One Piece tv,manga Review

One Piece, the treasure of a lifetime, is being sought by every pirate in the seven seas. One boy's dream is to find that treasure and to become King of the Pirates. That boy is Monkey D. Luffy, and with his rag-tag crew he will sail the Grand Line searching for a treasure that will make any pirate's dream come true.

Synopsis: Sargent066.

Story & Playability

I simply have to do a review on One Piece because its one of the greatest animes ever :D

One Piece is all about friendship.
The most touching scene in OP is the part when all the crew stood in a line, turned back and raised the back of their hands to show Vivi all the tatoos they have got. And Vivi cried like mad. I remember when I watched Naruto I cried like mad all the time. But when I was watching this most touching scene in OP, I did not cry at all. I smiled and smiled and smiled because the friendship in OP really touches my heart.

One Piece is all about the pursuit of your dreams.
"I am going to become the pirate king!" and with that, Luffy set out to make his dreams come true, taking with him nothing but a small boat and sheer determination and faith.

One Piece is all about adventure.
An island with only one season: Winter, an island lived 2 giants, an island floating in the sky - the grand line is filled with landscape that is wierd and bizzare, and only the most adventurous get to experience all those.

OP is currently 300+ episodes and (I hope) still a long way to go. However it has captured me right from the very first episode. I never get bored of OP, even though sometimes the plot are quite predictable (for example you just knew that they are going to win XXX and YYY whenever they engage in fights). However the plot never fails to surprise me as well. And I love the surprises. The extreme amount of creativity put into moulding the plot of OP is nothing compared to any other anime I have watched.
There are no bad guys in OP. All characters has got their own stories and you simply can't hate any of them. Even though the forever reccuring Buggy the Clown is sometimes a bit irritating but I still love his red nose :D
As for the good guys, well, I simply love each and everyone of them. Usoppe is a character that I grew to love as I watched OP, and I am very impressed with what the creator of OP had done with Usoppe.
However, I have to say that OP is not for those who like realistic animes. OP is nothing like the real world, because the idea behind it is that if you have faith, dare to pursue, you can achieve your dreams. Also, even though conflicts do happen, for example the major conflict over Going Merry between Luffy and Usoppe, but betrayal between friends is never in the picture of OP. In a sense OP is set in an overly idealistic situation with very idealist characters.
Those who loves animes like OP and do not give a damn about being realistic will love OP. However those who are the opposites to this will hate OP. In order to balance these 2 views, I have to give a 5 for story and characters :)

Graphics

The design of characters in OP is very different from the typical anime designs. The characters in OP certainly does not look very pretty or very handsome, and some of them not even normal looking, for example Mr 2. However they are all very unique, and the designs really suit some of their characters, for example Mr 2. Don't you just love Mr 2 :D
The colours used in OP is always very bright, colourful, vibrant, and it suits the overall mood of the anime very much. The characters are designed with simple and clean lines, simple and bright colours, nothing fanciful like Last Exile, but as memorable.
I love the way the sea is drawn in OP. It is just too romantic. And the giant sea creatures as well. The sunset, the sea, sea creatures, and going merry, all linked together to form a perfect picture.
Well, all credit goes to the great Mr Oda :)

Sound

Luffy's voice cast is tremendously amazing. The best voice cast ever. And it is by a girl. It brings out the character of Luffy so well.
The rest of the voice cast is good as well, just that Luffy's is too outstanding. :D
The background music of OP did a great job during the fighting scenes in OP. Also because the background music is set in classical style, with the use of a full orchestra, it really brings out the romance of the sea.
As for the opening and ending songs, there are a lot of them. However I feel that "We Are" captures the whole spirit of OP thus it rocks. Most of the other songs also captures the energy OP has got, and they are especially good if you are struggling to study at midnight 3 o'clock.

Fun

Yes, I do agree that OP is not a bit realistic at all. However, after a long day's struggle at work or school, it's time to just sit back, watch the show, and relax. Don't think about anything, don't worry about anything, just enjoy. At least what OP offers is a bit of an escape from this complicated world, and a bit of a reminder of all the wonderful things on this world.
OP is suitable for humans across the age, however parents must be aware of the revealing clothes that some of the female characters wear. Even though there are violence and blood I feel that the violence level is pretty much same as Tom and Jerry. Thus OP is highly recommended for those seeking a bit of fun.
p/s: Do not worry about OP having so many episodes and having to start from the first. I started watching OP when it is 100+ episodes, and it does not affect the level of enjoyment I had for OP.

My third review! I believe that a 5 for story pulled the final verdict down, but I feel that it is pretty justified :D

I really Like Zolo. I have a sword and I try and practice with it. I'm not that good.

  4. cygnostratus Jun 08, 2007

I like Portgas.D.Ace Better... he's cool and besides, he's luffy's brother... and speaking of Ace, i wonder, ace has a different family name, while luffy is Monkey.D.Luffy, and his grandfather Monkey.D.Garp .... but why is Ace different... anyways, the epic battle between Ace and Blackbeard... IS NOT CONTINUED?! WTF IS ON ODA'S HEAD?!

nice review, but i'd separate anime/manga because for me, it's about 6 for the animated version and about 10 for the manga :p
