of emotion towards the last few eps) was quite intense and moving to me... I was moved by animated dolls... now that's saying something ^_^

The story moves along at a pretty good pace, with introduction of the arch-nemesis-type character early on. Throughout the series, I never really felt that my time was being wasted with filler material (though there were moments that came close, occasionally).

Art

This series is nicely animated with lots of color and darling character design. Again, nothing unusual, or even original, but extremely well-done. I never felt like they reused any cells to skimp on work, so that's really nice. You can tell the artists put a lot of work into the series - there are no shortcuts evident AT ALL as you watch it, which is a definate PLUS!!

My favorite aspect of the art in this series has to be the dolls' costumes. Each is unique and beautiful in its own right without being to gaudy (perhaps because some gaudiness is expected for characters that are living dolls - but none of this gaudiness spills over to the real human characters).

Sound

Well, the sounds were good... voices were appropriate to the characters, I thought. Great OP theme. All in all, sufficient, even really good, but nothing ultra-spectacular.

Seiyuu for the main characters was well-cast, in my opinion. Shinku had a reasonable amount of haughtiness that really filled-out her character. The only thing that bothered me about the voice-casting was that the seiyuu for Sougin Tou (bad guy, erm... girl) has a really annoying "HRM HRM HRM" laugh that gets on my nerves only because she uses it too much.

Presentation

This series was quite enjoyable, never dull, and definately re-watchable, which I can't say for much of the anime that I watch. I'd love to see more... and an anime leaving you wanting more must mean that it's good! The characters really grow on you, and though only a few of them really have significant (and perhaps somewhat predictable) development, it's more than enough to support the series.

Besides the main story line, the interplay of the character's together was really entertaining. Comedic moments were numerous and cute as hell. The dolls' fascination with a puppet TV show, Kun-kun about a detective dog is charming as ever.

As far as pacing is concerned, I felt the series was perfect. No gratuitous filler episodes with the plot emerging at the end or any nonsense like that. I guess it's pretty natural for a 12-ep series to move along at a good pace, but it didn't feel rushed at all. You never find yourself saying "wait, what?? did I miss something here?"

Again, even though this is nothing terrifically stunning, it's a solid, high-quality series that didn't bore me for a second, and is definately worth picking up.

Wow, this sounds like a good anime. If I ever see it in stores I'll be sure to buy it! <3
The scans in the galleries look awesome already, so that must say something about the series itself.

Good job on the review, needs some work, but over all not bad.
