Seven Masters, Seven Servants. Only one can correspond to the Holy Grail

In the legend, the Holy Grail is an artifact that can make your wishes come true, in order to summon the Holy Grail, a ceremonial is required. The seven Masters chosen by the Holy Grail will be granted the seven Servants chosen by the Holy Grail: Saber, Lancer, Archer, Rider, Caster, Assassin, and Berserker. The Master must prove him/herself that he or she is the only one qualified to use the Holy Grail. In other words, he or she must defeat all the other Masters to prove him/herself.

Shiro Emiya lost his parents in a fire when he was young, and was adopted by a magician, even though he denied teaching Shiro magic, the un-talented Shiro still master a little. When the magician died, Shiro remained a worthless magician. Entangled with the "War of the Holy Grail" by accident, Shiro was granted the Servant "Saber" and was chosen to be one of the seven Masters.

Story & Characters

A review of Fate/Stay Night...24 Episodes and I have to admit,one of my favourites.This is loosely based of the legend of King Arthur,Exalibur and the Holy Grail.But everything is changed...Either way,this is a bitter-sweet storyline. (Note that I occasionaly brush up this review a bit since I probably forgotten about a thing or two so check back regularly)

Terms Dictionary:

Holy Grail War - This is a war between Servants and their Masters to obtain the Holy Grail,which is said to grant the wishes and desires of the winner of the war.The war happens every decade and only one Master and the Servant would be able to use it.However,the Holy Grail War is not as all as it is seen...

Rules of the War - The Rules are simple,annhilate all the current Servants and the remaning Servant and his/her Master will obtain the Holy Grail.All outsiders who seen or knew any of this have to be silenced.Killing of the Masters is not necessary but it's easier since the Masters are more vulnerable.Once the Holy Grail is obtained,the Servant usually vanishes.After a Servant finishes the Holy War,they cannot do it again,which means the chance for heroes to participate is rotating through out the years.They,however,always come under the names Archer ( For bow users but there are exceptions) , Caster , Sabre etc. etc. But they also have their true names.

Holy Grail - A mysterious object that,depending on the user,would be a destructive force or a great tool of heroic deeds.But then again,is that the case? ( Well,I guess I can't help hinting a bit ) It is also a rule that no human should know of this matter and any human who knows this ought to be silenced.Usually,there are only 7 Servants and their Masters taking part.

Masters - Masters are Magicians / Mages that summoned their Servants.Most Magicians need to be adept in magic and needs knowledge of this event in order to summon their Servants.However,if the magician is an amateur,they can use a "medium".It would usually be an object of great significance to the Servant.Masters also have Command Spells which they can force their Servants to do things against their will but there is a limited amount of times of which they can do it.Masters may support their Servants in combat but if the Master dies,the Servant,too,shall die.

Servants - They are summoned by Magicians for the Holy Grail War. Their adept in combat and are spiritual beings.They will,however,die when the war is over.However,it is said that by drinking from the Holy Grail would grant them a second chance in life (However...well check out the Anime either way) . It is also said that Servants would have the identical personalities of the Masters that summoned them. Which means a Magician who is honorouble would summon a similar Servant who are bent towards noble deeds.Their previous lives were usually heroes.

Command Spells - They are like tattoos on the master or objects.Depending on how many signs there are,the number of uses would be limited.It would cause the Servants to do things against their will,however.

Noble Phantasm - These are weapons that are like the mark of a certain Hero.Each weapon have a special attack or something like that.

Mana - This is a combination of a life-force of a living being and whether they can execute magic or special attacks with it.If it is drained,for humans,they will go into coma.For Servants,they will disappear.Humans can be saved by magicians but Servants require either hunting the mana of humans to survive or the master supplying mana to the Servants.

Magicians / Magus - They have the potential to become Masters. All Magicians have a "Magic-Circuit" of some sort. They are also capable of casting spells and what not.The parent,who is a magician,have the responsibility to pass their "Magic Mark" onto their descendant and so forth.However,not all Magicians have a Magic Lineage (Which means their family were all Magicians) and it is not only limited to Magicians to Summon Servants.

