Seto no Hanayome

Seto no Hanayome tv Review

Nagasumi Michishio is your average 14-year old schoolboy who was dragged along by his parents on a summer vacation to the remote inland mountain beach of Seto. When he and his parents reach the beach, bad luck strikes and he gets washed away to sea. On the brink of death, Nagasumi is saved by a girl.

However, bad luck seems to be Nagasumi's brother-in-fate; he discovers that the girl who saved him, Sun Seto, is actually a mermaid. To top it off, she is also the only daughter of Gouzaburou Seto, boss of the Seto Group, a Yakuza-like organization that has a grimly rule: any human who discovers the merfolk's existence must be killed, or the said merperson would be killed instead.

But there's another solution: the only way for Nagasumi and San to escape this rule is to get married!

Story & Characters

This is a Review of Seto no Hanayome :

Story Introduction :
One Summer , the Michishio Family decided to visit Nagasumi's grandmother. Spending much time as a family together , the family went to the Seto beach one day. However , Nagasumi got a cramped leg in the sea and no one saw him drowning , he submerged entirely into the water and sank lower and lower. Just when he thought he was a goner , someone who looked like a mermaid pulled him out of the water...

Terminology :

Mermaids :
Well , Mermaids are essentially...err...what you imagined them to be like :P However , most Mermaids are well , something like a Yakuza ( Yakuza means Mafia ) . Their structure and ways heavily resemble that of a Yakuza one way or the other and the problem is , any humans that is unrelated to the mermaids that found out about their existence is to be killed on the spot. Mermaid also have the ability to turn into human forms on land but younger mermaids will revert back to their mermaid form if their legs are exposed to water , since they can't control their ability to transform yet.

Character Sypnosis : ( Main Leads Only )

Michishio Nagasumi :
Michishio Nagasumi is the protoganist of the plot. As an average student , he got mixed with things that no regular humans would get to be involved in the very day he was saved by the mermaid when he was drowning ; he would have to marry her if he was to preserve his life due to the rules of the mermaid.

Personality :
Though being dumb at times ( Perhaps for a comical effect ) , having a weakness for whom ever had his first kiss ( ..*ahem* ) and slightly perverted , he have a strong sense of responsibility and is actually quite faithful to his wife.

Seto Sun :
Seto Sun is the female protoganist of the plot. As a mermaid and daughter of the head of the Seto Family , she saved Nagasumi and allowed him to live , going against the rules of the mermaid society. However , she took responsibility of his life and refused to have him executed by marrying him.

Personality :
She takes honor extremely seriously , often showing samurai-like traits ( Where are those cherry blossoms coming from..? ) and she takes the responsibility of being Nagasumi's wife extremely seriously. Though she is known to be slightly air-headed at times as well.

Edomae Lunar :
Edomae Lunar has known Sun ever since she was a child but resented her as she defeated her in every singing competetion held between their families back then. Due to this resentment , she rose to become a pop idol loved by many to show her ability to Seto Sun , but was even more infuriated when she realised Sun had a boyfriend.

Personality :
She takes on two personality , a "masK" which she acts as a innocent and cute loli when she's in public. However , in front of those she knows well , she reveals her true self , a bad tempered and some what ill-natured girl , often regarding Nagasumi as her slave or minion , but she isn't entirely bad either.

( Sorry , since the character sypnosis is much shorter compared to before )

Overall :
Well , storyline-wise , Seto no Hanayome isn't exactly that concrete. Having the characters end up in the most ridiculous of situations and having something serious coming out of it , it's certainly a fairly bad mix.
As for the story pattern , it moves in a single way but each couple of episodes is filled with various events.
For character development , well , other than Nagasumi himself ( and perhaps Sun ) , the characters don't have much of a serious improvement in their personality and traits.
However , the character's personality are generally well-done so their easily blended in from "comedic" to "story-line" based personalities without the viewers noticing much of a difference.
To put it bluntly , the story is weak , under-reinforced , cheesy and brittle. The events that led one to the next is so badly done that it's neglectable.
However , for a joke Anime to even have a storyline , I must pat the developers on the back for that.
( Honestly , I can't think of much to say for this sector )

Art

Artwork Review :
What...What is this strong temptation to give it a 10!!
Well , there are many reasons for that , the girls in this Anime are literally eye candy and will give you a nosebleed even if their not wearing anything skimpy. Seto Sun is like the combination of cute , hot and beautiful....makes you wonder if she was drawn by the hands of God itself :O ( Her hairstyle is unique as well )
As for Lunar , it's interesting to see how easily they easily changed her from the unbearable sweetness of moe to the...more savage and violent side of her.
Well , I'm pretty sure you have the general picture of it , if I have to put it so , the girls in this Anime are much cuter compared to that of K-On! in terms of artwork. ( And that's saying something since K-On! is moe themed )
As for the guys , well , other than Masa , no other guys look quite as bad as* in my opinion. In fact , a majority of the guys look fairly bland compared to the girls.
...Though i must admit that it's interesting to see Nagasumi being converted to various physical appearances for the comical purposes of this Anime. ( From dumb to muscular :O )
However , when Nagasumi is in his muscular mode , he his usually static and other than his mouth and eyes , he doesn't move much. It might be for comical effect or the probability that the artist have trouble animating him. This is to be taken into consideration.
For the environment , it's not EXTREMELY beautiful like in some other works I had seen but it's generally appealing to the eyes.
All in all , Seto no Hanayome is quite an eye candy.
Note that every character look extremely different and have a flavour of some sort of their own.
Oh yeah , before I forget , there is a certain episode where Sun starts dancing and well , let's just say it's fairly impressive :D

