Eureka 7 tv Review

Renton Thurston is a dreamer. His idol is a Ref Boarder named Holland, from an organisation named
Gekko State. Holland and the other members of Gekko State pilot giant mech's called LFOs (Light
Finding Operation). Renton reads of Gekko State's exploits in a magazine called ray=out, and dreams
of someday joining them. Renton even bought a replica of Holland's ref board and practices every
day to become a ref boarding champion like Holland.

It seems ref boarding is the only escape for Renton who works for his grandfather, Axel Thurston,
in the small town of Belforest. Until one day a LFO, piloted by a strange and beautiful girl,
crashes into Renton's home. This is where Renton Thurston's adventure begins...

Story & Characters

Although rather unexplained and slow to develop, Eureka Seven's plot is most likely one of the most unique developments to ever come out of Japan and Bones Animation studio. Unique from the very beginning, the story and plot in itself has no previous incarnation in any other format, but rather is an original development straight into animation. Compared to many other Anime of this generation some of the story's initial aspects may not seem that original, but beneath the surface anyone can pick apart the subtle changes Bones has done to numerous popular genres to weave together a new take on some old favourites in a single new concept. Rejoice fans of promising and thorough character development, for there is more then you can shake a stick at.

Having only picked up speed in the early teens, I recommend anyone watching to give it time to settle down before making a solid decision on whether to like or dislike the story. While somewhat confusing and even bland at first, the story soon picks up and pushes the viewer into a whirlwind of surprising plot twists, fantastic character development and unique developments throughout the course of the story's lifespan.

Art

The art in Eureka Seven is by far some of the most beautiful art ever produced by any animation studio. With the use of bright colours, fluid animation and thin lines, the characters, landscape and even machines come to life giving every life a wonderful array of emotions that are displayed quite precisely despite the use of the minimalist styling. Facial features are key in this show as all characters are given each a unique look and styling that adds to the feeling of a realistic diversity, yet despite the thin lines and minimalist styling each character is capable of displaying a wide range of emotions that even surprised me. This is well suited to the extensive character development of the series.

The art in itself is also quite well preserved between the various animation teams as there is very few drops in quality between the episodes, and those that exist are unnoticeable to those who aren't searching for them.

Rating: 9

Sound

Once again above the crowd, Eureka Seven employs one of the more intriguing soundtracks to ever grace an anime. Utilizing popular and modern musical themes and styles to bring out the feeling in each scene, the overall musical score never gets tiring to listen to and even stands well on its own without the animation. There are numerous complete songs used throughout the anime apart from the Openings and Endings, which are also addictive songs in their own right.

The musical influence and even pop culture influence on Eureka Seven is quite prevalent as many of the character's have their names taken from familiar pop culture and musical figures of modern time. The episode titles themselves are all references to pop, rock, trance, dance, techno, jazz and various other songs such as 'Blue Monday' by the New Order and 'Pacific State' by 808 State.

Presentation

Overall the presentation of Eureka Seven comes off as a well polished and well voiced anime that has unfortunately slipped under the radar of many potential fans out there. Either not having the time or the advertisement to gather sufficient hype, the series has suffered from a lack of viewers so far.

The overall lack of presence is unfortunate as the appreciation factor of the series only rises as it progresses further and even has a small replay value as many a plot quirk and hidden Easter eggs are only seen upon the second viewing which only allows a viewer to appreciate the well thought out story even more and laugh at jokes missed the first time around.

On the thought of jokes, there is quite a distinct flavour of humour present in Eureka Seven, most of it dealing with the amusing character quirks, the difficulties of building a relationship and the various amusing anecdotes and innuendos brought up by the rather intriguing cast of characters who all are extensively realistic and have their own unique sense of humour.

I recommend Eureka Seven to almost any Anime lover as there is almost something for everyone in this unique and well polished masterpiece from Bones Animation studio.

  16. SHK Dec 13, 2006

My sentiments exactly. I'm glad someone else pointed out the similarities to other series as a strength as opposed to a weakness. A lot of negative reviews I've seen describe the show as cliche, and though it does have a twinge here and there, the overall intention I believe was to take the conventions of the mecha genre and make them new and fun again.

  17. InternetShadow000 Jan 31, 2007

I love Eureka Seven...and it's hard to win me over with new anime...espesially mecha since I was never a gundam fan (sabve for Gundam Seed) I think the story is highly original and not at all cliche. I love the pop culture innuendos all over the place it makes it even more inolving since you can watch it a few times and never get bored.

This is a truly amazing anime. It's so different from a lot of other things you see out there. The animation itself was refreshing, and the OST is outstanding! But what I loved the most in this anime was the character development. I guarantee you will love all the main characters by the end of this show. It is definitely a Top Notch anime.

I thought the story was very well thought out, it got confusing at some points, but in all I still loved it. The animation was amazing and the music suited the scenes perfectly.
