Lelouch of the Rebellion

Lelouch of the Rebellion tv Review

Lelouch was a prince until the day his mother was murdered; his little sister Nunnally became paralyzed and blinded. Now in high school, he's bored with life, playing chess with rich aristocrats to stave off boredom while caring for Nunnally. One day, he meets a mysterious woman named C.C. who offers him power through a contract which he accepts; C.C told him that this power is called "Geass" and it can forcibly make other people obey his command with eye contact. With this new found power, he adorns a mask calling himself Zero. He then begins to gather warriors calling themselves the Black Knights, with the ultimate goal to overthrow Britannia and recreate a perfect utopia where his sister can live a life of peace.

R2 is a direct sequel to the main series. Lelouch is back to his old ways of playing chess with aristocrats, his life and memories of being Zero suppressed and his sister Nunnally somehow replaced with a brother named Rolo. A year later, C.C. finds him and is able to restore his memories and his power. Remembering who he really is, he's determined to get back to doing what he'd started a year ago as well as find out what happen to his sister!

Story & Characters

The story was a wonderful job. It was original enough to catch your eye when your scrolling threw all those lists of anime plot lines. Although it has mechas in it that's not the main storyline. The story lifts you up in a positive way while also slapping you in the face with this thing called reality.

The storyline has many different elements which make it unique. It had a sci-fi theme but it sneaks in fantasy elements into it. It also has chunks of realty to go with it, and that feeling in the back of your mind saying "This is so close" when the words "2010" pop on the screen. It pulls you in and makes you part of the story while, being the viewers, it gives you the chance to get inside the characters heads.

Although it follows the simple "This is an ordinary teen who is changing the world." plot, it presents it in a different hue. It not only shows the heroes but it shows the villains. and there perspective. And it gets you wondering who the real villains and heroes are. Is the hero Lelouch? The boy who is taking down Britannia for his little sister to create a peaceful world? Sounds hero like. But when he makes so many sacrifices you start thinking Britannias the one in the right. It would be peaceful if all the Japaneses would just give up there pride.

The storyline just tugs at your brain going "What about this? Is THIS normal?" So, I found the story very fun and interesting. Although the last few episodes ran a bit slow, it picked up the pace again on the last episode.

So now after being so calm in that examination...CODE GEASS ROCKS!

Art

The whole Art design is wonderful. Clamp did a glorious job once more!
The whole look of the charters fits the theme. It's very detailed and
very real. One of the best animation jobs I have ever seen.

There are some moments where the art did get low quality but I still enjoy the animation.
The detail is unbelievable! even there hair seems to grow threw the story line!

The only thing bad I really have to say is some details in the coloring when the series first
started was some what bad quality but later in the series it's fine. That's all I can say.

Other wise I praise CLAMP for their wonderful job!

Sound

The voices in the Japanese version are glorious! no one could have done it better!
The quality is also outstanding. and the voices fit the story and the characters. The voices for the Japaneses version
sound real. They sound intelligent and not make believe. The actors make you believe the character. which is a huge advantage when it comes to anime and things. Each character has their individual voice that makes them who they are. There voices are part of the story just as the animation or sound effects.

The OSTs are fantastic!
I feel like I'm sitting in a full scale orchestra! I love the fact that it is a mecha/war like anime but they mixed the elegant sound of acoustic into it. And as a musician myself I appreciate that even more, it shows that they poured all they had into this anime. The music builds up the serious moments then soothes you down at the calm moments. it makes the scene so much lighter at the funny parts and it puts the tear-jerking effect in the tragic moments. The OSTs is the best. There are those few songs though that make you skip the track when your JUST listening to it on a CD. But when you watch it with the video it isn't as bad.

The voices in the English version are okay. Although I think they should have a different actor for Lelouch and a different actor for Nunnally, over all they did a good job. I guess just watching the original version were you know "This is how the director wanted it" is allot more fun though. The voice overs in the English version just aren't as believable.

Presentation

Code Geass is not a humor. Yet the story line is still very enjoyable. There were parts I laughed and smiled. There were parts I cried, parts were I screamed, and parts were I felt the pain of the characters. All those parts were what made up the anime. it was very wonderful! It kept me watching! very addicting in that sense is you will.

The whole presentation of the anime was outstanding. At first you think that Lelouch is just another teenager in a another stupid action filled anime. but it's so much more then that. This is one of the very first anime I have seen that goes by strategies and tells you the logic behind them. Yet it can still entertain the action lovers with the intense battle moments performed by the mechas called Knightmares. And that's another thing! It's not just a stupid mecha anime. It's more then that. A strategic, action filled, tear-jerking, anime. It had all elements to entertain you and keep your attention. It makes you use your brain.

