God Eater game Review

Story & Playability

Story Introduction
The game is set on Earth - where a mysterious organism known as the Aragami infests the face of the world.
Devouring everything in it's path , the Aragami has efficiently reduced the overall population of the planet to a bare minimum.
However , a new group known as the "Gods Eater" were formed to suppress and purge this threat - at least , it is so until the Aegis Project could be implemented - a safe haven for humankind.

Story Overview
The plot of Gods Eater is a unique one - not masterfully crafted but you can't help but love it all the same.

Unlike other apocalyptic tales where a meteor simply drops on our heads - Gods Eater has constructed an entire chain of information regarding the threat known as the "Aragami" - from the fact that they are actually a cluster of Oracle Cells bounded together to form an organism to the origin of the elites known as the "Gods Eater"
Essentially , this game features a "plot science" which allows the player to gain a greater understanding of the world which the plot takes place in.

It is also interesting to see these elements being implemented upon the actual storyline itself and how it had affected the characters as the story progresses.

As for the actual plot of Gods Eater - it isn't perfectly made since events occurs too rapidly in succession and it's lacking in "minor events" to fill up the gap between these "primary and major events" of the plot.
Thus , it feels fairly rushed and punctured so the flow of the plot isn't entirely what one would call "well-managed"
Though it is to be noted that even for those whom doesn't read up the lore of the game ( Which is easily understandable ) - it is still possible to understand what is going on provided that you pay attention in the cutscenes.

Despite the bumpy plot flow , however , the player would rapidly find themselves growing on the characters - each with their own desires , background and troubles.
It is also interesting to see that despite the fact that the Main Character is a Customizable Character - which would usually mean he or she would have little influence in the storyline - the MC of the game has played an important role and had influenced those around him / her at specific points of the storyline.

In a way , it's pretty impressive to see how the plot is made whilst ensuring that the main character plays a vital role in the events of Gods Eater. Whilst it doesn't provide a "different perspective depending on your gender" like in Persona 3 Portable - the cutscenes and plot mechanism seems to work regardless of the player's gender.

Graphics

Graphics Review
Whilst it's nothing like Crisis Core - one can hardly find faults in the physics and movements of the characters and monsters of this game.
Consider it one of the games which one would call "When Anime meets 3D Graphics" - for that is exactly the theme of the 3D models of the game. Maybe Persona would be a better reference but eh... I'll leave it at that.

As for the actual terrains in question , it isn't exactly quite as well-made as Monster Hunter owing to the lack of props and there isn't this major background which makes you gape in awe - but the texture of the terrain isn't that worst off and is generally distinct in it's own way.

Generally - you wouldn't find graphical details in this game which is at the levels of that of Final Fantasy , Monster Hunter or perhaps The 3rd Birthday ( Just to name a few ) - but it isn't exactly that much worst off either.

If I have any complaints - I'd say that they need to make better cutscenes... in other words , rather than using models from the game itself to recreate a scenario - why not make it cinematic?
There are precious few Anime cutscenes in this game for one.

Character and Monster Design
The characters of this game have designs which are hard to forget.
In fact , I'm reminded of Persona where the design is simplistic and yet - hard to forget and distinct in it's own way.
Other than the fact that characters like Sakuya , Alise and Tsubaki are showing us their wonderful assets , the dudes of the game have a pretty interesting dress sense as well.

Soma and his hoodie , Kota and his... whatever his wearing , Lindow and his jacket and not to mention - the large variety of outfits to choose from for the player character.

As for the monsters themselves - well , some of the looks odd rather than impressive but there are some pretty memorable designs like the Vajra , Ouroborus and the Hannibal.
As the game has suggested , the designs of the monsters are probably closely linked to folklore and some of the monsters have a certain "goddess-like" appearance to them.

Some of the monsters - however - does appear to be like animals and that too - has been mentioned in the game. ( If you looked through the terminals , it would be mentioned that Oracle Cells takes on the traits of whatever it had devoured )

So in a way , it's pretty interesting to see how certain plot elements would affect the design of the Aragami.

Sound

Music Review
Gods Eater does not feature some hardcore rock music which would shake your heart off in the middle of the battle but the game itself have a rather interesting selection of songs for it's combat scenarios.
It makes one feel as though they are truly challenging a small God of sorts - whilst bringing forth the elements of the map the player is fighting in.

The unique songs of the game had set it apart from Monster Hunter - a game which it resembles and is perhaps based on.

Not to mention the songs played in specific scenarios had truly brought forth the finer elements of the game.
Such as "No Way Back" - which makes the player feel like a total bad ass or perhaps the ending theme "My Life" which brought forth the more teary aspects of the game.

Voice Acting ( English )
English Voice Acting - words which rings terror down the spine of Anime fans.
However , the English Voice Acting of Gods Eater is actually at the height of excellence and are fitting of their roles.
From Sakuya's mature and sisterly voice to Soma's brooding mumbles - not to mention the large variety of voices made available to the Character Customization Screen - every grunt , moan , yell , yelps and scream was impressively done.

In fact , I'd probably say that it's probably one of the few English voice casts which doesn't make me feel awkward as though their reading off a book or something.
... Well , other than Ren - whose voice is actually quite cheesy but hey , not many could pull off a shota's voice in English.