Magic Mark : The mark of a Magician.This allows them to cast spells.

Character Overview:

Shiro Emiya - A good natured high schooler.He always places others before him and enjoys helping people (To the extreme) .However,this tends to cause him to be used by others or get him into life-threatening situations.He accidently summons Saber one day as he is getting attacked.He later starts developing feelings towards her.He also have the ability to fortify objects and create objects from thin air.Later,he managed to re-create Excalibur for Saber,though it is said that his duplication is not as good as the original but it is not to be looked down upon.This spell is apparently called the Tracing Magic.However,his incapable of any other forms of spells.His not a very good magician since he isn't the birth son of his father.He later tries to pick up the skills of swordsmanship after Saber suggested it.He have short spiky orange hair.

Saber - A female swordsman.Her weapon,at first,is transparent.She is also very loyal but she also constraints her emotions.She also dislike Shiro's self-sacrificing attitude.When she is not in combat,she wears a plain dress.When in combat,she wears royal clothes that is being mixed with a Plate Armour with some side protections.She opens up slowly through out the storyline and also develops feelings towards Shiro.She is also King Arthur in her previous life but apparently,many things went against her will in the past.Apparently,she holds great charisma and elegance that entranced Shiro when he first met her.Her Noble Phantasm is the Excalibur but apparently there is another weapon...Her hair is blonde and is tied up...whatever you call that hairdo.She is also determined to fulfil her role as a King and she doesn't seem to find her gender important. (Well,Shiro accidently saw her in the baths once but she hardly reacted...Shiro on the other hand got all twitchy.Well,to fully get the joke,just watch it.) Despite the fact that she said that her gender isn't important,she becomes embarassed when she gets too close to Shiro at the later part of the plot and she even grows jealous at times (For example,Illya was once found sleeping on Shiro's bed and she got annoyed)

Rin Tosaka - An excellent and idol student in the school.However,she doesn't communicate despite being a popular student.However,she is in fact,a magician.She later summoned Archer.However,seeing that Shiro is an amateur and a lousy magician,she decided to help him out.She have several spells in her arsenal,along with Jewels which can cause intense damage (Or healing) and a dagger (Which appears much later).Apparently,she is emotionally scarred.She also tends to cast "Ganddr" of which she materialises a black sphere on the tip of her index finger to fire at a potential target.Depending on how much power is placed on it,it will cause the effects of sickness on the hitted target or it could also destroy stone. ( Note: For some reason,her spells are usually in the tongue of German. ) Her hair is dark and tied in ponytails but the hair is so long that it hardly matters.

Archer - A Servant that Rin summoned.His sarcastic and cynical and dislikes Shiro and often contradicting him for his foolish ideals.However,despite that,he hinted that his power lies in making his visions into reality,which caused Shiro to realise that he have the ability to create objects from thin air,just like Archer.Archer,despite his name,uses dual swords rather than a bow.However,his a pretty good swordman.His also extremely loyal to Rin.He have a white hair.His Noble Phantasm results in a barren land that is filled with nothing but swords.Of which his power his greatly increased.He also lost his memory due to the incomplete summoning but his abilities are not hampered.He can see things at a great distance with ridiculous precision.

Illyasviel von Einzbern - Gah,the horribly long name! Either way,she's a rich girl from distant lands (Apparently it's snowing there) that had came to Japan to participate in the War.However,she is very young.She also lives in a Mansion deep in the forest accompanied by two maids.She is also a Magician.She is also quite pale and have pure white hair.She is also very cruel for some one that young.She likes to be called Illya instead.

Berserker - Servant of Illya.He is a giant with eyes of different color and long black hair.He also wields a gigantic sword.His also incredibly powerful and caused great trouble to Saber and the rest.Berserker's past life was Heracles and thus,his Noble Phantasm, "Godhand" , allows him to have 12 Lives.He also tends to groan and roar but he is capable of speech,only at the very end did he truly talk.