Haha, this review was so emotinal! Great contrast, I like it.

  2. xellon Dec 14, 2008

AGREED! I give Code Geass a 9.7. This anime by faaarr has the best mecca type animation ever. The Character animation I will give a 9. Reason is because I've seen better. Story, sound, art, are all awesome (perfect 10's). Music I give an 8. The ost are kinda boring to listen to. However, the music fit very very very well with the anime. I had no complaints about watching the video and hearing the music at the same time. But those songs are just ok for me.

The first thing you should always do before writing a review is make sure you know how to differentiate between reviewing and ranting. Only if you know the difference can you be a truly good review writer. Unfortunately, it doesn't look as if you know those two apart as this comes off far more of a rant than a coherent review. Looking at your "Story & Characters" section, I see no description of the plot, plot devices or anything that would give a reader an idea what you were reviewing. All I get is how much you loved it with no real substantiating evidence. Then as we get to "Art" I see that you have some negativity towards it, yet you still rated it a '10'.

Couple this with the obvious formatting errors of the \\\\ and I'd say that you have her nothing more than a rant. When I see an overall score of a '10' I expect to feel that enthusiasm of the reviewer while at the same time finding myself compelled to watch the show, or mentally re-live the experience. Yet your "review" provides me with none of that. Take this one back to the drawing board and put in some effort.

Code Geass is a great anime of action and suspense. You were never know what happen next. I recomend this anime of anyone who want to see one anime very entertainment.

  5. Akaiken Dec 16, 2008

Hmm... rating it "10" without an in-depth explanation about the anime. Wow... haven't seen one doing it for a while.

I'm no reviewer or having the skills for making reviews but I know for a fact that this lacks the qualities that makes this a review. And as shoujoboy said, this is more of a rant rather a review. Some advices... give more in-depth explanations on EVERY PART of the review. If Code Geass really deserves a "10", as you rate it, prove it to the ones who read this. You should also edit the format of this... the \\\\ thing is very disturbing.

Well... we just want you to improve so no offense, okay? :)

  6. BossMac Dec 17, 2008

No nothing in everything. God, this makes me feel sorry as a CG fan.

Mad propz to the first line of the Presentation section. Great job on answering the review guide.

But in all seriousness, you've pretty much just typed this thing up in a few minutes. Typos, formatting errors, inconsistent ideas, so on and so forth. You sound like you've paid attention to the show's details but you fail to properly illustrate your ideas.

You should consider rewriting your "review".

Is it just me or is everybody being totally biased?
Ya Code geass is cool but it aint the best yo
If it was, they should have had Noto Mamiko for one of the voice casts and Gonzo should have done the animation (and no I'm not saying Trinity Blood is the best because it had those 2 in it but I am saying that TB was cool)
Anyway.... ya must agree that u dont seem to have put much (if any) effort writing this
Writing a review isnt the same as worshipping your favorite anime

  8. KevinLehqvs Dec 19, 2008

    @# shoujoboy
    I agree with ya.

    @LuluAddict
Try checking anime-source.com. I like the reviews there, with lots of great reviewers, you might be able to improve your writing. Don't be disheartened! Everyone starts from being a newbie, just write more reviews and you'll be able to improve through time. Also, take the time to proof-read before submitting, to ensure no grammatical errors etc.

Without a doubt the beat anime ever! the characters (will the samll exception of rolo) are amazing, Lelouch's japanes voice the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.

plus, it dosn't dragged on forever (like yu-gi-oh or pokemon ^-^)

  10. MetalhedDex Dec 21, 2008

The first season of Code Geass was great but the second season seemed bland and dragged on by comparison but it was still ultimately enjoyable. When it was first announced that the second season would be the end of it all, I heard alot of people complaining saying they wanted more Code Geass but I think it was a good thing it ended. There's nothing worse than an anime that drags itseld out to death.

    @Shojoboy and KevinLehqvs

Okay guys i get it, i SUCK at writing reviews! It's in my head now! I'm okay with it!
I just was hyper, sleep deprived, and i just suck at everything. so its fine. I don't plan to wright another review i just thought I'd try it out. And i rant. I RANT ALLOT!

If i EVER have the energy to fix it i'll fix it.

  12. peta14 Dec 23, 2008

I like Code Geass. Although admittedly I don't think its as great as a lot of people make it out to be. Each to their own I guess. The animation is beautiful though. But would you expect less from CLAMP?

