The World God Only Knows

The World God Only Knows manga Review

Story & Playability

This is a Review of The World God Only Knows / Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai :

Story Introduction :
Katsuragi Keima is an Otaku known in the net as the "Capturing God" due to his phenomenal ability to complete any games within a short amount of time and successfully complete a Dating Visual Novel , or also known as a Gal Game , extremely quickly and post information about it on the net. One day , he received a mail that which he finds fairly offending , as though the sender was challenging him. Without hestitation , he accpeted and a girl called Elsee appears before him , telling him he needs to capture the hearts of real girls in order to capture the spirits possessing them. Both Elsee and Keima have no choice in this matter as both of them would face the danger beheadment if they failed.

Terms Sypnosis :

Run-Away Spirits - Run-Away Spirits are mysterious beings that possess the gaps within a human's heart and to force them out , there are several methods but since Elsee is a newbie , she requires the aid of Keima to close the gap of the heart with love to force it out. However , as a price of forcing the Run-Away Spirit out , the girl in question would forget about Keima.

Capturing God - This is Keima's title in the Internet and he is a well-known net figure as he can capture any game girls without fail.

Demon / Devil - Strangely enough , demons aren't evil in this :O Their jobs are to capture Run-Away Spirits and Elsee is a Demon herself from Hell.

Character Sypnosis ( Early Main Leads ) :

Katsugari Keima :
In the net , he was worshipped as the Capturing God and the impact he posed in the Gal Game industry was heavy ( Though he was unaware of it ) but in reality , he was called otamegane ( Otaku + Megane ) and most students and teachers alike dislike him , but he wasn't bothered about it. He also plays video games in school and the teacher doesn't even bother about him any more ( Since he seems to have an unlimited supply of PSPs and he scores really well in the exams , ironically enough ) .This time , he have to capture real girls as he is forced to by the mail he agreed to.

Personality :
Keima is indifferent to the negative remarks and attitude the teachers and students are giving him , he even annoys the hell outta them without knowing so. However , despite his Otaku ways , he is extremely intelligent and due to the amount of Gal Games he played , his knowledge on charming girls is astonishingly effective when he needs to do so in order to fulfill a mission. Well , typically , he have an obsession with 2D girls and have little interest in the 3D world.

Elsee de Lute Irma :
Elsee is a newbie Demon assigned to Earth from Hell to capture Run-Away Spirits. Since she is incapable of capturing anything on her own , she soughted the aid of Keima , who was known as the "Capturing God" to help her fill the empty gap in the hearts of the girls to capture the Spirits that lie within it. Elsee later starts to live with Keima in his house after,,,saying a particular lie to his mother.

Personality :
Elsee is fairly air-headed and immature and you would never expect someone like her to be assigned from Hell to capture Spirits. Strangely enough , she enjoys sweeping , perhaps due to the fact that she had been a sweeper in Hell for YEARS. Elsee is also kindly towards her friends and she have an immeasurable respect for her partner , Keima , whom she calls by the title "Kami-sama" ( God ) all the time. ( Is she seriously a demon? )

Overall :
Well , generally so , the story can get very interesting at times but it moves at a VERY SLOW PACE. It takes VOLUMES of Mangas before the general plotline starts to budge but I must admit , the terms and concept of the Anime is unique , fresh and things can get pretty surprising at times.
The story also moves in a mini-arc manner , with every few episodes being a different girl's Arc of which Keima must capture their hearts. Surprisingly , the author does come up with new settings once in a while so the viewer would not get bored from the typical settings and situations all the time and since it moves in a mini-arc manner and since most Mangas are long winded , the viewers are unlikely to get bored from this one.
The characters are likeable and perhaps unique since we don't actually get to see an Otaku as the main lead all the time with a Demon girl who is so air-headed that makes you wonder whether she is even a demon at all. There are also different girls appearing per few Episodes as side-characters and their personalities are well-formed for a character that is supposed to play a temporary role in the plot.
As for plot twists , they happen occasionally when the Manga reverts to the general storyline but I won't get too much into it so I won't spoil the surprise.
Certainly , the author of this Anime had done his homework , I have played several Gal Games myself and I am astounded by how accurate the author described the settings of a Gal Game and there are very interesting and accurate trivia about them being referred to every few episodes.
Anyway , this is certainly a one-of-a-kind Manga which you certainly do not see everyday.

Graphics

Artwork Review :
The artwork , perhaps , is not the best but it's certainly within the borderlines of excellence and great.
Every few episodes , there would be very different girls appearing along with very different designs that would suit their personality and the first impression being implemented on the viewer is accurate , as a "sporty-looking girl" is indeed...very sport :P
Anyway , you have to seriously pat the artist on the back for being able to come up with artwork designs of different girls who shares almost no resemblance to each other per few Chapters.

Sound

...Hey , hey , hey!! Manga does not emit sound so a 5 is to be implemented to even the score.

Fun

This is a Review of The World God Only Knows / Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai :
This is a one-of-a-kind Manga that's for sure. Well , generally speaking , the storyline moves at a very slow pace , with the general concept budging with every couple of volumes but the mini-arcs per few Chapters is enough to keep the Manga fresh and entertaining. Well , I'm probably parroting what I said in the Story Section but each Arc is always a bit different from the previous one , or indeed , being so different that you'd be quite surprised by how things go at time.
Interestingly , each Arc have a slight moral lesson which can be learnt as well.
Well , all in all , this Anime is a fine mix of a unique concept , humor and certainly something you would enjoy more if you had played at least one Gal Game or two.

Overall ( Others ) :

Age Recommendation : All Ages

Genre : Romance ( Slight ) , Fantasy / Supernatural , Slice of Life , Comedy , Harem ( Slight )

Romance :
Well , the Romance to be expected isn't strong nor particularly romantic. It is Keima's job to make the girls fall in love with him in order to heal the wound in their hearts so romantically wise , it may not be too entertaining for females but it may prove somewhat entertaining for males as girls of various personalities appears per few Chapters , along with their problems and so forth.

Humor :
The Humor content is light but refreshing , you may need to watch quite a bit of Anime or play several Gal Games to get some of them but it's not particularly neccessary to do so since Parody content is minimal in this Manga.
Oh yeah , Keima is the central comedy character in the Anime.

Trivia :
- There is a Light Novel called The World God Only Knows : God and the Devil and the Angel but the storyline is different to the original.
- According to one of the Manga Chapters , an Anime is in development for it , hooray for Keima fans!!
