Kanon

Kanon tv Review

When his parents are transferred overseas, Yuuichi Aizawa is forced to move in with his cousin, Nayuki, whom he hasn't seen for 7 years. All his memories of the time he had spent there in the past have faded, but with a series of encounters starting on the first day, his memories slowly start returning... along with the reason he lost them in the first place.

Synopsis: shadowfoxza.

Story & Characters

This is a review of the Kanon 2002

A grown up boy returns to a town he left seven years ago, but upon arriving, he finds he doesn't remember anything from his time long ago. The only thing he remembers is his cousin's name. Nobody else and none of the fun or sad times he experienced. Kanon is truly one of the best told stories out there. Throughout the story, the characters are introduced well and the story moves smoothly.

The characters themselves are quite amazing, and every person, no matter how insignificant, seemed to affect the plot. The character personalities are defined well and realistically that you can almost find the real-life counterpart. Nayuki for example is one of those characters. She is a main character. Throughout the story, her personal feelings are depicted well. You can almost feel what she is feeling. The characters are revealed slowly enough so that the plot still moves slowly and so that you have the time to feel the developing relationships within the anime.

The character interactions are also very realistic. The way the characters meet each other, the way they talk to each other, and all of those other things that happen between people, are defined well in each character, making them seem even more real. Even a character like Ayu is just so real and there that you can feel as if the character was talking to you when she talks to other characters.

Also, as the story goes on, you can see a growth in the characters, physically and emotionally. For example, Nayuki starts off as a kind and quiet little girl, and ends the series as a mature almost adult person (with an adult-ish) figure too. Even more addition to the realistic feeling of the characters.

I'll give the story a ten. Truly one of the most original things I've seen for a while. Kanon is really a work of art story-wise.

Art

First of all, character design. Every character is made well, and, disregarding some hair colors (Nayuki's blue hair), very realistically. The mothers actually look like the mothers of their child, sisters look like sisters, etc. etc. Each character is drawn somewhat uniquely, but still fitting together in one place, so that each character stands out in the overall story. The backgrounds were also painted in such a way as to not distract from the characters, but also have their own purpose for being there. For example, the school background really looks like a school, with its soft plain colors usually in shadow, giving the feeling of a school when a scene is done there.

The big eyes worked well. I have to admit, the faces seemed a little disproportional (the mouth was placed a bit too high, the eyes a bit too far apart), but it didn't detract too much from conveying emotion for the story to go on. The ridiculously tiny mouths did prevent some characters from showing that they were mad when they were yelling, but rarely did you see any of the characters get mad anyway. The overall style fit with the series as well as the overall genre of anime. As mentioned, the way the characters are drawn made for great display of emotion. The characters were drawn proportionately, and barely any (if any) anime emotions were used (excluding the teary eyes).

Overall, everything was done well. The style, the coloring, the backgrounds, they all flowed together to create this masterpiece we all know as Kanon.

Sound

Sounds could have been better. There weren't many sound effects used, so not much to review about that. Any sound effects that were used were a bit exaggerated (IE the swinging of a sword). Whenever sound effects were used, it was during a very dramatic moment, so they were used well. Not much else to be said about sound effects.

The soundtrack for Kanon was amazing. Some of the best songs I've heard recently. All of the music was nice and soft and really fit the mood whenever they were played. The song "Kaze no Tadoritsuku Bashyo" (The Place where the Wind arrives) which was played in the last episode to end the series worked well, providing one of the best anime series endings I have ever seen. Whenever a sad moment would arise in the series, a soft sort of music box version of "Last Regrets" would play, with the dialogue over it, creating a great atmosphere of sadness. Although, throughout the series, whenever background music was played, it was a little too soft and quiet in my opinion.

Now, for voice acting, I think it could have been better near the beginning of the series. For example, in the very first scene, Nayuki arrives late, and realizes that she was reading the time wrong. When she says "Whoa, I'm surprised. I thought I still had an hour", I didn't feel too much feeling put into that line. I must admit, it was fun to hear Nayuki talk, but it could have been better. Throughout the series though, the voice actors seemed to get better. You can really feel the sadness in Nayuki's voice when she is crying near the end (I won't say why). The voice actors were selected well. Each character's voice matched their personality and change in personality as the story developed.

Sounds for this series were decent. As mentioned, it could have been better, but not so much better as it was already amazing.

Presentation

There were happy times and sad times throughout the series. There were times where you could cry (I know I did) and times when you can laugh with (or at) the characters. There were times when you wish you could reach into the screen and hug the character for whatever reasons (almost broke the screen like that). Kanon overall was very fun to watch. I would watch over and over if I had the chance, but unfortunately, I don't have enough time. The whole story was told very well, one of the best story-tellings I've ever seen anywhere. The story was well paced and plotted out through 13 episodes. I was kind of disappointed that the story was only 13 episodes. Kanon has the potential to be an absolutely amazing 26 episode series. With all of the fantastic character, amazing developing relationships and personalities, and overall story, Kanon is truly a work of art to be enjoyed, a masterpiece.

    Hmph!
Lol, you've ranked this story extremely high from which I've expected someone would.
I will not say which ranking I give to this series (low), but, even as a writer, I've tried to watch this anime VERY WELL, but in the end, it just annoyed me.
DAMN, Ayu did never have to come back. The development is just annoying. I only agree, Nayuki was the best character in the anime.
I rather the game a lot more than the anime.
Another example of a magnificent game which anime just didn't do it, To heart 2.

I'd have to disagree with the above. It's a fairly old anime and they did the best they could with what was avaliable. Most people would agree with me that it was an emotional rollercoaster ride and that once you hit the last few episodes, it makes you shed a tear for what happens to these characters. If you played the game before you watch it, maybe you do have something to be disappoointed about, if not... there shouldn't really be anything to say. I personally found the overcute character designs annoying but once I got past that, it was absolutely one of the best animes I've seen.

    Please hear it.
Japanese animation is being plagiarized by some South Koreans.
    I love Japanese animation.
Therefore, I want to defend Japanese animation.