Sakura Mato - A underclassman of Shiro.She took care of him 1 year ago since he was injured but for some reason she continued going to his house afterwards,taking care of the chores and food since Shiro lives lone in a rather big house.She too,will play a critical role.Apparently she likes Shiro as well but she never actually said anything about it but she was upset when Saber and Rin decided to go to school with him out of the blue.She have violet hair.

Shinji Mato - Sakura's brother.He has a crush on Rin but Rin,naturally,pushed it away (coldly) .Shinji,being a overly-proud type of person,became irritable and starts to flirt around.His family was a family of Magicians but the Magic Lineage grew weaker through out the years.Some how he was able to summon Rider and he uses this for an evil intent... (Note:He is also a friend of Shiro in the past)

Rider - Servant of Shinji Mato.She wears a mask that hides her eyes.She is also very loyal to her Master (Sheesh...their all so bleedin' loyal) and protects him from harm.Her weapon are dual daggers that are linked together with chains.Her Noble Phantasm allows her to cast a "Magic-like" ability that sends a blast towards the enemy.She later also summoned a Mythical beast.She was Medusa in her past life.She also specialise in stealth or climbing related sorts of combat.Her power is weak so she uses tactics to her advantage.

Kirei Kotomine - A Father of a Church. However,he plays a critical role in the war as he protects Masters who have surrendered.He was also the teacher of Rin and her father.Rin said that she dislikes him as well...Is the appearance that simple? ( Another hint )

Lancer - The one who assaulted Shiro at first.However,he was driven off by Saber after Shiro Summoned her (Against his knowledge and will :P ) His Noble Phantasm will aim towards the enemy's heart and cause the wound to heal through natural means.He uses a spear like his name.His previous life was Cuchulainn.

Kiritsugu Emiya - Foster father of Shiro.Little is known about him but as the story progresses,his importance widens. (But not as in the sense that he plays a critical role in the current plot.) He died some time after he adopted Shiro but he imparted his dreams onto Shiro.He said that he wanted to be the "Hero/Champion of Justice" and to protect others.He also said that he was a Magician but he also taught Shiro that magic is not something to show to others.

Taiga Fujimura - A sensei in Shiro's school.She have a hyperactive attitude and visits Shiro often along with Sakura.She is also widely called "Tiger" by the students (She over-reacts to it) .

Gilgamesh - AKA Archer ( Of the 4th Holy Grail War ) He wears a large set of golden plated armour. He confuses others about his identity since his able to use a large variety of weapons and none revealed his Noble Phantasm with the exception of Ea. Apparently he is the King of Heroes and he loves,or rather,desires Sabre.For some reason,he is the 8th Servant of this 5th War...there are many secrets in place.

Soichiro Kuzuji - A teacher who wear..glasses.Either way,there's something about him that I can't reveal :P

Caster - A Servant with magical powers.She lived in the Ryudo family's temple with the excuse of finding a place to stay in before her marriage but she is in fact,gathering mana/souls with a evil plot at hand. She was Medea in her previous life. ( With all these Mythological names,I learnt alot :P )

Assasin - A Servant who uses the arts of a samurai.He wears the hakama and kimono that is violet in color. However,his identity is nothing but a lie yet not so much of a lie... (Again,to know what I mean,watch the Anime!) His swordplay is also excellent and his Noble Phantasm allows him to slice 3 times about the same time. But apparently...his having trouble with the third slash XD But it's probably due to the fact that he can only use it on a flat platform.

Leysritt & Sella - I can't remember if their named in the Anime or not...either way,their the two maids of Illya.

Ayako Mitsuzuri - She is part of the Archery Club. Her mana is later being consumed by Rider but is revived by Rin later.

