Oh yeah,I forgot to mention something. There is apparently an OVA for it.
Elfen Lied tv,manga Review
The Diclonius, a mutated homo sapien that is said to be selected by God and will eventually become the destruction of mankind, possesses two horns in their heads, and has a "sixth sense" which gives it telekinetic abilities. Due to this dangerous power, they have been captured and isolated in laboratories by the government. Lucy, a young and psychotic Diclonius, manages to break free of her confines and brutally murder most of the guards in the laboratory, only to get shot in the head as she makes her escape. She survives and manages to drift along to a beach, where two teenagers named Kouta and Yuka discovers her. Having lost her memories, she was named after the only thing that she can now say, "Nyuu," and the two allow her to stay at Kouta's home. However, it appears that the evil "Lucy" is not dead just yet...
Story & Playability
Right...I'm not a fan of gore and ecchi but I'll try to make my review as less biased as possible.
WARNING: THIS ANIME / MANGA IS NOT FOR THOSE UNDER THE AGE OF 18 DUE TO GRAPHICAL VIOLENCE AND MATURE CONTENT.
Either way,I almost puked after watching this.
Note that this is a combination review of both the Manga and the Anime.
I'll try to tune down my description of the gore scenes a little...
Terms Dictionary :
Diclonius - A new evolutinary race of Humanity. They looks exactly the same as humans except their physically enchanced
to a certain degree, their brain have a larger form of...err...whatever you call that part and they have two small
horns.Diclonius are able to use their "vectors" which are not unlike some kind of psychic hands that are not
visible to most humans. These "vectors" can easily go through solid objects and rip off flesh like butter. Most
Diclonius are brought to some Institute when young to be experimented and constrained as most Diclonius have a
"killing instinct towards humans".The Instinct seems to be somesort of conscience or voice in their heads or
probably some kind of psychological disorder.Strangely enough, most Disclonius are young women -_-
Disclonius also have an ability to spread a virus that will cause their race to be birthed from the infected.Diclonius
also need to concentrate in order to use their vectors so if their in pain they can be captured though it's unlikely to
catch a Diclonius off-guard easily.
Characters Overview :
Nyuu - The Alternate Ego of our main character. She is extremely immature and childish and tends to say "Nyuu!" and is pathetic in terms of speech as she lacks grammar and vocabulary skills. But she manage to learn more words afterwards. She gained this Alter Ego after being hitted in the head by a bullet. (The helmet saved her...a bit.) Whenever she got hit in the head extremely hard, she will revert back to her true self.
Lucy - The Main Character and also the alter ego of Nyuu.Lucy is a young Diclonius. Her "vector" have the range of about 2 Metres and it's still rapidly growing. She also holds great hatred towards humans due to her past. She also met Kohta a long time ago but something bad happened back then.
Kohta - A student who moved to the city of which the story takes part in to go to his new college. He later live in an abandoned Inn his Cousin arranged for him.His a generally good natured person who likes to help others at times. He also psychologically locked away his memories of the past due to the events that had took place and insists that his family was killed in a car crash.
Yuka - Cousin of Kohta.Yuka also secretly likes Kohta (Note that in Japan it is legal for cousins to marry each other but I'm not entirely sure about this yet.) and arranged an Inn for him to stay in.However, they later met Nyuu, which they named her after since she only said "Nyuu" , they took her to the Inn to stay in as she behaves like a child and seems to be lost. However, due to a certain sequence of...err...awkward events,Yuka got all jealous and decided to stay in the Inn to watch over Kohta. She also tends to punch Kohta when she got annoyed.
Mayu - A young girl who appears to be homeless and was later took in by Kohta out of sympathy.Either way,her family issues are simply horrible.
Nana / Number 7 - Well, she's pretty much Number 7 in the facility. She does not like to kill unlike most Diclonius so the facility used her to capture Lucy, who had escaped from the facility. She is somewhat immature to be honest.Despite her larger range of vector radius compared to Lucy, she lacks combat experience and from the looks of it,she's not as powerful as her.But she is determined to impress Kurama, the director of the facility and also whom she treats as her "father".
Nozomi - A young girl who have some pretty...embarassing issues.*Cough* Either way,she is extremely shy but holds a great talent for singing.
Kurama - His not exactly that bad but is forced to do certain things due to the circumstances.Kurama is actually,a good natured person despite being the director of this..horrible facility.Despite his somewhat cold attitude,he holds the lives of those around him dearly.
Bando - An elite Special Assault Team soldier but his also incredibly savage. He tried to kill Nyu but Nyu turned into her Lucy form and he pretty much lost his eyes and an arm. However,he went through a surgery to regain his sight and an artificial arm is determined for revenge. He seems to hold a soft spot for young girls despite saying "not wanting to be indebted to small little girls."
