Freezing manga Review

Beings from a different dimension have started a war with mankind. To counter this threat an academy called Genetics that trains warriors wielding special weaponry and armor was formed. Kazuya Aoi decided to enroll in this school as a promise to his sister, a former warrior who died in battle. There he meets Satellizer El Bridgette nicknamed "Contact Prohibition Queen" due to her solitary demeanor. She is also the top student of the academy whose battle simulation streak was undefeated until he came...and changed her.

Story & Playability

= Story Introduction =
The story takes place in an alternate version of Earth , which is plaqued by a form of alienic lifeform called the "Nova".
To counter this threat , genetically modified women , called the Pandoras , along with their male partners , the Limiters , were raised and educated to protect humanity.
Kazuya Aoi finds himself enrolling into the West Genetics Academy , influenced by his late sister's actions , Kazuha Aoi.
However , he found a girl who bears a striking similarity with his sister and caused her to end up in trouble.
Ignoring the dark rumors circulating around her , whom is dubbed as the "Untouchable Queen" , Aoi finds himself striving to be Satellizer's Limiter.

= Terms Sypnosis =

= West Genetics Academy =
This is one of the schools which foster and instills training of the ways of a Pandora and a Limiter into young cadets.
Though perhaps not as strict as one would imagine it to be , order and respect towards one's senior seems to be an unspoken policy amongst the seniors of the school.

= Pandora =
Pandoras are essentially genetically modified women with Stigmata embedded into their bodies.
As a Pandora , they have enchanced healing capabilities , physical capabilities and not to mention being able the means to summon weapons against the Novas.

= Limiters =
Limiters are men who had formed a baptism with their female partners and have the ability to perform "Freezing"
Essentially , they serve as support units.

= Freezing =
Freezing is a field that surrounds a certain area which would cause specific targets to lose their mobility , which makes a Limiter's presence a must in most battles as they have the capability to neutralize the very same field that a Nova emits.

= Baptism =
Baptism is the exchange of Stigmata between a Pandora and a Limiter , thus , forming a bond between them and allowing them to use their respective abilities , with a Pandora being able to activate their "Pandora Mode" whilst a Limiter being able to Freeze , though there are exceptions , such as the heroine and hero of this story whom are able to perform these without a baptism ceremony.

= Stigmata =
Their essentially jewel-like objects that grows on the back of a Pandora ( and maybe the Limiters as well ) .
The better it's growth and the more Stigmata a Pandora have , the better their at in using their abilities and if possible , perform more advanced skills in combat.
Still , a synchronization with one's Stigamata and one's talent in the matter is to be considered.

= Nova =
Foreign lifeforms which poses a threat against humanity.
They seem to hold a certain level of intelligence and poses a great threat even to the Pandoras whom were originally trained to deal with them.

= Main Character Sypnosis =

= Kazuya Aoi =
The male Protaginist of the tale.
Kazuya is a freshman in the academy but despite that , he have exceptional skills as a Limiter but have problems using it outside critical situations.
Regardless , like his sister , both of them bears a distinct and unnatural talent in their own respective fields.

= Personality =
Well , Kazuya is pretty much the typical Shonen Protaginist you'd find in most Anime.
Don't like seeing the one he cares for get hurt , somewhat devoted to the heroine but his slightly more expressive about his affection and tries to help others even if he gets hurt.
Still , his a bit less annoying than a typical Shonen protaginist seeing his fairly devoted towards Satellizer and is taking some initiatives to get to know the heroine.

= Satellizer el Bridget =
The female heroine of the tale.
Satellizer was dubbed as the "Untouchable Queen" due to her harsh and cold nature , particularly towards those who had touched her and is in fact one of the strongest Second Year Pandora students.
However , she is actually 17 years old despite being in Second Year as she was retained sometime ago.
Strangely enough , she doesn't mind Kazuya touching her the two hitted off well from the start.
She is also fond of burgers.

= Personality =
Her harsh and stubborn personality mainly derives from her past , which she dreads and fear , resulting in an intense fear of being touched by others.
Deep down , she is actually surprisingly feminine , though when she snaps , she is more than willing to hurt others , particularly if she was touched. Note that she can be extremely cute at times as well.
She refuses to form a Baptism with Aoi out of embarassment but she does seem extremely attached to him.