  13. LuluAddict Dec 31, 2008

Oh! There! I try and fix it so I'm not rambling and guess what. IT DIDN'T WORK! Guess you guys are stuck with me emotional reveiw! ohh, what now?!

  14. Sakura-Dust Jan 07, 2009

In my opinion no CLAMP art deserves a full 10.
No matter how you look at it, the anatomy is really messed up.
The gesture's amplitude might be boosted by the freakish long hands and legs in battle scenes, but overall the characters have quite a strange appearance.
The amount of details is always over the top in CLAMP scans and their bodies are ok too (sometimes), but in anime it's a reason to twitch.
    I'd say 9 or even 8, but it's all my opinion ^_^

You are correct about the action filled episodes and the crazy voice acting. Thanks to the studio sound effects, Lulu became one of the best psychotic characters ever.

I admit the anime truly deserves a high score, but don't be afraid to hit other marks than '10' ^_^'
I suggest you write a review when your obsession for a certain anime is (almost) done. That way you can clear your thoughts about it and check its negative points too. (I should know, when I obsess over an anime I think it's the most awesome thing ever created XD)

My personal rating for CG is 8,50.
Topping the anatomy from hell, Lulu was often drawn with 6 fingers ^_^'

  15. swanmaiden Jan 11, 2009

    nice review
but I'd add that all that fanservice was sometimes too annoying...

  16. ritzoz Jan 13, 2009

lelouch rocks!..awesome anime..and the graphics is the best so far..no wonder why it won a prize in japan!...

  17. ZEUSSHADOW Jan 16, 2009

This is one of the best animes i've ever seen
Starded well and ended well.I give a 10 on the music, the voice it's not
so bad as many of you said it is in the english version,I still like it.
The ending the best,it let you think that lelouch still alive somewhere.
    Good job CLAMP!.

    X-P

C.C is the best. Maybe a third season or OVA?

  20. altrun Jan 23, 2009

There is no season three... its too bad really since its such a great anime. Code Geass FTW~~

  21. Gewik Jan 25, 2009

I must say, having watched anime for many many years, I would certainly put Code Geass in my top 5. I Love to Japanese version, but the English voices absolutely ruin the feel for me. I can only hope a third season is made, though that would be the question of wtf would it be about. They already did world domination. Maybe aliens?

  22. ShinjuyokuLelouchgrl Jan 27, 2009

Yes its true Code Geass:Lelouch of the rebellion is the best anime I've ever seen also, only because I'm in Love with Lu Lu ^_^ Its such an intriging anime with an even better plot and each climax has you stranded. I cant tell if its Shojo or Shonen , the main character is a male , but there is romance involved: C.C, Shirley, Kallen, Euphie etc) how many girls love him? :) but u gotta admit he's cute and awesome! Please write another opsessed with Lelouch column I like learning more about the series as I go , I didnt watch the whole series in japanese, or read all the manga, but its slowly proceeding in English on Adult swim. The last episode I watched was the one when Kallen fell onto Lelouch and they.. kissed :P So cute Please write more I'm in love with Code Geass and want to learn more as a loving fan! thanx for the column:)

  23. Pervy-Otaku Jan 30, 2009

This is a great review ^^ I totally agree. ALL HAIL LELOUCH! Lol ^w^

  24. davidh01 Jan 31, 2009

Perfect 10s. Whoo, that doesn't give you much room to move for the next best thing that comes out and trounces CG. Firstly some good news. You've made some decent comments and even backed some of them up with evidence to justify your position - so good job there. Now for some criticism: Quite simply some of your comments don't justify the scores. For example your comment in the Art section where you say the art did drop in quality, but you still gave it a 10? Fair enough if you didn't think the drop was sufficient to reduce your enjoyment - but please make that point clear.

You made a good start, but may I suggest a bit of a tidy-up, revisit some of your comments and expand on some parts you glossed over (e.g. the voices part of the Audio section - why do you feel that they are the best) and you'll have something really worthwhile here. As I say to other submitters, your job when you write any review is to convince other members that the series is worth watching on the basis of your opinions. You've done that in part - but if I was reading your review only, and not looking at other sources, I couldn't be convinced of the merits of the series just by your comments. BTW, the editing bug has been sorted out - so it'll be a good opportunity to tidy things up a bit.

[EDIT 2009-02-01 15:02aest] Just looked at your alterations. Much better, and I'm pleased to see you've expanded on your audio section comments. The scoring looks a lot more reasonable IMO and demonstrates that you show balance in your judgements rather than succumbing to the typical rant/rave/"fanboy" response.
