The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi tv Review

Haruhi Suzumiya is a beautiful first year high school student who is smart, athletic, and won't turn down any guy who asks her out. The problem is that she isn't interested in anyone or anything who isn't an alien, time traveler, slider, or ESPer - as such no guy has lasted for more than a week with her.

When she realizes that none of the clubs at school cater to her highly eccentric tastes, she drafts her classmate, Kyon (the narrator and voice of reason) and forms the "Suzumiya Haruhi's Save our World by Overloading it with Fun" Brigade (the S.O.S. Brigade for short). Nobody quite knows what the club does other than to satisfy the whims of Haruhi, but it is becoming evident that there is more to Haruhi than it seems, and that there may be more truth to her delusional beliefs than reason would leave most to believe.

Story & Characters

Ok, to start this review off (which happens to be my first review!), I found out about this anime by chance. I saw a video of this anime set to Caramell Dansen. So, I decided to give it a go. I was captivated after the first episode. The story was quirky, awkward, and hilarious in the oddest ways. I also learned some Japanese culture from this show (moe'). The story is full of laughs and characters that you would simply love to meet. Sometimes, the story lags a bit, but you forget this after seeing your favorite character.

Since this show is very character-centric, I feel obligated to give character reviews:

Haruhi Suzumiya-the central character of the show. Haruhi is...well, kinda awkward. Sometimes you hate her, sometimes you love her. I most of the time loved her. She's eccentric to the extreme (a point brought up by the next character I am about to review, Kyon) and just can't keep her hands off of fellow female character Mikuru. In all, she's a great, interesting character that brings the series to life.

Kyon-Kyon might very well be my favorite character in this series, and for the strangest reasons as well: he's sarcastic, dull, average in almost every way, and thinks very realistically. I suppose the reason I love him so much is because he is just the antibiotic you need after a dose of Haruhi's eccentricites. He's very real in every way. Not to mention the fact that he's a cutie! ;)

Yuki Nagato-Yuki is a girl of few words. In fact, she is a girl of practically no words, considering the only person she talks to is Kyon. She is most of the time just sitting in a chair reading a book. I love Yuki simply because I love those characters that don't say much and yet, are so strong. But to be honest, it's hard to pinpoint exactly why I like Yuki so much.

Mikuru Asahina-Mikuru was a character that I didn't enjoy all that much. She was a damsel in distress throughout the whole series. Sometimes, it was charming; sometimes, it was flat-out irritating. She's very weak and I almost like her better when she is being tortured by Haruhi and her infamous eccentricities.

Itsuki Koizumi-Easily my least favorite character in the show. He was too perfect in looks. I also felt that he was a bit of a jerk. The show wouldn't be the same without him, but I'm just not sure if that's a bad thing or not.

Art

The artwork is close to amazing. The animation is very fluid and feels real. The style fits the anime and it's plot elements. However, the real treasure trove of artwork is found in the settings. They are very detailed and rich in color. The one problem I had with the artwork was the constant hair-los on all the characters constantly. Throughout the whole show, the character have this constant shine around their hair, no matter the lighting.

Sound

The sound is hard to judge. I like the themes. "Bouken Desho Desho" by Aya Hirano really gives you an idea of how the show will be. And then there's the infamous "Hare Hare Yukai" that has spawned so many internet videos. But at times, the opening theme (Bouken Desho Desho) sounds a bit odd and, to put it frankly bad. I like the songs, but at times they sound a little weird. The backround music is forgettable and you often don't even pay attention to it. Both the Japanese and English soundtracks are great and enjoyable. Haruhi's voice actress brings her to life with vibrance and energy befitting her character. Kyon's voice is absolutely perfect and Yuki's voice, despite not being heard often, is suiting. Mikuru's voice is feeble and irritating. Her Japanese seiyu is far more enjoyable to listen to. Itsuki, despite my intense dislike for him, is perfect for him. Great voices and mediocre music is what makes up this anime's sound.

Presentation

The show was borderline-amazing making me laugh, feel awkward, question my religion, and even (to my great surprise) dance. The humor is fresh and doesn't go overboard with the awkwardness. I recommend this show most definitely. I'm hoping for a second season soon!

I plan to rewatch Haruhi because I thought it was pretty amazing. Although I remember the episode where they show Yuki reading for like half the episode, and that kind of bothered me. But Kyon is indeed a cutie, hehe. I love his sideburns. Haruhi x Kyon. Hehe. Oh, silly fangirl side coming out... Must suppress! Serious face.
