The Skull Man tv Review

Story & Characters

Plot: Set in an alternate history of Japan, freelance photographer Minagami Hayato returns to his hometown of Ootomo to investigate rumors of a man wearing a skull mask committing murders there. Once in the city, he discovers connections between the victims and a local pharmaceutical company, a new religious sect, and strange half human, half animal creatures. Along with a young photographer, he decides to find out who the Skull Man really is.

It's pretty much as the plot suggested, a gentleman wishing to capture the dreaded boogeyman of ?tomo City, Japan on film for his local newspaper. He is unlikely paired up with Kiriko Mamiya at a train station while preparing to enter ?tomo City.

After a visit to his father's grave Minagami Hayato is met up with some old friends and the day progresses. He then retires to his old place he use to live in only to find out he is now having the unlikely pleasure of being paired with Kiriko Mamiya because she doesn't have anywhere else to go. After a mishap and misunderstanding we get the honor of meeting the skull man thanks to the incident which takes place at his old place.

As time progresses (it's a time jump and hard to follow at times) we see many creatures start to appear, we are not certain how they got there but they are appearing everywhere and no one knows anything about them, yet the skullman appears to be after only these creatures, these mutants, these things which cannot be understood.

There is a major religion organization which dwells in ?tomo City by the name of Byakureikai. It's a very popular religion and that is where we meet Sara Kuroshio and her daughter Maya Kuroshio, both chairwomen of the religion, but Maya has a crush on a local priest and also enjoys helping orphans, her cover to go spend time with the priest by the name of Father Yoshio Kanzaki.

But it is believed that Tatsuo Kagura, who died ten years ago in an arson case is the reason why Hayato Mikogami visits now to get truth to a closure. The same with a certain private investigator by the name of Ky?ichir? Tachigi who arrives to help solve the mysteries about everything.

In the end, upon discovery of the skull man and the truth behind the secrets that G?z? Kuroshio himself usually takes care of any one and anything that dares tries to dig up these said secrets, even if that means murder, we find Hayato Mikogami unable to leave once he gets too far into the investigation and the discoveries of twists and turns begins to take place and in the end, the truth is revealed and it sets in a whole wave of events that cause ?tomo City to become victim to their own faith.

I have to admit the artwork was beyond anything I have ever seen or encountered. There were no budget cuts here. But BONES is famous for giving us outstanding state of the art and no slacking when it comes to detail. The fight scenes were like a combination of Hellsing and Cowboy Bebop, quite remarkable, nicely choreographed and no slacking for details. The details to the streets, the city, ruins, slums and even the street lights and trees were outstanding. This one scene where this gentleman was fishing, it felt as if you were fishing with him, the fish on the water, the ruins beneath the waters, there was no rock out of place, no blade of grass under drawn. I have to admit it's extremely gory and violent as well, so if you're not able to take violence and/or gore it might be too much for you, I thought even that was done extremely well.

The sound was outstanding, you could hear noises, like jar flies, winds blowing in the grass, and there was even detail to the sounds of people gargling fluids in their mouth. I really enjoyed the opening and ending theme for this anime, it helped me to find even more singers that I've never heard of, even the background music was placed properly, decently and discretely enough that it completed the anime. They even took the time to sub what was being played on a screen at a movie, I have never seen this done, most times it was just what the characters were saying. That part of the movie was hard to follow and I'm a speed reader, but somehow, after a few moments of the characters talking one of the characters explained the movie which tied it all together in a neat little package.

It's one of those unknown anime because it is only subbed or original it is not dubbed yet as far as I know. It's also a short anime of about 13 episodes long and one live action movie. There is slight ecchi in it, but for the most part the anime sucked me in by episode one, so I was able to look past all that, even with the time jumps within the anime and the ending left me with WTF, and it still does to this day, even sitting here typing this. I would have to say, over all this anime should be a must see if you're into dark, horror and scifi anime. I found this anime by accident mostly because I had seen everything else out there that was of interest to me so I had to turn to watching things I was uncertain on, I'm glad I did take a risk on this one. I even had to ask to have someone create tags for this due to it's unknown-ness and non existence here on mt. thanks CB :D (Yes a longer review this time since it's so unknown)

For those which do not like subbed then you are really missing out on a good anime, it's one of those anime that you can sit down and watch in a day's time if you so desire, there are not that many fillers, only a few flash backs which help the story along, but the fighting, the creatures, the details, the music, the ending was what really floored me, I don't do the spoiler thing, but for those that have seen this anime would know all about the ending.

As I leave you now to disappear into the busy streets, I leave you with this: One face is given to us by God. The other, we make ourselves.

Short but clear. I watched this 3 years ago and I don't like it, story is pretty cliche and the ending was CRAP. But what can you expect from a typical superhero-monster setup.

It's always nice to see a review for a series that gets little to no attention. I'm hoping to expand upon that once I can bring some more of my anime down here and re-watch it for reviewing purposes xD.

As for the show itself, it does intrigue me. I'm always down for a traditional superhero-monster setup and especially since it hasn't gotten much attention before, I'd like to fix that!

It's really nice to see another review from you, Xuan! Well done!

I must say I admire how much depth you get into while still keeping your reviews concise and readable. As a personal opinion, I'm curious to know more about aspects you liked/disliked about the story such as character development and delivery, but again that's largely personal and your review was quite thorough even without some of that.

I'm not really into gory animes or ones that focus on cults, but I still found your description rather interesting. Lovely job! I'll be eagerly awaiting your next review. :)

thanks for liking the review, I'm trying not to stress too much on giving away spoilers and I don't like to give too much personal attention, then it just becomes rambling, in my opinion. and if I was to list character development and delivery that could possibly leak out some spoilers, I like this one the way that it is, I do see where I could have added some details to it, but then it would sort of have lacked something and the focus would have been elsewhere.

I don't know what's next, but I will find something that's for sure :) I'm just having fun and just getting started, the errors I make before I will try to do better on my next ones, positive or negative comments always welcomed, helps me with my next one :)

Interesting Review there Bunny, I have never heard of this one, and as I don't have time to watch the stuff I do own and want to see, this does sound appealing to me to see sometime in the future.
