Fate/stay night

Fate/stay night tv Review

Fate/stay night was originally a game developed by TYPE-MOON, and is also the first creation which TYPE-MOON made after going into business (instead of being a group of Doujinshi artists).

Seven Masters, Seven Servants. Only one can correspond to the Holy Grail.

In the legend, the Holy Grail is an artifact that can make your wishes come true, in order to summon the Holy Grail, a ceremonial is required. The seven Masters chosen by the Holy Grail will be granted the seven Servants chosen by the Holy Grail: Saber, Lancer, Archer, Rider, Caster, Assassin, and Berserker. The Master must prove him/herself that he or she is the only one qualified to use the Holy Grail. In other words, he or she must defeat all the other Masters to prove him/herself.

Shiro Emiya lost his parents in a fire when he was young, and was adopted by a magician, even though he denied teaching Shiro magic, the un-talented Shiro still master a little. When the magician died, Shiro remained a worthless magician. Entangled with the "War of the Holy Grail" by accident, Shiro was granted the Servant "Saber" and was chosen to be one of the seven Masters.

Story & Characters

This story is about the royal war for the Holy Grail. There were seven magicians, called "Masters", participated in the war. Along with them were the seven Heroic Spirits, each from different classes, and they were known as "Servants". Their names were Saber, Archer, Lancer, Caster, Assassin, Rider and Berserker.

All of these characters went on a quest to search for the sacred Holy Grail, which was told according to the legend that would grant its owner any thing they wish for. All the Masters and their Servants were chosen by the Holy Grail. If they agree to take part in this quest, they must prepare themselves carefully in order to get the Holy Grail and stay alive.

According to the legend, the Servants were heroes from the past, and each of them had their own identities, which was the true form before they became the servant. These heroic spirits became servants because they themselves also wanted to Holy Grail for their own good, and that was the reason why they joined this war. Each of the servants had his own Noble Phantasm, which can be understood as his most secret and powerful weapon. Noble Phantasm is the weapon, which was used to express their true power and their ultimate skills. A servant could have one or more Noble Phantasm. Noble Phantasm required lots of servant's mana to work, so it is probably the last choice in fighting, unless they have way to gain mana.

Shirou, one of the chosen masters, was the central character. In fact, he was just a half-ass magician, and he joined the war incidentally with only one purpose, which was to end it without causing harm to anyone. He summoned servant Saber, who is considered to be the most outstanding class. After the battles, they gradually became closer together. Beside Saber, Shirou also teamed up with another master, and her name was Rin Tohsaka. Rin was a pure-magician, she has prepared for this war since she was a child.

I must admit that Shirou is a kind of symbolic characters, which mostly appears in every anime. A young man whose desire was saving this world. He was so naive, so pure, and has known nothing about the secret world. With the help of Saber and Rin, together they fought against other masters. Even though the ideas in Fate/Stay Night isn't special, it will never bore the viewers. It brings us the idea of having faith in others by believing that no one is really bad, and that there is always a reason behind one's action. I especially like Ilya, she can be very innocent girl as a small girl and also cold killer as a master.

What would this war lead to? Could Shirou fulfill his wish? Would he and Saber have a nice ending? How could he win this battle without killing other masters?
Lots question bumped out as soon as I watch the very first episode. Many things happened throughout the 24eps of the anime, and that made me cannot stop watching until I reached the end.

Art

Art in Fate/Stay Night anime is really nice in overall.

If you didn't watch the anime but only see poster or scans, then you would not like the art since the drawing is really touch and has shounen-feeling in it (yeah shoujo art's always more smooth) But the fact is that it's kind of perfect). The lightning in each battle is really impressive and I like how they draw Saber's invisible sword in the early episode, and the preparation when she used her Noble Phantasm. Those scenes look so beautiful and magical.

TYPE-MOON has done a great job in designing characters in this game/anime. While Saber dimmed into her blue amour, and simply looked beautiful with her blond chignon, Rin on the other hand, was a gorgeous girl with long curve brown hair. She wore dark skirt with red shirt and had seductive green eyes. Shirou was not really handsome but his plain clothes specialized him from other characters. Other servants and masters were also in nice forms too.

Animation is one of the great successes of this anime. The battles always have fast moved scene, that's why I always have to concentrate on the screen in order to fully understand it. Animation got improved after each episode. When Saber first met Berserker, I was not really impressed, however I especially like the battle between Saber and Rider in the terrace of the building and also the scene when they were at Caster's temple. So meticulous drawing!!! In addition, there was hardly any repeated scene like in most anime, which I've watched. The scenes in this anime are just simply various and attractive.

I must admit that even though Fate/Stay Night art is not perfect, I think that it is one of the greatest art ever to be made in anime.

