Ai Yori Aoshi

Ai Yori Aoshi tv Review

The anime adaptation of Fumizuki Kou's manga features Kaoru Hanabishi, a normal every day college student. For years, he lived independently and alone. One day, his entire life gets turned upside down. He meets a young woman about his age one day at the train station. She appears lost and is searching for someone. In kindness, Kaoru lends a hand, without knowing that he was who she was searching for.

Aoi Sakuraba is the only daughter of a wealthy family. As such, her hand is well sought after. Unfortunately for her family, she already has her heart set on Kaoru, her betrothed. As a gesture of good faith, her parents allow them to live on the same property, with her acting as the landlady and her caretaker as the owner. Poor Kaoru has been reduced to playing the part of a tenant.

Of course, they don't know about all the other women who will be moving in with them...

How will Aoi and Kaoru explore their love with so many distractions? Will Aoi be able to cope with the number of love rivals?

Story & Characters

Well.. where to start. Many have said that this is a bland love hina. I agree, and disagree. Love Hina, though by no means is slapstick comedy, is more so than Ai Yori Aoshi (from now on AYA.. its tough to type T_T). By contrast, I think the creator had a different vision for this anime, as it tries to touch you on a deeper context. The story is by no means original, but it works. Protagonists that meet in childhood destined to be lovers in the future, with many complications that threaten to tear their love apart. Personally, Aoi kinda got on my nerves. Im not into the whole good wife who spends every waking minute figuring out new ways to please their hubbies. The plot details are entertaining and interesting to watch, but I kind of twitched every time is saw Aoi seemingly helpless/submissive. But, I have to admit that their love is charming and dare I say, inspiring. And the strength of their unity through adversity is nice to see. This factor is something you either love, or hate. I personally hate it more than I like, but I will score generously as I am sure that there are those that love this sort of stuff.

Art

The art on the other hand, I thought was impressive. But then again, nowadays what anime art isnt? Shaman King, Digimon, Pokemon, anything that ends in mon... well.. to be fair theyre geared towards children. AYA has some solid artwork with vibrant colors and and believable expressions. Though I was repulsed by Aoi's personality, the animation during those scenes is what kept my eyelids open. The backgrounds were very detailed and nice too, some anime's have some crappy backgrounds its kinda sad, but most animes, including AYA, had extensive background work and correct shading. Sometimes peoples body parts look unproportional, but if you're a guy I dont think you'd mind. (Though I think of this to be more of a girls anime, because of its very sappy story plot).

Sound

The music and OST was fairly good. Nothing memorable, but it was pretty good. And though I didnt like what she was saying sometimes, Aoi's voice was particularly cute. The other characters voices seems to fit the generic archetype for their roles (confused and logically challenged bookworm, snotty rich young girl, outgoing tomboy who likes to touch boobies, calm and collected boy who is liked by the girls). The voices seem to match, and are tolerable to listen to (im not saying who, but one of them is loud.. keke).. other than that the voices were pretty good. I havent heard any dubbed versions yet, so no comment on that.

Presentation

My personal opinion, nothing special. Though it has its moments, it was particularly funny watching Tina try to grab peoples fun bags (boobies, if you find that term offensive I slightly apologize), and the relationship between the girls is amusing also. However if you are looking for more humor this is not the show for you. Sometimes it was boring, and sometimes it was annoying, but hey, I bought it I might as well watch it (which was my driving motivation). Some things I didnt like, but others I did. I felt that the cons outweigh the pros, however my colleagues seem to think differently. It all depends on the thing I mentioned earlier. If you like me and dont like the weak submissive type girls, then dont watch this. Watch love hina or something, this is not for you. If you like them or dont mind, then go ahead and watch it. It will be a charming experience and Im sure you would have enjoyed it, no sarcasm. I try to be objective when reviewing things, and if Im going to be biased I usually warn readers ahead of time. However, considering that I probably would have liked it had I had been able to tolerate Aoi's personality, I recommend it to those who want to watch it. Its definately worth giving a chance. Also, my review kind of puts Aoi in bad perspective, I would like to retract these feelings without retracting my words, if that is at all possible. Aoi is a likable, or even lovable character given the opportunity.
