Bible Black game Review

Story & Playability

Twelve years ago, a group of students performed various magic spells as a sort of cult. It slowly got too far until, on the night of the Walpurgis (i.e. the night when the power of evil was at its strongest), they made a human sacrifice and performed a terrible spell. Some rumors say that they all died. Some say they got dragged into the spirit realm. Some say it's all a myth. One thing's for sure, the room in the school basement they used to practice in was locked and no one was allowed in. Ever.

Back to the present day, you play the role of Minase, a high school student, who finds the whole concept of there being such a thing as magic as totally ludicrous. One day, however, he finds these rumors were getting out of hand and decides to set things straight once and for all. He goes to staff room and steals the key to the basement storage room. He goes down and finds the room set up to do a ritual of some sort. Upon feeling around for a light-switch, he finds a brick that moves. Odd. He takes the brick out and finds a strange book. In it, he finds instructions for various spells and rituals to do all sorts of things. He decides, on a whim (remember, he doesn't believe in this magic crap) to try out some of the black magic in the book. He decides to set a spell to induce public humiliation on Ito (especially after she made fun of him not believing in magic). Nothing seemed to happen at first, until suddenly, in the middle of the class, Ito stands up, walks to the front of the class, strips and masturbates in front of everyone. Could this be the power of the book?

The game goes on and Minase finds that the book's power is incredible and finds that the magic has extreme sexual effects on people. However, the book hides a much deeper secret. Will Minase continue to use the book's power for his own means and reap the consequences? Or will he use it for good. Then again, maybe he won't use it at all. What if one of his classmates got the book? And of course, who knew that one of his teachers made a pact with the devil?

The game has twelve different endings in all which are affected by the various options you choose in the game. Some endings are bad (as in Minase is evil), some are good and there is one "true" ending (which is very hard to get, but ultimately worth it). Since I do my best to provide spoiler free reviews (unlike some other game reviewers) I won't go into too much detail. Just believe me when I say that there's plenty of H to go around!

This is a fairly generic visual-novel in terms of gameplay. The usual pick choices = certain ending. One thing I did notice is that sometimes you get just a single option that you must take. It seems quite odd that they'd put in an option when you can only choose that one option anyway. Also, you sometimes get two options such as "Option 1: go down stairs, Option 2: take a look around". Pressing 1 says "it is too dark" and returns you to the options again. You can't proceed until you select option 2 to turn the light on. I felt it was a little odd, but it makes you pay attention to what's happening at the very least.

Graphics

Many CGs are unlockable and all of normal quality. In between scenes though (i.e. during normal conversation) the characters don't seem to have many positions. In other words, they generally just stand there and "talk". Other than that, there isn't much I can talk about for graphics.

Sound

Bible Black follows the general industry standard of having full voice acting for all the non-player characters. However, Bible Black takes this one step further. The player's character gets the voice actor treatment too! This could be a pro and it could also be a con too. It depends on how you feel about it. You have the option in the game to turn off the male character's voices if you really don't like it, but it's not too bad. As always with this sort of thing, each to their own. As far as the music goes, it's fairly generic stuff. Some of the music is re-used a bit too often, but other than that, there isn't anything notable.

Fun

Bible Black's an odd one to be honest. I like the game, but the storyline's just a bit TOO unrealistic at times and rather over focused on sex in parts too! Plus, I find the whole concept of "futanari"s a bit disturbing, but that's just me. Putting this aside, the game's fairly well made apart from the many many types and translation errors. There's plenty of replay value, especially since some of the endings are really hard to find.

Although I kinda dislike this game. If you like games that have a large focus on sex and a rather unrealistic story-line, give this a go! If you're not into your strange fetishes, don't touch this game with a ten foot pole, it may disturb you a lot!

You have balance issues in your review. Sure, some sections will be more in depth than others but there really shouldn't be a huge disparity between them all. The thing that causes this is that you don't quickly summarize the plot and instead opt for a wall of text. People want the quick and dirty. The setup, the overarching theme and the atmosphere. Get it out there and then get on with what should be the main part of your review...

