Plot Synopsis

Story & Characters

My biggest problem with Outlaw Star, unfortunately, has to do with one of an anime’s most important aspects – the story. The series simply takes to long to deliver some decent story telling. Later in the series, the plot really heats up and starts to deliver in massive proportions, but viewers could be turned off by the nonexistence of a good plot in the beginning. I cannot emphasize enough that you should stick with Outlaw Star if you are having doubts. The story, when it gets going, turns out to be really fantastic, and it’s a shame it didn’t pick up earlier in the series. Once it gets going the plot is very intriguing, and each episode makes the search for the Galactic Leyline more and more exciting. The mood changes a lot, swinging back and forth from happy to depressing and back. Characterization is good. Each character has his/her own unique personality and motive. You just have to love everybody in this anime. The series starts out slow and kind of bland, as I said, and moves into more serious subject matter--so stick in there. don't judge this book by it's cover.

Art

The animation in Outlaw Star is very unique. It has a very manga-like look to it that is both easy to look at and fun to watch. Combined with the art style, Outlaw Stars strong suit iis its characters. Gene is exceptionably likeable; he gets all the ladies and takes down the bad guys with style. When the show really shines, however, is when the entire crew of Outlaw Star has been assembled. All of the supporting roles are really unique and interesting. No matter who is on the screen you have to be intrigued because most every character is likeable and enjoyable to watch.

Sound

The sound may be overly done and overly 'heroic' for most peoples' taste. It seems to suit the anime well at times and not well at other times. The dubbing is consistent from what i've seen, but every time aisha the ctarl ctarl opens her fat mouth and screams a string of words I feel a desperate need to cover my ears. While the sound quality is good, some of the voices are just obnoxious and seem unsuited to that character. One thing that jarred me was the opening titles theme song, a bit too holky for me. It makes me wonder how well revered the music is in Japan and whether or not it's all a matter of semantics.

Presentation

Perhaps the most appealing aspect about Outlaw Star is its incredible action sequences. he mechanical designs are the best I have seen yet and the ship-to-ship battles are very impressive. Fans of action should definitely not pass this series up, because the fighting is awesome. All of the characters have a distinct fighting style and weapon, so the action never gets stale. Another thing that makes it so enjoyable is that for all the action there is always some complementary comedy. Whether it’s one of Genes wisecracks or some senseless bickering between him and Jim Hawking, it is always laugh out loud funny and really adds to the experience. So although the series has a lot too offer those who are patient... Outlaw Star still hasn't fully chosen a course or found its stride, but it's moving in the right direction. As both its grating-yet-charming main character and its big Western-style universe come into sharper focus, they're developing a smarmy charm that makes it hard to actively dislike the series ... although it's still easy to turn it off without too much regret.