Issei Ryudo - Hmm,his part of the Student Council (Is he the President?I forgot :P ) Either way,he is a good friend of Shiro and often asks for his help if any mechanical device broke down. (Shiro,to others who have no idea about magic,is superb at repairing machines)

Overall :

The idea of the entire Anime is pretty good. The ending is bitter-sweet as well.Either way,this is one heck of an Anime,it would be a shame to miss it.Oh yeah...

Kiritsugu Emiya (As of the 4th War) : A somewhat cynical figure.His a cold blooded killer of magicians and uses strategies to exploit the enemy's weaknesses.He was the Master of Saber (Saber re-appeared in the 5th War as well)

Kirei Kotomine : Master of Assasin. He also harbours a strong hatred against Kiritsugu.

Tokiomi Tosaka : Father of Rin and...Sakura Master of Archer.He is also arrogant.He also took Kotomine in as his pupil and sees great potential within him.

Aoi Tosaka : Mother of Rin and...Sakura...She's also the childhood friend of Kariya Mato.

Ryunosuke Uryu : Master of Caster who summoned Caster by using the blood of his victims as a catalyst. A truly cruel figure who does not care about the war but rather,the killings it involved.

Maiya Hisau : Partner of Kiritsugu.She uses a Steyr AUG.She have a pretty hollow and cold attitude as well.

Waver Velvet : A some what arrogant figure who used a stolen Artifact to summon Rider.

Kariya Mato : Uncle of Shinji Mato.

Kayneth : Master of Lancer,a royal from the Magician Association.His artifact was stolen by Waver so he lost a medium to summon Lancer but he still managed it in the end.

Sola Ui : A cold hearted woman who married Kayneth out of a plot rather than love.

Saber (As of the 4th War) :She is also known as Arturia Pendragon,the King of Knights,King Arthur,King of Britain (Well,I know it's England but they say Britain) and whatever terms you have for her. She is the same Saber as of the 5th War.

Archer (As of the 4th War): He is Gilgamesh.He have a strong sense of pride and arrogance even back then.He also dislikes the presence of the other Kings (Saber and Rider)

Lancer (As of the 4th War) : Oddly enough he have two Noble Phantasms, Gae Buidhe and Gae Dearg.He abides by the morality of a Knight and is very loyal to his master.

Rider (As of the 4th War): His previous life is Iskander,King of Conquerers. He have several Phantasms and I'm surprised his not a Berserker Class.

Caster (As of the4th War): His previous life was Bluebeard.He is incredibly cruel and cold blooded and loves to torture his enemies before killing them.He finds an interest in Saber since he mistaken her for Jeanne D'Arc.

Berserker (As of the 4th War): Lancelot of the Lake,or Black Knight,have the ability to use most objects to be used as a Noble Phantasm.His crazy in combat so...it's no wonder Rider didn't get a chance to be Berserker

Assasin (As ofthe 4th War): Also known as the True Assasin. His composed of several entities and is a incredibly dangerous entity.

(Note: In Fate/Zero there are characters from Fate/Stay Night as well but they appear as children or insignificant characters)

Fate/Hollow Ataraxia :

Bazett : Original master of Lancer (Of the 5th War)and is sent by the Mage Association to fight in the Holy Grail War.However,she was betrayed and Lancer's ownership was converted.She then became master of Avenger.

Caren : A priestess of a Church.She is good natured but enjoys teasing others as well.She also have strange supernatural abilities (Exorcism)

Avenger : The mysterious 8th Servant who was summoned out of dumb luck in the 3rd War.His previous life was Angra Mainyu.

Shiro Emiya : In this side-plot,Shiro is possesed by Avenger but he regains his conscience occasionaly.However,he finds a change in his body and memory.

Rin Tosaka : ....Either way,in the first part of the plot,she is in London but returns with a...disturbing change in her attitude and nature.She also became a full-fledged sorceress when she came back and gave Shiro advice on how to break the Time Loop that is happening in the plot.Either way...she have a sudden liking of Cosplaying...She is also able to use the Kaleidostick to turn into Kaleido Ruby...this is turning into a Shounen that's for sure...

