Gantz

Gantz tv Review

High school student Kei Kurono meets up with childhood friend Kato Masaru one day by chance encounter. As the two are in the subway chatting, Kato notices a homeless man on the subway train tracks. Kato goes down on to the tracks to move the man off the tracks and persuades Kei to help. But soon after helping the man, they are hit by a subway train and killed...

Or maybe not.

Immediately after being hit by the train, the two suddenly find themselves in an apartment from which they can't leave, along with some other people who were also in some near death experience. In this apartment there is also a black sphere called Gantz.

Kei and the others have to obey Gantz's rules if they want to live. They have to participate in missions in which the objective is to eliminate aliens. But who or what are these aliens? are Kei, Kato and the others alive or dead?

Story & Characters

The storyline for this anime is unique and holds a lot of potential. For those of you who like to start watching an anime without knowing anything about its plot, then you might want to skip off to the Art section. The bulk of the plot is people that died recently are given a second chance, but part of that second chance is they must fight these aliens. The story revolves around a perverted character named Kei Kurono and how he gets through all of these fights. Kei is joined by other characters stuck in the same situation he is.
In case you have not figured it out yet, a lot of things die in this anime, so if you don't like blood, this probably isn't the anime for you. The story is good if you are looking for something that's not the usual, however they cut it way short. This story has a lot more to tell but it got cut short probably because they decided to start the anime before the manga was even close to being finished, thus quickly caught up and you should know what happens next, as it happens to almost all the anime out there.
The characters are decently well developed, and we get to see all their mental problems associated with being put in a strange and messed up situation, which add greatly to the strength of the story.
The only major downfall of this story is that it is cut really short, such that the story seems only half told.

Art

The art is fine, nothing special about it. They do occasionally do the scenery in a 3D style and 'fly' through it to establish the setting, but it neither adds nor detracts from the anime. The character appearance often does not fit the characters personality, but it fits the story well, and it was done that way on purpose. There are no major things to detract from the artwork, but it isn't the most amazing thing in the world either. Overall the artwork matches this anime very well. They get an above average rating because it was evident that effort was put into the artwork, but putting in much more effort wouldn't have produced dramatically better results.

Sound

Again nothing special here. All the voices fit the characters, nobody had an annoying voice (the kind where you just want them to shut up every time they talk). The opening song is interesting and is worth listening to at least once. It uses a mix of Japanese and English in almost all of it's sentences, but wasn't bad. If I had to describe the sound I'd say weird hip hop. The ending song sounded like it would fit at the end of a romance anime, and as I look at the translated lyrics, it would do quite nicely in that role. The sound effects were appropriate and consistent with what was happening. so again an above average marking but not perfect.

Presentation

Presentation... where to begin... too many flashbacks, especially towards the end. They would begin every episode with what happened in the last episode to the point that I would think that I accidentally chose an episode I had already seen. Certain scenes used way too many stalling methods, like flashing between two people staring at each other both saying "uh" with a stupid look on their faces or glaring at each other. I guess they did that in a feeble attempt to build suspense. It didn't really work, just pisses me off. Now that I'm done bashing all the things I didn't like about the presentation, overall it was decent.
There wasn't anything really funny in this anime, it's a more serious anime, so it's not a good choice if you're looking for laughs. However if you're looking for something that allows you to see what the characters are thinking, and like the more serious style anime then this one is a good choice.
They didn't mess up the presentation as bad as other anime I have seen, so they still get an average score for this part.

Great review! I agree with you in everything, except I think Kishimoto voice is really annoying for me :P

If the anime played out like the manga, instead of cutting it off, the ending song "Last Kiss" by Bonnie Pink would've fit nicely. Also my assumption to the cut off was indeed, the anime caught up too fast before the mangaka had any time to add anything. But I applaud it with trying to give an original ending instead of sticking us with a thousand episodes of filler.

I enjoy the manga of this more so than the anime but the anime wasn't too bad. You gave a pretty decent review however, I have to disagree with you about the sound. I thought all the voice actors were well matched for each characters, especially Kato Masaru. The opening music is simply AMAZING, it's too bad I haven't heard anything else similar to it. The animation quality was okay but I guess that's to be expected of most anime (due to low budget I guess). If I never watched this series, and read your review, I think I'd give it a try. Maybe not immediately but I'd sure get around to it.

if anyone likes the anime or is curious about venturing further, check out the live action anime. this is one of those non mainstream anime, it's only known by those not afraid to venture into the unknown. I like the review, a sort of rough around the edges but it's still an idea to get people interested further into this anime.

Life after death theme sounds pretty cool and betting you and yours friends life on a series of missions to reclaim it sounds familiar.