= Story Overview =
Generally speaking , I daresay I am very , very surprised.
I was expecting it to be a typical "Fan Service Manga which happens to have action content" and boy , was I wrong.
It was the other way round.
This is a Manga with "Action content and it just happens to have fan service as a sub-genre , along with a pretty interesting storyline to boot".
The concept and storyline progression may not certainly be the top-notch , but the dark and heavy atmosphere along with the unique heroines kinda get your interest rolling for a very , very long time.

Still , the more unique characters tend to be female. For some reason , a majority of the males in this Manga are nothing more than a boring bunch of lovers who are falling head over heels for their Pandoras.... and that goes for the Protaginist as well.
The female characters have tragic pasts , a reason and a motive between their battles and the reason why they are shaped to be the person they are now , whilst the male characters appears to be nothing more but a bunch of boring side-kicks.

*Slams head on table*
Well , other than the fact that all of the girls in the Manga gets pretty scary when they lose it and the fact that the male characters appear to be as insignificant as the grass growing out of the soil just outside my house , I don't really have much to complain about the characters.

Still , what captivates the readers isn't the romance side of things , but the urge to know what happens next , the intensity that seems to grip upon you and the heavy and dark feeling one feels when reading this Manga.
What captivated me wasn't the fan service nor was it exactly the concept , but the suspense and thrill one feels when reading the chapters , page by page.

So , what more can I say?

Graphics

= Artwork Review =
For those who had been solely watching the Anime all this time may be slightly disoriented by the difference in the artwork scheme.

However , the Mangaka had done a pretty good job in bringing out how disturbing this Manga actually is by well... drawing some scenes as disturbingly as he can.
Still , it's not as though there's as much gore as in other infamous titles like Elfen Lied , the thing is , what really disturbs me the most is the facial expression of the characters.

Yes , from a sweet charming smile to a face that literally says "You'r screwed" may sound like something easy to draw but this artist's flexibility and skill in handling this concept is... disturbing :o

Not to mention that the artist doesn't seem to mind getting the heroines pummeled as badly as possible... Geez.

As for the battle scenes , I daresay despite the messy first impression it may offer upon a glance , one can safely say that they know exactly what is going on in every scene without a hitch , so you won't sit there and wonder why is there an arm at that spot when it's not supposed to be there.

As for fan service , sorry to disappoint the perverts out there but they tend NOT to overdo things.
Sure , clothes do get ripped once in a while , but it's not as though their made out of butter and the entirety of the clothes simply melts off the heroine as the battle goes on like in other titles , but I dare say they do offer some actual fan service once in a while.

= This is a Review of Freezing ( Manga ) =

... I must admit I was pretty surprised.
I was seriously under the impression it's going to be something that's solely about fan services , seeing that the Anime adaptation had convinced me of it , but it seems that the Manga was slightly different in the sense that it prioritizes it's heroines' background , the battle scenes and the suspense it occasionally offers.
Ecchi is but a sub-genre and is hardly the motivation of why the readers would want to read the Manga , seeing that actual fan services doesn't really come by too often , but the morality issues and dark atmosphere surrounding this story would get you hooked on like a fish.

= Overall : Others =

= Age Recommendation : 16-18 +

= Genre : Action / Romance ( Very light ) / Seinen

= Action =
One of the key factors of this Anime , perhaps?
Intensive as the combat are , it tends to end up with Satellizer winning the battle all of the time.
Still , despite that , one can certainly feel the thrill and impact of the battles , particularly when Satellizer gets pummeled into the soil when she appears to be at a clear disadvantage.
But one way or the other , it's like a typical Shonen Manga or something - When your losing , there's always a way to get more power.
For a Seinen Manga , it feels remarkably Shonen-like in the Action genre :P ( Especially with all the moves being named and what not )

= Romance =
Well , I can't say the romance is something of which neither gender might find exceptionally appealing , but for a Manga meant for males , Aoi isn't really all too indecisive like most male leads and Satellizer is just... unbearably cute at times.
Still , I'm not too sure whether to label her as Tsundere or not , for one , she hardly ever goes Tsun on the protaginist and is practically DereDere over him :o
Either way , it's something that exists and yet lacks a distinct and powerful existence within the storyline , but is critical as it somewhat lightens the mood in the Manga and does indeed play a role in the plotline once in a while.

= Trivia =
- Common knowledge , but there is a 12 Episodes Anime based on the series.
- It's liscenced by Funimation..... *cough*
- Freezing was created by a Korean Manhwa artist , but Freezing was released in Japan and in Manga-reading style.
- There are radio shows on it , if your a fan of the series , you might want to check it out on Youtube