(With the exception of Kotomine,the characters of the 5th War appear again)

Art Review:
Meh,I hate to say this but I don't have anything to contradict about the art...again.Either way,the artwork is excellent. (As expected from a 24 Episode Anime ) I have to say I like Saber's design.A combination of royal clothings and armour.But her non-combat clothes are a weeny bit too plain.I don't really like the design of Shiro but I don't hate it either :P Either way,the rest of the characters are well designed.

Music Review:
Hmm,I don't dislike the Openings and Ending themes but I can't say I love them either.But the music they put into specific scenes heightened the mood a little so points are flowing on for that :D

Voice Review:
Nothing to contradict about the voices to be honest.In fact,you can sense a bit of pride in Sabre's voice actor which fits her personality really well.Hmm...I wonder what else can I write for the Sound and Art reviews,those who are watching this review,give me suggestions to improve my reviews as well :D Thanks in advanced.

Presentation

Humor:
There...is humor content involved.But in the later part of the plot,the humor content is usually interfered by serious "stuff" the next second which kinda hampers the mood :P

Overall:
This Anime is quite enjoyable to be honest.The combat scenes might be some what short but their well drawn one way or the other. (I always get stuck at writing the Presentation since I written everything else in Story,Sound & Art T_T ) Either way,it's going to be troublesome to follow the entire plot of the series since...well read the Trivia section...

Trivia:
-Fate/Stay Night (Anime) was adapted from the Adult Visual Novel version which is being cut into several phases.The Anime version is a highly compressed version of the visual novel.HOWEVER.The ending would be different if you received the best ending or rather,the True Ending.Let's just say that the True Ending,after playing all three phases,is a happily ever after.
-Fate/hollow Ataraxia is the sequel to the Fate/Stay Night Visual Novel.It's not exactly a sequel since Time is involved.It's more or less a side-story.Either way,the heroes find themselves in a 4 days loop continuation and their desperate to break out or something like that.Unfortunately,it's an adult visual novel so kids,stay away from it :p
-Fate/Zero,a prequel explaining the past with Kiritsugu Emiya as the main character.The events takes palce 10 years before the original events of Fate/Stay Night.Oh yeah,note that this is a Light Novel so bookworms out there,rejoice.
-Fate/Tiger Colosseum is a 3D fighting game (Unfortunately,only in Japanese).All the characters are chibi so...fans,beware XD
-Fate/Unlimited Codes is another fighting game but without the chibi-ness and all.
-Most of the above are restrained to Japan so..this is the reason why I said the prequel and sequel are hard to get.Take note that Tiger Colosseum and Unlimited Codes play no role in continuing the storyline.
EDIT: I forgot to mention something. The three phases of the Fate Stay Night visual novel is totally unrelated.Their like the different routes of the game. The Anime is based off the Fate route. The other two are named Unlimited Blade Works,where Archer survives and Rin and Shirou grows closer. In Heaven's Feel,this is where you see Dark Sakura and Dark Saber and where Sakura and Shirou grows closer. However,the Secret Ending is based off the Fate Route so it's safe to assume that Fate is the main story plot. The Anime,like I said,is based off Fate but there is a bit of content from the Unlimited Blade Work and Heaven's Feel as well. However,they didn't show the Secret Ending in the Anime so...grab the Visual Novel or watch a video of it.
Update:
-There is an upcoming RPG game for it called Fate/Extra which is apparently a dungeon crawler/RPG game.Either way,keep your fingers crossed and wish that it isn't a Japan only game.

-Shiro and Archer's ability to create weapons is called the Reality Marble.The weapons created by it cannot reach it's full potential as the original but it's power should not be underestimated.

-Archer was a Magi in his previous life,he does not have any Noble Phantasm weapon but he says if you must insist,the Reality Marble is then his Noble Phantasm.

-There is a bonus special Manga made for the series called Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya which shows an alternate world which shows Illya as the main character.

