Gantz

Gantz tv Review

High school student Kei Kurono meets up with childhood friend Kato Masaru one day by chance encounter. As the two are in the subway chatting, Kato notices a homeless man on the subway train tracks. Kato goes down on to the tracks to move the man off the tracks and persuades Kei to help. But soon after helping the man, they are hit by a subway train and killed...

Or maybe not.

Immediately after being hit by the train, the two suddenly find themselves in an apartment from which they can't leave, along with some other people who were also in some near death experience. In this apartment there is also a black sphere called Gantz.

Kei and the others have to obey Gantz's rules if they want to live. They have to participate in missions in which the objective is to eliminate aliens. But who or what are these aliens? are Kei, Kato and the others alive or dead?

Story & Characters

I liked this series but I felt that there was too large a culture gap between me and everyone in the series even more so then normal. That being said I would like to say that Gantz was an enjoyable show a little short, and there is the culture gap but still enjoyable. The story itself is done well, it is about a school boy name Kurono who dies and is brought back to life. He is then forced to become an alien bounty hunter, with others. The show is set in present day Japan. That is pretty much the whole plot with a lot of ogling of women put in. The story itself is moves slowly at an almost snail like pace. There is not that much action and in comparison to what the title sequence would have you believe. There is a good deal of thinking and some speaking but mostly thinking in the show. The themes of the show aren’t really explored that well and much is left unsaid. I have only seen the first 11 episodes so this may have been the intent. The plot twists in the story are nice nothing that will make you say I never saw that coming but surprising none the less. The direction is also good not great but good. That is pretty much how I would sum up this show it could have been better but it wasn’t bad and better then ok.

Art

The art in this series was not inventive, it was not extraordinary, but it was good. The character design was pretty much the same as a good deal of other anime series I have seen. As for the backgrounds well it’s nothing special, there are some 3d backgrounds and I am not a fan but it’s nothing that should make you care. The design of the aliens is again nothing special. The only thing I can say that is positive about the art is that it’s better then the average animation that you would come across but that may just be me.

Sound

Music is an area where this show really shines in. It’s a mix of j-pop and an eclectic collection. The opening theme fits in quite well with the flow of the show, and so does the ending theme. There is some moment s where the background music may seem inappropriate but it is just the dark humor of the series or at least that’s my take on it. The sound effects are nice; they help to add to the total atmosphere of the show. The music of the show really helps it inch above others similarly qualified.

Presentation

Gantz my not be the best series I have in the last year but that is not to say it wasn’t enjoyable. The story was quite original and it felt new and fresh. The themes that the show tackles like suicide, being a pervert, obsessive compulsive disorder and a myriad of human short comings with out actual trying to say that they are wrong or having a moral is a big plus in my book. The story sort of says well they are just humans so ____-it I am not going to fix them. As for humor what can I say there is some black humor, it mostly has to do with the perverted main character and his adolescent minds almost debilitating obsession with the opposite sex. That begin said the show and series was a nice watch not really worth a second run through but nice the first time. The plot, characters and there false where quite good as well if for nothing then to look at how evil and petty we really are. A big problem I felt though was in the direction of the series. There where too many flashbacks and the story was really scattered to say the least that and it feels as though it took forever to do anything. The last down side is of course the culture gap, and even though you may not feel it at first it will hit you eventually and you feel sort of left out on the story. The last thing I have to say is that if you like Boogiepop or Lain then this might be a series you might want to check out if not the check it out if you have the time and energy.

Nice review, but a bit early since I don't think you can separate the two seasons ^^. Hum, the manga is a lot better I think, the serie is still interessant though, but it looses a bit of his impact if you watch the censored version. ( ^_^' sorry for my english ).

Like gaijin wrote, manga is a lot better. I read the manga b4 the anime and imho the anime is so slowwwwww... maybe the manga too, less but stills, but when reading a manga u control what u read (the speed of reading i mean), and it has many stuff that is not in the manga.

Well, gantz has one of the best drawing i ever saw, history is good too but sometimes I think hiroya oku turns the history of the manga to another direction too fast.

Not a bad review, it's a short anime but you did a decent job at the review.