Mariko / Number 35 - The real daughter of the Director,Kurama. She is also influenced by the genes of the Diclonius to kill but she still love her father. Her abilities as a Diclonius is simply incredible and the container to hold her was said to be hardly holding her in.She is also extremely young, about the age of 5 I think.Either way,her vectors have the range of 11 Meters. The facility intends on using her to capture Lucy ( Or rather, kill.) by the form of threat.Your probably wondering how anyone would be able to threaten this God but they implanted bombs on her body at birth and she have dreams she want to fulfill so you get the idea.
Director Kakuzawa - Was he the real director?Ehh,I can't remember too well.Either way his also a Diclonius but he only have the horns, not the abilities. The bloodline of his family was from "cross-breeds" of humans and Diclonius so the abilities of the Diclonius was soon lost.Either way, this guy have some pretty sick ambitions.
Prof. Kakuzawa - A sensei of Kohta's school and also the son of the Director.Pretty much a insignificant worm in my opinion.Either way,his also a Diclonius but does not have any Diclonius abilities.
Kanae - Kohta's sister and she already died sometime ago.Due to spoiler reasons,I can't state her reason of death.
Kisaragi - Kurama's secretary. She's somewhat air headed and tends to trip alot but she holds high esteem of Kurama despite his coldness towards the other staff and disagrees when her colleagues called him "cold and uncaring (or something like that.) " However, she met up with a pretty terrible event straight off the bat on the first few episodes itself.
Arakawa - Prof. Kakuwaza's assistant. At first, she's pretty much a minor character but somewhere near the end,she plays a significant role.
Saito - A scientist of the facility and subsitute mother of Mariko when she was in her container. She never seen Mariko's face but communicates with her via the speaker.
Shirakawa - A female scientist that works along with Kurama.
Story Overall :
OK...this thing is just plain sick.Morally,visually...everything is sick. But it still have a pretty good plot and if you
seriously consider it,there are alot of moral values of humans in this and it pretty much shows the enviroment of the
society we'r living in (If you removed the so obviously fictional parts.) The plot itself is actually quite depressing
(Somewhere near the end.) but of course, sometimes you have no choice but to turn around at certain scenes due to the
intense gore.
Rating:
Graphics
Well...Art Review time.
Art Review :
Over-use of ecchi content that's for sure.Well,if you like to see ecchi stuff you probably won't mind but I don't like
it.Either way, there's plenty of gore in this so be warned. If you cannot stomach the Anime version I recommend the Manga
version, the gore is still there but since it's not Animated it's easier to watch.
Character Designs :
Well, the character changes clothes most of the time so I can't say much about it.
Rating:
Sound
Music Review :
Well, the music was decent I suppose.Hmm...I don't really have much to say for this. Edit : To beef up the Music Review a
bit,the Opening is called Illium which is pretty much a choir sort of music. The Ending Theme is Be Your Girl...I really
like this one though.
Voice Acting :
...Seems like I'm pretty much bland in this sector.I don't have anything to contradict.
Rating:
Fun
Again,I'll have to implement this warning.
WARNING : THIS ANIME / MANGA IS NOT SUITABLE FOR ALL AGES FOR IT CONTAINS MATURE CONTENT.
I won't feel so guilty if I did a warning twice and all...
Either way,I'll label this Manga / Anime under these genre.
-Horror (As in the gore.)
-Psychological
-Supernatural
-Romance
-Ecchi
-Harem(?)
-Tragedy
-Action
Time to continue the review and it's finishing touches.
Humor Content :
Well, the Anime contains only the main points,a different ending and a altered plot.So the Anime lacks humor. However, the
Manga have occasional humor content so it's worth taking a look at both sides. But I don't recommend the Anime version if
your unable to take too much gore, the Manga version is easier to digest to be honest.
Trivial Info :
-Elfen Lied is actually named after a song of some type. It's even mentioned in the Manga.
-Again,this isn't for the faint hearted. If you have poor constituion, don't even bother about watching the Manga
version
-The Anime is ONLY 13 Episodes...geez.The Manga on the other hand is a whooping 100 + Episode. (Well, for those with
limited time like me,it's gonna take forever.)
-There are many crucial differences in the Anime and Manga so,again, take a look at both of them if your able to take
it.
-The Manga is...have alot of ecchi content compared to the Anime.
-Oh yeah, just in case your wondering what is the extent of the gore...beheading,broken limbs,disembowlment...you get the
idea.So stay away if your unable to take it.
WARNING: I won't feel comfortable if I don't past warnings all over....THIS ANIME / MANGA IS ONLY SUITABLE FOR THOSE
AGED 18 OR OLDER.FOR THOSE WHO ARE UNDER-AGED,DO NOT VIEW THIS ANIME / MANGA'S CONTENT.Well,if your weak hearted,I
suggest you bring some pillows around you so you can faint in a safe manner or grab a bucket to puke in :P

You know, i kept thinking I would look in to this because I was curious about the plot, but I don't handle gore as well as I used to. I think I'll take your advise and stay away from this one <_<

@ ArtificialRaindrop
The plot is rather interesting so I guess you could find some one to tell the whole plot to you or something.Either way,try out the Manga first,if you can't even stand the Manga don't bother watching any further.I grew light headed for about most of the episodes XD -
