Maria-sama ga Miteru tv Review

Story & Characters

In Maria-sama ga Miteru we are introduced to Yumi Fukuzawa a first year student of the Lillian school, a private catholic school that seems to be inhabited by the best, brightest and richest of Japan. The school has a governing body that work sort of like the old communist regions with the head of the party is more powerful then the head of the country as it where. The school has a group know as the Roses and they intern make up the three student council that act as the head of the student body. The school also has a system know as soeur which is French for sister. This is how the successors to the roses are chosen. I an odd twist of fate Sachiko Ogasawara one of the roses who does not have a soeur is forced to take Yumi as her soeur. Once Yumi becomes Sachiko soeurs the story progresses to the relationships between the rest of the girl in the series. There is a good deal of lesbian undertone and the series seem to revolve around emotional and other such interactions between the all female cast. Even though it does not come right out and say it, the series seems to imply that all of its characters have some sort of same sex interaction. The series itself is a little slow in the sense that you are in Victorian times and must act proper all times, this is of course is in contrast to Yumi who seems to add a special spice to the mixture. The story for the most part is told from Yumi perspective and is her trying to get adjusted to her new lifestyle no pun intended. Over all the story was very interesting and was quite enjoyable even though it was predictable.

Art

The art in this Maria-sama ga Miteru is I think the most shocking part of the entire series. Even though the show does not have that much action of exceptional beautiful designs, the art does what it is suppose to and then some. The character design, backgrounds, and layouts really help to immures you in the story. The artwork itself is a nice change of pace from most of the anime I have seen of late. The artwork seems to emphasize the prim and proper feel that the series seems to want to project. I also enjoyed the lack of cartoonish penciling that is for the most part absent from the series such as tear drop on the head to express emotion and abnormally fake violence to express distaste. The art really give you a sense that the show wishes to be taken seriously and that at least helped me to enjoy the show.

Sound

I really didn’t like the sound of the series. That may just be based on taste but it never really help me enjoy the show any more or less then if it had had no soundtrack. There is nothing remarkable about either the opening or ending themes and the background music seemed repetitive and lacked the emotional punch that one would expect form a good soundtrack. The only thing that can be said about it is that it stayed true to the idea that the show withed to be proper and for lack of a better word respectable. That is not to say that I am not a fan of the Ave Maria but it just never felt right to me. The voice acting in the show was nothing that would make you move but it was good none the less I think it just didn’t do the shows story justice.

Presentation

The presentation of the show was I think well rounded and very well done. From beginning to end you could feel that the show took you on a ride and did a good job of entertaining you on the way. The show is a very entertaining and even though it is slow at time and can often become annoyingly slow it still manages to keep you entertain and glued to your seat. Of the few time I did laugh in the show it was mostly during a scene that Yumi was in playing the fish out of water role. For the most part the show does not rely on comic relief to help it, it instead allow the character development and interaction to be the focus of the plot and show. The show may seem to be a bit of a soap opera but to me it isn’t. Another aspect of the show I enjoyed as that it never really skipped around it stayed in similar stops from episode to episode, that and it did an excellent job of introducing and reviling the characters for who and what they were. The show never really seemed to become tedious because it was continuously moving from one relationship to the next explaining the circumstance behind it and the emotional tension that existed also I did enjoy the fact the there was no good guy and no bad guy they were all just people trying to live there lives. As I have said already I enjoyed watching the show and even though I don’t think I would re-watch it I will watch the second season to see what will happen to the girls of the Lillian academy.
