RahXephon tv Review

Story & Characters

Rahxephon is a great series, with a really great plot. The plot is very unique, having to due with the world in crisis, and the "instrumentalist" that needs to tune the world before it ends. Basically in short, it's the Mulians versus the humans. The Mulians are blue blooded, over-powerful people trying to erase the existence of mankind. So the story tells of the struggle of the humans, fighting for their very survival.

While the plot may be unique, it feels there are a few schematics in the story that remind me of Evangelion. For instance, Ayato being a teenage boy, pulled from his normal world to to work for an organization called Terra, and pilot a huge robot called Rahxephon. Kinda like Shinji...Also, "Dolems" are what come and attack instead of angels. All in all, Rahxephon does have it's uniqueness, but times when you see parts of the storyline somewhat familiar.

Overall, I personally was very interested in the overall story itself. Basically, if you liked Evangelion, I'm sure you'll like this. If you haven't seen Eva, I would recommend seeing this anyway. The story isn't as dark and twisted, but is still relatively wierd, but definitely still awesome.

Art

The animation is awesome. It's very smooth and crisp, generally. I don't think I ever saw a scene where a character was badly drawn at all. Each character was full of their own personality, and I think, perfectly represented in their expression and body movement. The series bring you back to nature often, giving you very romantic scnese. But also, there are awesome fight scenes as well, with jet pilots battling for their lives, and the Rahxephon wooping butt. Also, the timing in the animation is lovely, always creating a god atmosphere, whether it be slow and romantic, or fast action. The artwork is very lovely. In one instance, one character, Mishima Reika, is standing over the ruins of Tokyo, in yellow dress blwing in the wind. It's a strange scene, yet, entirely romantic.

Sound

Being that the series is about saving the world with an instrumentalist, a lot of music and sound is involved. The music throughout the series is very elegant, and very matching to each scene. I don't think any music is overused either. There isn't much repitition of music, so you don't get the feeling that you've heard that song just in the last episode. A few times, there are characters playing instruments. Some of those scenes are my favorites. The music there is just awesome, composed very beautifully to go along perfectly with the animation.

As for the voice actors, and think they do a good job. Japanese audio that is. The English dub however, isn't all that great. I've heard MUCH worse, however, they at least do an okay job. I only watched a little in English, and the rest in Japanese with subs, but from what I've seen, English dub wasn't all that great. Unless you prefer dub over sub, I would probably recommend watching it with the Japanese audio track.

Presentation

This series, as I said before, has a lot of orignality. Of course, just like almost all otehr series, there are a few "borrowed" plot points in the series. Overall though, the series is very original. The characters personality of going through what no other teenage kids normally go through, and how it is represented is really original. At times, you sit there yourself thinking about how you've said certain things before when you were mad or sad. This is not just another "mecha anime" as some might think it is.

Another twist in the story, is the two worlds involved. The human world, and Mulian world. Mulians being what the humans are trying to defend themselves against. In these two worlds, coexisting with each other, in one, time flows regularly, and in the other, time flows much more slowly. Since, the two worlds are a bit mixed up, as you'll see if you watch it, family and friends seperate. Two lovers at a young age, seperated, meet each other again, one still being young, and the other grown-up. This throws a lot more substance into the plot, rahter than just having any other ordinary love story in a series...

Your review was great, ultimaslair! The only point that i disagree of you was when you compared EVA to RahXephon. In my opinion, Evangelion has deep gaps in the storyline, and the anime itself tries to be more cult than it really is. On the other side, RahXephon don't have a bunch of depressive teenagers, but characters with a extremely deep psychological side.

This anime has used marvelous drops of good and old philoshophy, and thanks to this "instrumentalist" part of the story, the soundtrack rises as an important part of anime. Congratulations to Hashimoto for the wonderful musical work.

    Good review, ultimaslair!

one of the first reviews on mt ! at any rate, nicely structured review. I wish the dubbing of rahxenphen could have been better, but over all I wish there had been more to the anime as well.

Good review, the only problem I had with this anime was the sound problem, the audio was low and off, but I agree with this review otherwise.
