Rurouni Kenshin

Rurouni Kenshin tv Review

Ten years after the beginning of the Meiji Era, a wandering samurai came to Tokyo. This man, known as Himura Kenshin later on, ends up living in a Kamiya Kasshin dojo and teach kendo for a living.

However, his life is not as simple, as turmoils arise from time to time, unfolding his true nature as the famous Hitokiri Battousai, the greatest killer of the Bakumatsu. However, vowing never to kill again, he tries as hard as he can not to draw his sword until the critical moment comes, and so far, manages to escape his bloody past.

Until the day when an old menace, in the form of Shishio Makoto, the successor to the Hitokiri Battousai, threatens the peace of the new Meiji Era. Shishio and his Juppon Gatana are ready to start a new revolution to correct the evils of Western influence, and forced Himura Kenshin, along with his new friends, once again raise his sword to protect their loved ones.

Story & Characters

This is about a wanderer named Kenshin Himura. He became a wanderer to escape his past. He is notoriously known as a manslayer who fought in the war. He is only identified by his amazing sword skills, red hair, and cross-shaped scar on his cheek. It is the Meiji Era, swords aren't permitted to be worn and the samurai are fading.( Kenshin wears his sword openly but replies that it's useless when it is commented on because it is a reverse blade sword and can't cut). He first meets Kamiya Kaoru who is on a mission to save the honor of her father's dojo by defeating a killer who claims he is the Battosai(Kenshin) and received his teaching in the Kamiya Dojo.He tries to keep up his innocent wanderer facade but ends up revealing his identity by helping her. Kaoru takes a liking to Kenshin and wants him to stay. Next up is Myoujin Yahiko. A 10 year old boy that Kenshin rescues from a gang of thieves that uses him as a pickpocket. Yahiko wants to train under Kenshin when he sees his sword skill but Kenshin does not want to pass on his technique and urges him to train under Kaoru. Sanosuke Sagara is Kenshin next foe. He is hired to kill Kenshin. Sanosuke dislikes him because Kenshin worked for the government in his past and Sanosuke was part of a group called the Sekihoutai who were betrayed by the government. He is a 19 year old lanky hot head who initially fought with a huge sword called the Zanbatou, but reverts to his fists when he is defeated by Kenshin. He and Kenshin become fast friends and one more person is added to the mix. Takani Megumi begs to stay with them at the dojo to escape someone who is chasing them. She cures Yahiko who has been hit by a poisonous dagger that was meant for her and gains their trust. Sanosuke soon finds that one of his friends died from Opium and finds opium on Megumi. She is being forced to produce a very special form by a man called Kanryu. A group called the Oniwaban works for Kanryu. More is revealed when Kenshin finds that an a man from his past is the most evil man in japan. Makoto Shishio fought with Kenshin in the war, but when the government officials realized all wasn't going well they ordered him to be burned alive covering up all their secrets but he lived on. Kenshin and his crew now had to tackle the evil that Shishio is threatening to unfurl.

Art

This is your typical anime. The characters themselves are very well drawn and their walk, hair, clothes, etc. compliment their characters very well. The backgrounds are usually of mountainsides or forests (we are talking about the Meiji Era), but they are very well executed and are quite pretty. The fighting scenes themselves are usually short and quick even though they are sometimes drawn out with dialouge. So there isn't much isn't much to compare to realistic movements. It is done in a very crisp and clean style. No sketchy lines to infer a darker tone. All around its pretty pleasing to the eye, but they aren't mind blowing.

Sound

I've watched the dubbed version and I have to say that they voice actors are very good. They have the voices that you think they would have if they were real people. The background music compliments whatever is going on at the moments. It can be serene and peaceful but also action packed when necessary. It also matches the time period. It has the instruments that you would expect. Not jam packed with techno music. The OST is very sugary and upbeat. It doesn't totally match the feel of the story but it is catchy.

Presentation

I really liked this anime. I have never quite seen an anime like it, but some might disagree with that. I'm not an expert on anime dealing with ancient japan and samurais. But it is not so original when it comes to duels. It is your typical one blow hit and usually a more powerful move is revealed when confronting a more powerful enemy. From the initial story line one would expect it to be very serious, but it is full of funny scenes. Examples of this is the sometimes fierce competition for Kenshin between Megumi and Kaoru. Sanosuke constantly not paying his bills to the Akabeko, a local restaurant. The fights that Yahiko and Kaoru go through like brother and sister both not wanting to admit that they are mirror images of one another (at heart). And not to mention the unexpected innocent and clueless personality that Kenshin chooses to show most of the time. His short stature (about 5ft 3in) is sometimes misunderstood as a measure of his strength. It is very fun to watch all the antics they go through. Ranging from encouraging a unconfident sumo wrestler to taking on Shishio himself.

i know its a very high rating, but Rurouni K is in the best animes ever, I recommend seriously the OAVs more than the series, wich is a bit too long

Good start of a review, as it's a long anime could use some details, but can't argue against the ratings.
