Story & Characters

The anime starts with two ordinary boys, Takeru and Ryou, highschool students and part-time workers in a grocery. While they are returning from a delivery one evening, they saw a bright light in the sky which then hit ground somewhere in the wood. Both of them followed to see what happened, and what they found is a girl, coming from a bright light. So Takeru named her "Hikari"- meaning "light". Without warning, a giant monster came and attempted on killing Hikari, suddenly Takeru transformed into some muscular creature and was able to use his super-human ability to protect her. Thus, starting their love story. After a while, Ryou himself found a little girl whom he called "Akari". He brought her home and a lovely sister-brother relationship began. The story will reveal more about the giant creature trying to kill Hikari, and what Hikari and Akari really are? I would leave that to the interested watcher. In my view, this not so happy ending romance story is suitable to the Gainax's 20th aniversary animation.

Art

As this anime is from the Gainax studio, you could expect seeing the same style of art as Neon Genesis Evangelion and Mahoromatic. The characters are well-designed, I found Hikari and Akari are my favourite characters. Other ones are OK, as you would expect from a studio like Gainax. And the art is in a good level, though not fantastic. What I also like about the series is the simple design of the "red butterfly", covering the sky in a bright and scary tone. Also, the monsters in the story are frightful and powerpul enough to convince us that it is really there. Nice artwork for such an anime.

Sound

The sound effects in the story is not so special, but the background music helps a lot. Konomini's OST, especially the opening, "Metamorphose", is what I reccommended for listening. The song is what drew me to the story at first. Also, the ending of the last episode has a great meaning inside, combining with the background ending, it almost makes me cry. The other instrumental tracks are original works that are good to listen. It helps fulfill the emotional scent of the story during times. The OST album is a must-have for the fans of "Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai".

Presentation

The tone of the story is not an original, for destined love at first sight between boys and girls are a usual event in the anime world. Also, the brother-sister relationship is not something new, though I like watching the part. But in the whole picture, the storys binds all between romantic love, brother-sister love, jealousy and humor. The creator knew the moment to switch between humorous events and meaningful conversations. It is fun to see Mari's reaction when Hikari and Takeru are having good emotions for each other. In the other side, the sad tone of the story is stronger in the last episodes. It feels bad to see Mari's tears when she saw her loved one with another girl. Also, when Hikari and Akari finally have to leave the world, it is depressing to me, as they can only embrace their love in their memories. It is a very good anime to watch, although maybe not very suitable for those who like philosophical topics or action scenes. But it you're looking for a good love story, this is it! The storys presents its words well.

A simple review, but good job all the same.
