DURARARA!!

DURARARA!! tv,manga Review

In Tokyo's downtown district of Ikebukuro, amidst many strange rumors and warnings of anonymous gangs and dangerous occupants, one urban legend stands out above the rest – the existence of a headless “Black Rider” who is said to be seen driving a jet-black motorcycle through the city streets.

Ryuugamine Mikado has always longed for the excitement of the city life, and an invitation from a childhood friend convinces him to move to Tokyo. Witnessing the Black Rider on his first day in the city, his wishes already seem to have been granted. But as supernatural events begin to occur, ordinary citizens like himself, along with Ikebukuro's most colorful inhabitants, are mixed up in the commotion breaking out in their city.

Story & Playability

Ryugamine Mikado decides to move into Tokyo - Ikebukuro from his hometown. His childhood friend, Kida Masaomi lives there already and he persuaded Mikado to move into the city. At first Mikado wants to go home but Ikebukuro has its own mysteries which make Mikado curious and excited.
One of those are about a black bike and its headless rider, Celty, who's a dullahan, an Irish ghost, who lost her head.
The other mystery is the case of the colour gangs. A few years ago two gangs fought until they wiped each-other out nearly completely. Since their disappearence a new, colourless group occupied the city: they are the Dollars, whom have no colour and nobody knows who the members are.
Masaomi warns Mikado about the people he should avoid in Ikebukuro: Kadota and his friends...the unbelievingly strong Heiwajima Shizuo and the Russian black Simon... and the mercurial and cruel Orihaya Izaya, Shizuo's archenemy.
But thanks to Mikado's bad luck (or luck) he soon meets every one of them and starts to find out the truth behind the mysteries, and gets caught up in the gathering storm.

Durarara!! is actually a novel series which is made by Yasuda Suzuhito and Narita Ryohgo and runs in G Fantasy since 2004. The anime version was released from 2010, January till June, and it's either one of the most craziest or most genius things I've ever seen and read. I can't decide. I can only say it's good. Its humour, the story, the strange mythological background choice and the characters who are all insane in a way or two, and you can bet that every one of them has a secret.

A little about the main characters:

Spoiler (show)

Ryugamine Mikado - Mikado is shy and introverted, the complete opposite of Masaomi who is very friendly and social. He has a crush on Sonohara Anri but doesn't know how to aproach her. Of course, as everybody else, he has a secret, too. Or... mabye more. ;)

Kida Masaomi - He is the class idol type, the cool guy only with lame jokes and bad tactics for picking up women. Although he warns Mikado about a lot of people in Ikebukuro he knows every one of them personally and is good friends with some of them. His past is already dark despite his age.

Sonohara Anri - She is the classmate of Mikado and the friend of the two boys. She is as shy as Mikado and her past is as dark as Masaomi's.

Celty Sturluson - She is a dullahan whose head was stolen 20 years ago. She came to Ikebukuro to find it and lives together with Kishitani Shinra and is actually in love with him.

Orihara Izaya - He is in a way the main bad guy of the story. In many other ways, he isn't. He says he loves people so he wants to see their every reaction. For this, he puts them into miserable and bad conditons, watches their behaviors and laughes insanely. Izaya is purely insane and yet, is one of the two most loved characters of the story.

Graphics

The art is an interesting theme. In the mnaga or even the anime... it's unique. Not the kind one would call pretty or beautiful. This time we stand before a case where the anime art is better than the actual manga art. Not something usual.
But I like the art. It suits the manga and the anime perfectly, I think. It's flexible. It can be creepy or cute depending on the situation, which is a good point.
Oh! And Ikebukuro is very detailed. After all, the city itself is a character, too.

There are some cameo appearances in the story: another GFantasy stories or characters from the authors.

Sound

I'm in love with the opening and ending songs. They are perfect.
Background music is another case. There's a very annoying background theme which is played at very bad scenes sometimes. In spite of that, the battle background music or the backgroundmusic any other time is good.

Fun

Durarara!! is good. That's the simpliest way to define it. It has a good story, good characters and good footing. My opinion can seem a bit biased but nowadays when so many overrated anime and manga are published and aired the popularity of Durarara!! is strictly based on its story and not the nearly non-existing fanservice it contains (some naked breasts here and there and those who are into BL will love Shizuo's and Izaya's hate-complex relationship). A lot of stories rely on the elements that would attract the audience and don't have an actual story or real character development. Durarara!! doesn't. And this is why I love it and can recommend for anyone who's up for action, twisted love and evil shenanigans.

You're right about fun. The characters are really nice. Shizuo is the best one.

I've only watched the anime, so I don't have that much of a problem with the art. It was indeed slightly peculiar at the start, but I got used to it soon. And I absolutely agree with you about the opening and ending songs! I'm in love with them. This is really one of the few series that I've come across lately that's worthy of the words creative and good. :)

I ve only started watching the anime because i found sooo much fanart and fanfiction based on izaya and shizuo s relationship they kinda awakened the fangirl in me; putting this aside the story is BLOODY BRILIANT, the story has a nice ''atmosphere' ikebukuro really feels warm and alive
