Gakuen Alice

Gakuen Alice tv Review

Story & Characters

Gakuen Alice (Alice Academy) by Tachibana Higuchi, is in my opinion, a very interesting, light-hearted anime and is a good option to release all the pain of watching adventurous anime. Compared to other animes, this anime is one of a kind since it's about people with Alice, a special power.

The story itself is very easily digested, and is very suitable for younger kids since it doesn't involve lots of extreme violence and butt-kicking scenes. Maybe others might think this anime is slow-paced, boring and plain, but I find this anime truly enjoyable since I'm quite tired of looking at teen-based anime. The story focuses on elementary students rather than teenage students, with the introduction of the main character to a new school, adjusting herself to the new environment, having a person that hates you to like you stuffs like that.

It is highly possible that Gakuen Alice can be a good match for Cardcaptor Sakura. Although the latter has much more presentable characters. However, Gakuen Alice does not contain many cliff hangers and mysteries which, tend to make the viewer go crazy thinking about what will happen.

The characters in Gakuen Alice looks pretty normal, in the sense of how they appear in the anime. Characters are very common looking and none of them stand out from the rest. It's quite logical since 10-year-old students are not known for following trendy fashions. Though it might be a setback for the anime itself. But putting that aside, it's a very vibrant story.

Art

The animation of Gakuen Alice is by far still acceptable. However, the thing that I didn't like in Gakuen Alice is how they drew buildings which are outside of the campus itself. As if the animators themselves have been locked in Gakuen Alice for quite a while and they've forgotten how the outside world look like. Blocky buildings, flat-looking objects and not much passer-bys are very unusual.

But apart from that, the look of the uniforms and the characters are good, and possibly, better than the manga.

Sound

Both OP and ED of Gakuen Alice is sung by Ueda Kana and Kugimiya Rie, the voice actress for the main girl characters.

OP: Pika Pika no Taiyo/Sparkling Sun
ED: Shiawase no Niji/Rainbow of Happiness

Light-hearted song for such light-hearted anime. And the OSTs are absolutely good. No comment.

Though the only thing that annoys me a lot is how Ueda Kana voiced Mikan. If I'm not wrong it should be Kansai accent with all the -ya that ends almost every of her sentences. It's not that I'm against Kansai-accent characters, it's just that Mikan's high-pitched voice + whimpering is getting on my nerves. But that voice, honestly, has portrayed Mikan's personality quite well.

But with Paku Romi voicing Natsume, it's a plus. I've always enjoyed how well she can perform and voice male character's because before I knew Paku Romi is a woman, I thought the voice actor for Natsume was a real guy. So I'd say the sound is acceptable.

Presentation

The story develops greatly as Mikan herself has finally been accepted by her classmates. It's the matter of from hate to like. Characters in Gakuen Alice grow, mentally.

But the thing that makes Gakuen Alice very enjoyable to watch has got to be the presentation of how each students perform their own Alice. I still can't forget the scenes where Narumi-sensei uses his pheromone to solve his problems.

Mikan's reaction to some certain things is also a plus. Exaggeration is the word.

Besides main characters, side characters maintains the same and they don't really stand out alone. Usually they're always there as comic reliefs.

Overall, not very tense while watching so it's pretty good.