Sound

Perfect was the first thing that came to my mind after I started watching this anime. Saber voice was really cool and sharp. It fitted with her personality. Her voice was also the most impressive voice in the anime. In contrast, Rin's voice was kind of softer but also very nice. I especially love Illya's voice because it sounded like a lovely child, so cute and so pure. Even when she was killing someone, Illya never lost her innocent voice. However, I dislike the voice of Shirou and Archer because they sounded so low. Archer is okay, but when I first saw Shirou I didn't think he's a high school student; I suppose he must be at least 20 or more. But later then, his voice got better and suited him more. Though I must admit that I like when he talk with Saber, the producer's choices is amazing ordering these two seiyuu working together.

As for the music, I listened to the opening song "Disillusion" itself and felt like it is better than the one I heard from the anime. The melody sound more interestingly professional and the treble voice of the Sachi Tanaka is more effective and soft than the original opening song I heard from anime though it is the same song. The main ending song is some kind of romantic theme compare to the fighting feeling from the opening one. I don't understand what the lyric mean but I just feel it seem to be the character's feeling through her deep wonderful voice. There're also 2 more ending songs that only present once time for each, but they're amazingly wonderful. Other songs through the anime are also appropriately nice and attractive. I don't really have enough patient to listen to the whole soundtracks, with mostly themes and character themes, so I have no idea about this but...too sleepy...this is what I feel whatever themes I listen too. So don't think Fate/stay Night theme is bad if you're a theme listener.

Presentation

Because I have never played this game before, so I have no idea what kind of H-game it is. However, according to what I've known, the story line is just a small piece of the real game Fate. Each character's identity was not very clear; therefore it is very simple for game player. Sometime, this game can also be too enigmatic for normal watcher because there were very few details about servant's true identity, how they used to live, and why they became servant, or what happened in the first and second war. In addition, the relationship between Sakura and Rin still remained mysterious even till the end of the anime, Saber's identity was just fragments through her dream and many more. That's why viewer may not know the true reason that they were forced into battle with each other and to kill one another in order to make their wishes become real. What are the true wishes? During the second Holy Grail War, many people were killed because of their desire to possess the sacred Holy Grail, did it worth that much?

There are still some points inaccurate and illogical in comparison to the original game; however, I will not say much about this since I will spoil all the mystery of it. If you spend sometimes notice, then you will see that during each battle, especially those battles which involve Berserker and Gilgamesh, I felt like they just made some stupid mistakes. As I suppose Shirou's mana provided for Saber was nearly zero, that was incredible that Saber still has not disappeared yet, even if she had to cost many of her mana for a lot of thing. Actual servant needed some more way to recover their manas other than killing people.

Even so, the story line of the anime moves quite well and makes a lot of sense, the movie show us a place that is divided between humanity and malicious chaos. In an inhumane war, people killed whoever stop them from searching for the Holy Grail. But if you watch it and you'll see that when Archer wanted to annihilate Berserker and there was actually an easier way to do without fighting, and that is kill Illya. However, he refused to do that. In fact he has reason for not doing that, but it still proved that deep from inside his heart, there is forgiveness. Rin and Shirou not only forgive Illya but he also allowed her to live in his house. Saber, the cold soldier also did not oppose that decision.

The ending of this anime is not hard to understand. As I said earlier, this is a symbolic kind of anime, but I cannot say whether it is poor or not. The most beautiful scene in this anime should be when Saber untied her hair and that was the first and only time she admitted her true gender under the magical shine. That is actually an everlasting scene for Saber, and even Shirou or the watcher. I'm sure this is not an ending that will let you down, though it is also not a perfect ending since the only short 24 episodes can not completely tell all the secret in the wonderful game made by TYPE-MOON (not about the H), and sure cannot satisfy the game players.

In conclusion, I recommended this as one of the most worth-watching anime for everybody. I can't say whether this is the most wonderful anime published in this year or not, but Fate/stay Night should have its name in the list of the greatest anime.

Want both action and romance in one anime? Fictitious and humane philosophy? Or even just bored and want something interesting. Fate/stay Night is sure made for you. A highly recommended anime.

I must say i'd have given this anime a much higher review, most of all because it was enjoyable. Very defined characters, and an action element that wasn't restricted to males only. I really enjoyed the art and sound as well, crisp, clean, and well done.

  13. nolove Dec 17, 2006

your right about the enjoyable part :) however i still see it's lack of something. maybe i need more episodes XD

  14. Chacho Dec 24, 2006

    Firstly,hi to all :)
So...personally I think FSN should have gotten a higher result, atleast an 8.But even so for me it will always be the favourite anime.I'm sure that many of you who are yet to watch it will feel the same way I did.I don't really notice what it is,but there is that touch in it that makes us dream, dream with our whole potential throught the story, that makes the overall so great.I believe fsn is not just exciting in every episode,it is something more.As if you were there, you feel what the characters feel and as if you fall in love with the anime.I'm sure everybody will understand and interprete the anime in their own way,but I am sure, that no-one will be disappointed of it.And if it really lacks something (sure it does, nothing is perfect),but it isn't something important.Nolove i think you shouldn't deduct so much. Thanks for reading my post.Bye now :P

    PS:Have fun on the holidays.Merry Christmas,and a happy new year.Easy on the alcohol ;) .
