Tenjou Tenge tv Review

Story & Characters

What can I really say about the story? When I first heard about Tenjo Tenge I heard people say that they wouldn't watch it for the story but for the fighting, etc. I happen to really love a great story but I always give things a try, so I watched a few episodes. Having not read the Manga, the Story actually seems very detailed. At first glance you can't help but feel you're in for a smash-your-face fest but that all changes as you get to know the characters more. There are detailed backgrounds that they get into which really helps to draw you into the anime. My only problem is they don't get into the backgrounds of everyone in the show before it ends. I'd like to give this a score higher than 8 but I can't because while I enjoyed the story over the 24 episode run, it seemed fragmented to me and incomplete.... like I just saw the beginnings of something and nothing more. Much of the anime is spent in flash-backs of the past. I feel like the main characters are people OTHER than the ones you see in the beginning. They were certainly the main characters at first, but the focus of these 24 episodes was not on the poeple you would expect. My only hope is that they continue with this and give us a second season so that we can see how things develop further.

Art

For the most part, I was happy with the art and animation. Smooth and detailed it seemed to have a very fluid style that I found pleasing. My only problem would have to be the size of breats these women have. I mean it's really one of the first things that stands out (no pun intended) when you see them for the first time. I sat and wondered how it was even possible a woman with that size of breasts could stand straight and keep her balance. There is some suspension of disbelief that has to be taken, but watching these women jump and flip around as they fight seems impossible. They aren't there for comic effect either... it's just purely put in for the fanboy to oggle over. I prefer a slight bit of realism here.

Sound

It's one of the few anime that I can't help but watch the open credits almost every time I see an episode. I usually fast forward through these but something about this one keeps me watching. Other than that, the music and sound effects are decent but nothing that stands out to me. I can't see muself listening to the soundtrack at work and re-living the events of the anime like I have with some other ones. There were no really memorable tunes through-out the episodes and while I thought the ending theme was decent it still didn't capture my interest.

Presentation

To me this is the kind of anime that has the qualities I find very endearing. It has a good story, with good action and good re-watchability... it just doesn't go far enough. The most memorable parts of the entire series is the backstory behind Maya, Mitsuomi, Bunshichi and Shin. You're drawn in to finding out what the heck happened to cause things to be the way they are and the anime was successful at keeping me interested. The problem is my interest was never really satisfied. When the audience is left feeling empty (or rather half-full in this case) at the end of a series it can skew their views of the entire thing as a whole. There were too many questions left unanswered... too many plot lines that we saw the beginnings of but then nothing more. I'd hate to think it was a ploy to get people to read the Manga, but it is my sincere hope that they continue the anime to answer some of the questions still left up in the air. The ending was left open-ended enough that it seems a reasonable conclusion. As a whole, I really enjoyed the series and plan to purchase the DVDs when they come out. I think I'd get great enjoyment watching it again. With the combination of good story, good action, and good art how can you go wrong?

I agree. It's a good anime - you wanna give it a better rating but you just can't 'cause it's missing so many elements, especially the unanswered questions. I wonder if they'll make a second season...

I am unsure about the anime after just one volume. Since I have read some of the manga already before seeing the anime, the anime is having a hard time living up to the expectations I had for it set by the manga. That said it is good, but I do think the manga is better even if it has been "edited" a tad too much in translation.

How can you read the "edited" version of the manga? Doesn't it disgust you that a mature rated manga has been edited down to a teen level comic for the sole purpose of marketing?

the anime's alrite but the manga's better. too bad CMX had to cut chop it down to make it a teen rating. really disappointed after seeing the original Japanese mangas

There's a translation of the orginial unedited version going around online for volumes 1-13. I could help anyone who wants it.

My interest in anime is new, b4 i saw an episode of tenjho tenge i enjoyed the anime artwork but that was about it. As my knowledge in anime is minimal i'd appreaciate it if anyone can point me in another show's direction, one that is similar to tenjho tenge.
    Thnx.