-A more...detailed description of the Arcs of the Original Visual Novel.
Fate : This is similar to the Anime and Manga version of which Shiro and Saber grows closer to each other...so I don't need to explain it too much.
Unlimited Blade Works : This is an alternate storyline of which Shiro grows closer to Rin instead.This is a "cheerful" storyline like Fate.In this,Shiro unlocks his ability to use Unlimited Blade Works as well,since Archer,too,is a Trace user.
Heaven's Feel : This is where Shiro and Sakura grows closer.However,this plot is relatively darker and more sacrifices are made.There are several endings for this as well,unlike the previous 2 which have 2 endings.When I say that this plot is dark,I mean it.Dark Saber/Saber Alter & Dark Sakura appears in here as well...

-Magic Association : It's an academy which regulates and trains users of magic.They ruthlessly kill those who threatens to reveal the existence of magic to the normal human beings.

-Saber's weapon : Hmm..I'm rather confused about her current weapon to be honest.It's definitely not Excalibur since she said she lost it a long time ago.However,the reason it is invisible is because it is in a "sheath of wind which distorts the light" However,it's full potential cannot be released unless the wind is released but it is efficient since no one can know her true identity easily and a invisible sword is hard to avoid.However,her true Noble Phantasm is the Excalibur,the sword of victory and is capable of slicing through anything and Avalon,the sheath of Excalibur that provides unsurpassed defence.Avalon is able to defend against all sorts of attacks.

-Noble Phantasm : Noble Phantasm does not always relate to a Weapon.However,a Noble Phantasm is always related to the hero's identity.It can come in various forms.Noble Phantasms is not restricted to the hero's power and is called a "trump card" of the heroic spirits.Since their power is unrestrained,even if a Servant is weaker than the other,if their Noble Phantasm is stronger,they can still win.Note that special blows made by the Noble Phantasm requires a large amount of Mana.

-Heroic Spirits : They are people who have ascended the place of worship and fame through their deeds.However,not only heroes of noble deeds ascend this place for there are people who did good things through their misdeeds and thus,reached the level of fame.Which means not only heroes can be Servants.

-Illya : I'm not sure about her age to be honest.She's a Homonculus like her mother,so the appearances of the white hair and pale skin is passed down for generations through that.It is also said that she appears younger than her real age so I guess it's worth keeping this note in mind despite her loli appearance.

-Avalon : The sheath of which Saber uses is named after her dream,Avalon,the Utopia she aims to build.

-Characters of Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya :
Illya : The main character of this special Manga.She is one day picked by the Magic Sticks by dumb luck and became a magical girl she aspires to be (But she didn't expect it to be so stressful).She apparently have some sort of power when she is in a life threatening situation..
Miyu : A transfer student of Illya's class.She could appear cold but it's just that she is unable to communicate to others well.Apparently she is chosen by the magic stick by dumb luck as well.
Rin : Well...Rin is violent as usual.She is the original wielder of the Ruby version of the magic stick.
Luvia : Hmm...as arrogant as Rin I see..Either way,she's the original user of the Sapphire stick.
Magic Sticks : This is not their original name but I just can't remember it :P Either way,the Ruby and Sapphire sticks left Rin and Luvia since they can't stand their attitudes and instantly made a contract with Illya and Miyu.These sticks provice a mass amount of Mana and magical powers.Their also multi-purpose (Walki Talkie...fortune telling..well..) The sticks are given to Rin and Luvia for a special mission to go to the city and collect Cards.
Cards : Their not exactly characters but their Heroic Spirits..Either way,the characters need to go to the parallel world on certain areas to find these cards.Their like the Dark versions of the Servants we see in the original 5th Grail War...
Dark Illya : Appeared in the second season out of a certain event.Her personality (and skin) and powers are the complete opposite of Illya's.She later attempts to kill the original Illya.
Shiro : He plays a very minor role in this Manga as Illya's brother...(Whom Illya likes...brother complex..)
Leysritt & Sella : Maids of Illya and Shiro.One is laid back while the other is serious about her work.

Special Characters (As in spin-offs) :
