Mushishi

Mushishi tv Review

Imagine that there are creatures that are neither vegetables nor animals, but they are the very essence of the life living around us. Imagine that not everyone can see them, but they can influence your life in the strangest manner. They are called "mushi".

Ginko is a "mushishi"; a mushi hunter. Follow him as he wanders across the land, studying, healing, and teaching, trying to help normal people to live in harmony with mushi.

Story & Characters

The story is about a wanderer named Ginko. Ginko has an unusual white hair and unearthly green eyes (His left eye is actually made of glass) as a result of an incident that occurred when he was a mere child. For some reason Ginko wears modern clothing and the story takes place imaginary time period between the Edo and the Meiji periods. Ginko is no ordinary wanderer Ginko is a Mushi Master. Basically what Mushi Masters do is solve various mushi cases by aiding people that are suffering from problems caused by them and research the Mushi. Mushi are ubiquitous creatures that often display supernatural powers. Mushi are described as beings in touch with the essence of life, far more basic and pure than normal living things. Due to their ethereal nature most humans are incapable of perceiving Mushi and are oblivious to their existence, but there are a few who possess the ability to see and interact with Mushi. There wasn’t really an over-arching plotline. Ginko is a rare person who attracts mushi. This inspires his peripatetic lifestyle. Staying in one place too long will gather a potentially dangerous amount of mushi. He also smokes constantly in order to keep mushi away. In terms of personality, Ginko is rather laid back. However, he can be very serious when it comes to protecting people from Mushi. He also often stresses that the Mushi are not evil, but merely trying to survive like everyone else.

Mushi-shi has 26 episodes total and a Live-Action Movie. Every episode begins and ends so basically every episode is different. Mushi-shi Manga won an Excellence Prize at the 2003 Japanese Media Arts Festival, the 2006 Kodansha Manga Award, and the 5th Tokyo Anime Award competition held at the Tokyo International Anime Fair in 2006.

Art

The art for the characters in Mushi-shi is simple and plain. But the forest or nature backgrounds are beautiful. It seems like they were aiming more towards the scenery than the characters because there wasn’t a whole lot of variety in the characters design (excluding Ginko) which I am completely fine with since the scenery makes up for all of it. (Sorry for the short Art review.)

Sound

Music: As for the music it was quite calm and peaceful but also haunting. Most of the music in Mushi-shi is pretty slow and somber. But even though the music’s slow and somber it matches the series very well because most of the series is slow and somber itself. They tried to maintain the imaginary time period between the Edo and the Meiji periods setting by using a basic piano/synthesizer, bells, chimes, ECT… So there weren’t any heavy instruments in the music. A good example of the music in Mushi-shi would be “No Theme” by Toshiro Masuda.

Voice Acting: Side characters strangely have voices that are quite hard to distinguish from one another. But recurring characters are easy to distinguish from the other characters. The narrator has an elderly female voice which draws attention from the viewer.
The voice actors for the main character and the recurring characters are the following:
 Ginko: Voiced by: Yuto Nakano (Japanese), Travis Willingham (English)
 Adashino: Voiced by: Yuji Ueda (Japanese), Chuck Huber (English)
 Nui: Voiced by: Mika Doi (Japanese), Jennifer Seman (English)

Presentation

Mushi-shi is a pretty simple series but it can also be complex, how Ginko deals with Mushi is interesting and enjoyable. The story was thought through I imagine since the story was so amazing. Since every episode begins and ends you are capable of going back to any episode you found was most intriguing and Rewatch it once again. Plus you can't go wrong with an anime that has won several awards can you? In my opinion I believe that Mushi-shi should be watched in English it may sound strange but it seems like the English voice actors fit the characters more than the Japanese voice actors but of course that is only my opinion. I find it more suitable for an audience with a more mature state of mind.

as this is your first review, I have to say the concept is very good. I do agree with the review, this anime was quite good, but when doing a review, remember to keep it reviewing the tv aspect and not throwing in other things, it can cause some friction in the review, although it was interesting how you listed the info there in the second paragraph of the review in the story section. but I feel there can be some tweaking that can/could be done, but this is your first review, so don't take the critique too personally. you could have lengthened the review by listing characters perhaps, at least touching more on the main character, explaining more about those he encounters and since you felt you liked the english version over the japanese, you could have listed more why you felt it was more suited. also you did list the character voices in the sound, but that doesn't help those that haven't seen this, they don't/might not know anything about the character/anime. there were slight spoilers, but it did help the review alone, it was a strong start, but it started to weaken rather quickly. please do not let this critique discourage you :) I hope to see more of your reviews in the future, it's always interesting to see people doing reviews, rather if they are the "old hands" or just starting out

Me and my sister LOVE this anime and this is a pretty spot on review, the only thing i disagree with is I think this anime needs a 10 to art I loved the art style.

Nice, short review. Sometimes short is fine because people like me are too lazy to read huge paragraphs. XD
I haven't seen this anime, but now I'm going to try watching it after my exams... The concept with the mushi is interesting and confusing.... o-o; but the art is attracting me haha.

I have to admit, I'm quite curious about Mushishi, but there are a few things I'm not real clear on, and I think giving examples of what Mushi do and how Ginko handles them might have helped give more insight. Also in the story section I would recommend adding more about your personal opinions on characters, atmosphere, etc. and working on sentence phrasing a bit to make it flow better. While that may sound critical, I think you did a nice job on your art and sound sections and that this is well done overall for your first try! I'm curious to read more reviews from you. :)
