That's a good review. I have personally read and watched the series. Their pretty good, but sometimes, it lacks a little action.
Hikaru no Go tv Review
Shindou Hikaru is a lazy, under-achieving 6th grader until the day he finds an old goban in his grandfather's storage shed. The goban is haunted by the ghost of the greatest Go player of the Heian era, Fujiwara no Sai, who has spent a thousand years seeking the Hand of God; the Divine Move. Sai's soul attaches to Shindou's, so only Shindou can see or hear him, and Sai wants only one thing: to play Go.
Shindou has no interest in Go, but he takes Sai to a go salon to allow him to play. There Shindou and Sai meet Touya Akira, the same age as Shindou and a gifted Go player. Shindou is fascinated by both Touya's intensity and Sai's love of the game. Soon he develops his own desire to walk the path of Go and become a great player... and Touya's rival.Written by thefourthvine.Story & Characters
Hikaru no Go is about a Go playing ghost who died a tragic death and haunts a go board. This ghost, Sai, reveals himself (I thought Sai was a girl T_T) twice, once to a young boy who enjoys go, and second to another young boy who despises it (Hikaru). Once possessed (or attached, take your pick) to Hikaru, you go on a rollercoaster Go ride of Sai kicking much arse along the way. You laugh, you cry (because you find yourself actually enjoying Go). The story seems to go on forever, because there are many plot changes, but the overall premise always remains true. Sai is on his way to reaching the Hand of God, which I presume is to reach a godly level of expertise in Go, and eventually takes Hikaru as his disciple. I stumbled upon this manga (I didnt watch the anime until it was discontinued T_T) and was very suprised. I began playing Go afterwards, though I suck. Its that good that itll get you to want to be like Sai and Hikaru, though I prefer Sai. You dont meet any particularly memorable characters (other than Sai, or perhaps Hikaru), but you do get into some very fascinating story twists and vast... VAST character development.

Art
The artwork for the manga is superior. At first its not as good (though still very good artwork), and we see mangaka Obata Takeshi develop his goods into works of art. I think he is brilliant, and rank him up there with my favorites (though I am biased towards Kim Hyung Tae). Everything is very detailed, and well done. The Anime has some impressive work also, though I prefer the manga. Sai looks more like a guy in the anime, and I like to think of Sai as a girl, it just makes me happier inside.

Sound
Ok, this section will be a little biased. You know how when you read something you imagine everything that they dont give you? Well, I had a certain outlook on what kind of music would go along with this and that, and it was totally different from what i expected. The title song is very retro, reminds me of the old anime days such as slam dunk or mado king granzort. Things like that. I thought that they should have made it different. The song itself wasnt bad, actually kinda catchy, but I didnt feel like it went along with the theme of the anime. The voice acting was pretty good though, so that makes me feel a little more confident. I havent heard it dubbed, so I have no opinion there (though im not usually a fan of dubbing).

Presentation
Out of all mangas, I have some favorites, and Hikaru no Go ranks up there. If you question my tastes, my favorites (manga) are ranma 1/2, naruto, rurouni kenshin, I's, and love hina to a lesser extent. The anime is pretty darn good, but it does not rank as my favorites. However, regardless of my preference, aesthetically speaking, Hikaru no Go is pretty damn good. Its pretty original (though all the games played are actually pro games recreated), and very humurous. Its not that kind of slapstick humor like ranma is, but more like the half-serious half-goofy style that naruto seems to be. I find that the replay value of this anime/manga is very high, I find myself going back and reading my favorite battles (games) over and over. My only warning is this: dont get too attached if your an emotional person because it ends abruptly due to its cancellation. The anime and manga end differently (I think, its hard to get the last chapters of the manga, though I think I read it, or at least I was told it was the last chapter), where it seems that the manga suddenly gets cut off and the anime tries to make an ending in what seems to be a very anticlimatic fashion. BOO. I was going to give it a 10, but because it saddens me to think of its cancellation I am forced to give it a 9.