Fun

This is a Review of Gods Eater Burst
Despite the unstable flow of the general storyline - Gods Eater has featured a unique "structure" which serves as the foundation of the plot and a cast of characters whom you can't help but fall for.
Whilst it's not exactly perfectly made - the strengths of this game is great enough for one to overlook it's faults.
You'd be looking at this game like an uncle surveying his favorite nephew.
Still , admittedly , the game have it's repetitive moments and like I said , the flow of the story as a whole isn't wonderfully done.
Either way , it's a game with both significant strengths and equally significant flaws.

Overall ( Others )

Gameplay
What this game needs is a wider variety of monsters.
Whilst each monster have their own distinct move sets , weaknesses and strategy to beat the living daylights out of them - the player can't help but feel that their fighting the same thing over and over again.
There are like three different sub-races of the Vajra and 3-5 or so for the other species of Aragami - but their moveset is almost the same but their just tougher , have additional moves and takes less time to recover from an attack.

It's like fighting the same monster for several chapters' worth.

Admittedly , having the DLC helps a bit since it includes two unique monsters with a more bizzare moveset - but it doesn't change the fact that it can get a bit dry if your fighting the same thing again and again.

However , at later ranks , the game would start lumping several large monsters in a single map for the player to deal with and that's when things starts to look bright again.
Dealing with a single monster is pretty easy since they get predictable after sometime but dealing with an entire HERD of them is a different tale.

Which pretty much means the player would have to - for once - use their brains in their battles and execute it with equal skill.

Bullet Customization
What makes this game distinct is that there is both a blade form and a gun form - allowing the player to shift between melee and ranged combat.

To top it all off - you can create your very own bullet.

At later stages of the game - the player have a wide variety of bullet types to choose from. Making a bullet is quite fun and if your good at it , you can craft powerful bullets of which to call your own.
Of course , most of it is just trial and error but with enough brains and determination , you can pretty much create a bullet which would aid you greatly in your battles - or just appear flashy before your friends.

Bullet customization - and I'm not exaggerating it - is one of the reasons why this game is fun.

Weapon Types
The weapon variety of Gods Eater isn't all too impressive but it suffices most basic combat needs and playing styles.
A short sword for players whom favors speed , a long sword for player whom seeks a balanced gameplay or a Buster Sword for those whom wants ample power to crack skulls with.

There are also three different type of guns and shields.

For guns , we have a Cannon - which offers better firepower for explosive bullets. Sniper rifles for piercing shots and a Gatling Gun for rapid fire purposes.

For shields , we have a buckler , a shield and a tower shield.

To top it all off , the player isn't limited to equipping a Buster Sword to a Tower Shield - he or she is free to experiment around with the components for maximum combat efficiency.

AI Partners
What really sets this game apart from other monster hunting games is that it have EFFICIENT AI PARTNERS.
Whilst it may - by theory - make the game a lot easier , the flow of the battle is still determined by the player's performance and at later stages of the game , even with partners a battle may still be tough.

Interestingly , each character have their own unique battle patterns - not to mention the benefits they offer so the player can form a plan beforehand - deciding who to bring to their current task.
For example - Sakuya is an excellent sniper and Medic , but she's also vulnerable to attacks since she can't block with a shield.
Kanon have powerful blast shots , but is weaker medic as compared to Sakuya and she tends to disrupt the player's attacks.
Kota have powerful rapid-fire shots but runs out of ammunition quickly.

So the idea is to think about who to fit your battle style and techniques.

Trivia
- There is an Anime of Gods Eater - but it is a prequel which takes place during Soma , Sakuya and Lindow's time.
- Gods Eater II will be on the PSP and it features two additional weapons. A Lance and a Hammer.

I hope I didn't read the review and miss it, but what game console does this come on at the moment, I noticed psp but is that what it on now or will be on? sorry if I misread or didn't read that part, sometimes my mind doesn't process things well :( since I only own a DS that might be mildly hard, although I might be coming into ownership of a ps3. but I have never heard of this and it strikes me as something that would interest me greatly. I was attempting a search and I was only coming up with Gods Eater Burst to psp only. might also try to find the anime, might help open up for the game play excellent review, only the console question the rest I fully understood :) sorry for my confusion it doesn't take much after all ;)

Hmm, I'm always looking for more good PSP games, and this one sounds neat, but the story flow might be enough to turn me off. :/ After all, that's pretty much why I have so much trouble getting into games like FF12 that don't have enough smaller cut-scenes/story inbetween huge story scenes.

Great organization, and I like that it feels like you're writing the way you would talk. Nice job once again Z! :)

I was really looking forward to God Eater after seeing some scans submitted on both MT and AP, and I'm really glad I got a chance to sit down and play it. While my years of playing RPGs has sort of exhausted me, and unfortunately leaves me a little bored when it comes to dungeon crawlers, I found myself immersed in what God Eater had to offer.

With that in mind, I would completely agree with your score. I never got a chance to finish God Eater, but I feel that your score is not only incredibly fair, but also very balanced as well. Highlighting both the positives and negatives that this series had within it.

Hopefully, I can sit down and play the game once again when I get a bit more free time! Great review, Z!