Sound

Music Review :
Surprisingly enough , Seto no Hanayome have excellent music in it's stock. Both the Opening , Ending and BGM themes are extremely appealling to the ears.
...and yeah , I don't have much to say for this sector but I assure you , your unlikely to get disappointed by it's music themes , though their generally moe-themed to be honest. But if you prefer the more "serious" voice types , there are songs like Your Gravitation and Asu he no Hikari , as well as Romantic Summer depending on how you view it.

List of Opening , Ending and BGM :

Romantic Summer ( Opening I )

Asu he no Hikari ( Ending I )

Dan Dan Dan ( Ending II )

Your Gravitation ( BGM , Sun's Song )

Lunarian ( BGM , Lunar's Song )

Seiyu Review :
Well , generally speaking , there are good Seiyus for most of the characters here but there are no paricularly prominent voices here.
Though I must admit that Lunar's Seiyu perfectly fitted into her personality , it's kinda startling to see how well she transformed from moe to dangerous :P
Takahiro Mizushima is the Seiyu for Nagasumi , he had taken on roles like Rolo from Code Geass and Romeo from Romeo x Juliet.
Haruko Momoi is the Seiyu for Sun and unsurprisingly , she is also a singer. She sang most of the songs in this Anime , though some songs are sang along Sakura Nogawa , who plays Lunar.
Note that though the artist is credited to "Sun and Lunar" , who are the Anime characters , the real singers are Haruko and Sakura , absorb that into your mind young ones!! :P

Presentation

This is a Review of Seto no Hanayome :
Romance / Comedy mix had never looked so good :D Cute girls , fresh jokes and repeating jokes that never seems to get old , Seto no Hanayome is a must-watch for any Romance-Comedy fans.
Like a typical Romance-Comedy Anime , storyline-wise , it's pretty weak and it's kinda strange to see how a non-serious event results in serious consequences at times but I dare say this Anime lives off it's artwork ( To be specific , the girls ) , comedic sequences and later on in the plot , the romance factor , which was actually very weak at first and can prove distasteful to romance fans since the romance involved here is more or less a form of responsibility with no emotions to it. But as I said , the romance factor grows stronger later so sit tight.

Overall ( Others ) :

Age Recommendation : 13 +

Genre : Comedy , Romance , Harem ( Extremely mild ) , Ecchi ( Extremely mild )

Romance :
Romantically-wise , this Anime is feeble , feeble and simply feeble at first. A true hardcore Romance fan would not thoroughly enjoy this Anime and in fact , at first , this Anime had shown hints of becoming a Harem. The romance would also prove distasteful since Sun and Nagasumi got together out of responsibility and circumstances , not love , regardless of how faithful they are to each other. However , things start to change very slightly as the plot progresses , perhaps not so satisfactory to typical Shoujo Anime fans but it's good enough for a Shounen romance fan.

Humor :
Humor-wise , there is often a mix of slight Ecchi and humor , as well as mild Yaoi jokes , though the Anime often have exaggerated joke sequences which is the main component of it's humor factor. Well , to put it into words , the Anime isn't exactly that cartoonish in it's humor nor is it overly Ecchi...hmm...I seriously need to expand my vocabulary skills :X
Anyway , to put things straight , the jokes are exaggerated , but there is a line to how exaggerated it is so it won't appear to be cartoonish or simply stupid , as for the Ecchi jokes , their more or less an impression or how it appears to be like but it isn't actually happening.

Psychological :
Well , despite what I said about the weak plotline , there are many times where the viewer would feel quite sorry for the characters in the Anime. Interestingly , the chances of you hating a character in this Anime is remotely low as well , even Sun's father is likeable , despite the fact that his trying everything he can to rid of Nagasumi :P However , I must say that the developers were fairly careless for trying to boot up a small humor sequence at the wrong scenes.

Trivia :
- This Anime was originated from a Manga
- There is an OVA for it , which I would review later if I managed to watch it.

Reviewer's Comments :
Well , so far , this is perhaps the best Romance-Comedy I seen yet ( Though my listing is minimal to be honest ) , it'll be your loss if you miss it :P

I really agree that the series didn't have a good plot or story.. But the jokes are funny enough to make me watch it over and over, just to have a laugh.. I really like how Nagasumi's face (and even appearance) sometimes change.. like his stupid face when he's whining, and his handsome face when he's trying to act cool! lol
Anyway, thanks for the review.. ^_^