Which all leads to the main problem; YOUR opinion is what a review should be all about. That was something you seriously lacked in this review. Where is your recollection of your experience with this game? What were the bright spots? Where did you lose interest? How did certain aspects make you feel? You described various aspects to us but you didn't really delve into how this shaped your experience.

Finally, check your grammar and make sure that it properly matches the score. The "sentence" that really highlights this point is "Although I kinda dislike this game." We have the issue with it obviously being a sentence fragment but the more perplexing thing is that this section then gets a 6. Dislike does not equal average score.

Don't get discouraged just take some time to put in some effort on your reviews. Take any and all advice you get on your reviews and try to apply it from here on out. I know that when I go back and look at my first few reviews versus what I put out now, I see a huge difference. I found my stride, the tone I liked to have and how I liked to have it structured. Even still, many reviews later, there's still plenty of room for improvement.

I'm going with shoujoboy on this one, the rating is way off, if you didn't like something then why give it such a high rating? you have a lot of work to do, and it would be wise to do grammar and spelling checks, it actually does help and brings in comments as well as more people are eager to read, not to mention words flows better if someone doesn't have to struggle to figure it out. I have played this game and seen the anime and I rather liked it, and I'm not certain your opinions are so eager to help the review alone, it actually causes putting on the brakes.

it would have been nice to list some more information in the graphics section, it seemed sort of generic and plain as well as possibly rushed just to submit it sort of thing. you could have touched on the aspects of how the graphics were, to your opinion, "normal quality". you have to note that there aren't many VN reviewers around here let alone VN players (as another user pointed out in earlier reviews).

as a few have been deleted, try to tweak and take critique in a positive way and work on it to expand, you're still doing them in a "young" fashion, if you want to perfect just take what you're told and work with it, I know from my first review to present things have changed. if all else fails look about in past reviews and take notes, that's what I do :)

    I'm guessing it's... GUILTY PLEASURE.
Lol , let's face it , Bible Black is notorious for it's graphics and... eeh... graphical content , but everyone else is plastered to it like worms on a sandwich. Like Taimanin Asagi , it's what one would call "Guilty Pleasure".
If your a full-blooded male and is not a monk , priest or some kind of religious figure - it's hard to believe that they wouldn't - at the very least , turn red at the sight of this.

Also , mentioning something like "other game reviewers' is a mite bit offensive and like I said before , the story sector needs more opinion and less introduction.
Fattening a summary of the prologue of a Visual Novel = / = a review - I did something like this when I started off.

Graphics sector requires more elaboration. From lightning to shadowing , artwork style and general theme of the art - this is quite important for a VN since atmosphere does affect a VN's experience as a whole.

As for the sound sector - you need elaboration on the music sector. Music is often re-used for Visual Novels - particularly VNs with less than 20 tracks.
It is also not entirely impossible for protagonists to have voice actors - some Visual Novels do have a voice actor for the main character though it is indeed rare.

Also , which VN is not unrealistic? :X
They either have too much drama , feature loli magical girls , have a girl falling from the sky one day , summon a demon to your doorstep or involve a series of mass r*pe done by a single person.

Still , there are improvements made , significant changes at that. Keep up the good work and you'd be on your feet in no time :D

As some of the others mentioned, it would be great if you would talk more about your personal reactions to the game and whether or not the characters, atmosphere, etc. are well made or not. Also, while I appreciate the short and sweet, the graphics section could probably be fleshed out a bit more.

    On another note....

Quote: Since I do my best to provide spoiler free reviews (unlike some other game reviewers) I won't go into too much detail.

I'm not sure what exaclty you're trying to say by this, but if there are reviews here at MT you find spoilerish, please report them or let me know. At MT we generally don't allow spoilers. :)

I know that you've gotten a lot of critiques, but please don't be discouraged! Look at it as an opportunity to improve, and I know you'll be in great shape in no time. This game is definitely not for me, but I hope to see you write more reviews in the future! :)
