Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus game Review

Story & Playability

This game is the only complete Final Fantasy shooter game that I know of. That in itself is a reason to play it for a little while. Even though it is another sequel to the Final Fantasy VII series, the story does remain unique. It is really neet to see the same sort of environments that existed in the orginal Final Fantasy game in the Dirge of Cerberus game. Through the monotany of the shooting, there are many different scenes or flashbacks that explain certian parts of the story in the game, and even some parts of the story in other parts of the Final Fantasy VII series.

The story consists of twelve chapters and you play as Vincent Valentine. The first chapter starts in Kalm and you also go through WRO and Deepground headquarters. There are also some other places like Midgar that you travel too. In most of the chapters you have to either rescue civilians, help WRO members, or just shoot a bunch of enemies. If you plan to go through each chapter and not try to get the memory capsules, you can beat the main story line in about thirty hours or so. There are also forty six extra missions that can be unlocked. The memory capsules that are located in the twelve chapters unlock the events that you see throughout the game. The memory capsules that are contained in the extra missions unlock the rest of the games extras, like the art and music.

Throughout the cut scenes and the cinematics, it is really neat to see how the characters are related with each other and the events that lead up to the current events that you face in the game. There are a few really nice character suprizes in the game! I would love to tell them here, but that would be major spoiling! ^_^ Because of the cut scenes, people who like the story lines can go through the shooting and melee quickly to find out what happens next. There are also a few unlimited shoot out spots that are located later in the game. Because of the chalenges of getting the 'S' ranking, people who like the 'shooter' aspect of the game will have plenty to focus on.

Just as a little hint: There are also three 'G' reports that you can collect, and once you do that you can watch the secret ending after the 'The End' screen. There are many suprizes in the secret ending! You do not need to get S rankings in all of the chapters to see it. I don't really know what happens when you get a S ranking in all of the chapters. . .

Graphics

Well, since it is Final Fantasy, of course the art is going to be supurb! The in game graphics are pretty good and are even better than the more recent Final Fantasy games. The high resolution cg graphics are top-notch and are as realistic as cg art comes. The cg scenes were the same calibur as the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children movie, since they used the same characters in the movie and the Dirge of Cerberus game.

The character designs were really nice as well! I love the costum designs for Deepground, and the clothing designs for the main characters were awesome as well. Even though they were some different styles for WRO, Deepground, and the main characters, you can tell that they had the same quality and style. Each of the characters had many details put in to make them all the more intriguing.

Also, the movements of the characters fit nicely as well. The smooth movement is an important part of the cut scenes. If it wasn't animated properly, the video just doesn't flow as well and lowers the quality of the cg scenes.

Sound

The music in Dirge of Ceberus had a different mix than that of the other Final Fantasy games. Gackt Camui sung two of the songs (Longing and Redemtion) and they both play right after another in the last chapter of the game. They are really good songs, but I didn't really feel that the fit in the game play as well as a purely orchaestral peices. I really do like the songs though, I would love to listen to them outside of the game and everything. That is just my opinion.

The actual musical score is very fitting to the game. There is plenty of variety in the in game music, and each characters theme fits them well. From the bass of the horns, to the shrill of the violin, the music keeps you in the mood for the game. The music that is really quite is the perfect music to get you in the mood for some fun stealth sniping. And the fast paced music fits the rush of an ambush, or the rush to stay alive. All of the music that was played is very fitting.

The voice acting was also very nice! Vincent had a nice deep sound, Rosso had a really fun accent to listen too, and Cid had the funnest southern accent. Cid always mad me laugh! The game had the same voice acters for the Advent Children movie, so that fit in really well. The voice acting all in all, was as perfect as it can be.

Fun

I have never played a shooter before this one, well, except a little bit of Oni (the sight movement was much too fast, so I quit after the first few minutes), so I don't really have a lot to compare it too. After the first few chapters I found the controls easier to manipulate.

I did not care for the leveling up system too much, but I can't think of anything better to do. I suppose it could be possible to maybe use a portion of the experience to trade in for gil, so you can level up at the same time, but you can pick up a lot of gil througout the chapter which isn't bad. Ether way, when you choose to level up instead of converting the exp to gil, you leveled up more than one level. It is a good idea to alternate leveling up and converting the experience to gil. Some of the upgrades to the weapons were really expensive, especially nearing the end.

I do think that the ranking systems is set up very well. Since everything is based on average, if you get a D rank in one category, and S ranks in all of the other ones, you will get a S rank. I was really suprized when I got a S rank on the last two chapters that I played, and on the one before that I got an A rank. Other than that, I kept on getting B ranks because I spend a lot of time trying to get everything and my acurracy rate was too low.

Also, there are some humorous moments in the game, but most of them are nostalgic since they help to explain the story line. There are also a few really common lines, like 'It is time to save the world' type thing. I guess you can count them as humorous. . . Also, Cid's speach lines are always funny!

Well written review on a game I hear nothing but terrible things about. I don't think I've ever seen a review that scores it this highly although you did a good job explaining your stance. Still not sure if I'm willing to chance playing it though.

This is a personally well-written review. The only curiosity that remains is the very game play that needs to be initiated, especially for those who have yet to play it. The game play sounds different from the other Final Fantasy games but similar to games like Condemned and Fear, which are not anime-based and should've been excluded from my synopsis. Good review, Victoria!

I fell in love with this game when I first played it since u could play as Vincent alone instead of Cloud or anyone else from the FFVII games.
It was alot of fun, since it was a FF and a shooting game.
My first shooting game and I always kept on getting B or C rank but as I kept on playing, I got alittle better within each chapter ^-^
