Tenchi Muyo

Tenchi Muyo ova Review

Tenchi Masaki encounters a number of alien girls, who take residence at his house. The girls include Ryoko, a powerful and sexy space pirate; Ayeka, a modest and somewhat snobby princess from the planet of Jurai; Sasami, Ayeka's cute and helpful younger sister; Mihoshi, a bumbling Galaxy Police detective; Washu, a goddess and scientific genius; and Ryo-Ohki, a cabbit (rabbit and cat) who transforms into Ryoko's spaceship. These women turn Tenchi's life upside-down and take him on a number of adventures which help to reveal the boy's here-to-unknown powers.

Story & Playability

The story is pretty straight forward, a high school kid named Tenchi Masaki has after several years, aquired a key to unlock a forbidden grave of a demon, later to be Ryoko (Hooray Ryoko!) his first encounter with her is at his school and she needs him due to the fact that she requires jems from a sword earlier aquired at the grave. The jewels themselves are a constant feind (in a good way) to the story and as time progresses Tenchi meets other women, Ayeka and Sasami of the Jurai holy family (different planet, their legendary spaceships are basically all that come up), Washu a super genius professor (yeah its all there, but she is awesome too, and turns out to be Ryoko's mother, technically creator, but with genetics and all its more of a motherly thing blah blah blah, but she still rocks), Mihoshi (a less than average police detective for the galaxy hence the name of "Galaxy Police") and several others I am too lazy and absorbed in this series to explain (watch it and you will know, or not your choice).

Graphics

The anime in this series is incredible during the first oav! It was rather original and the characters were amazing, often I wonder who I like better (oh right like anyone is reading this, please... like anyone cares that much to read this) Washu with that insane flowing pink hair, or Ryoko with her shorter spike pale blue hair(what? I like spiked hair it looks good, there you made me say it) then you have eyes and the body design, well I cant say much more before I reveal my extreme oppinion on this show but rest assured it has caught my attention above all other anime! This series was also introduced during an increased influence of anime (in the 90's yeah the good ol days) and introduced several ideas that really made the veiwer notice two things 1: you can put a good body on anyone, but that is irrelevant without idiosyncratic features (i.e. Tenchi's little ponytail thing, Ryoko's wonderful yellow eyes, yea I went there, and Washu's beautiful flowing yet spiked pink hair, as well as ayeka's purple eyes and hair, rather creative and wonderful and (place overly positive adjecive here) form of animation and this isnt the only series I've seen for those of you (pretty much everyone) who think this is my only show its not!

Sound

Whoa... didnt even prepare for this... but okay. The voicing in english is as
Tenchi:Good
Ryoko:Great
Ayeka:Mediocre
Mihoshi:Good, a little screechy at times
Washu: Horrible (sorry Washu, but that voice isnt you)
And what of its Aisian founder? (duh)
Tenchi:Great
Ryoko:Perfect
Ayeka:Great (as much as I hate to admit it)
Mihoshi:Great (much better, but remember who she is, and how she speaks)
Washu: Perfect (ahhhh.... thats more like it now I can sleep at night Japan has better vocals)
aside from that the musicians had multiple themes for different instances which I say augmented the veiwing experience and created infinite solutions the the auditory alcorythims that humans create. However, the veiwer often found sounds that were also used in several instances that conveyed messages far better than leaving the screen entirely and fading into another scene. All things aside it had great sound potential but the voices (english at least) really dragged it down making it almost painful.

Fun

First of this show is very very hot. There, you made me say it, this show is sexy (okay I'm done with that no more detail, it is self explanatory... please!). Next it is hilarious, the constant character controversies spice up the series constantly, and is rather entertiaining on its own. The story was direct, but the plot was not (or am I confusing myself oh well) it was rather evasive and allowed for a nice veiwing experience as well as the initiative not to give the entire story away and make a repetive show (as I have seen on some of today's anime Aaach*naruto*ooo excuse me). I had a great time watching this and I still do! The problem is it was unable to be fully aired on TV so many people dont know what it is, so I weep for the next generation who may never be blessed with such a wonderful experience. You know give me input, nobody is seemingly on anymore... cmon.

I give the series 10/10. I really like how the characters was done. I also like the movies too. I wish Ryoko and Tenchi got married though.

For some reason I like Aeka a lot more lately. I don't know why, but I'm really starting to like her character.

Hey, no shame in it... I just have my preferences (ch- I thought nobody would even read this...) thanks for the posts!

  4. AyrtonSenna Jul 08, 2006

No problem. Tenchi Muyo is one of my favorite anime of all time. No doubt. :)

  5. Leosam096 Jul 08, 2006

I used to watch Tenchi Muyo a long long time ago, and still i find it pretty good. :)

Tenchi is just one of those series I will always enjoy.

I remember coming back home everyday from my sophomore year of high school to watch it on Toonami back in the day. Those were good times. I'm glad I now have the DVDs though so I can relive those memories anytime I want!

I also have the Laserdiscs of Tenchi Universe. :)

I can't argue with you on this. That anime series is the whole damn show.

You know reading these gives me a feeling that maybe there is a hope for the future for good anime, because seeing todays generation, and as stated before, due to toonami's ignorance, generations will be unable to see this masterpiece.
Can anyone answer me this though: why not put Tenchi on adult swim like they used to?

Haha I guess I just like to post on my own thread *lamenting on insanity* At this point after watching a buttload of more anime... this series looks better and better. Again (even though this is a shot in the dark, speaking to myself), thank you all for reading this and posting.

Now, I'd like to say, classics are good, old Animes like Tenchi, are good, but wouldn't say all those 10's.
You seemed like you went through this in like 5 minutes. I agree with the sound rating, but the fact that Tenchi Muyo wasn't THAT good.

I can't say I haven't done "All or almost all 10's" before, but I did so on Newly made ones in the recent years, which had better story to it, style, animation, sound, etc.
I agree it's good, but not a 9.5 Overall good.

I agree on this rating though.

I completely agree. I re-watched the series and i just finished it yesterday. Everything is perfect in this anime.(except for Washu's voice. sadly i agree with you on that one.) The story is refreshing and always fun, it one of the few that i can watch again and again.
