Plot Synopsis

Benoit wrote:

The story is all about a notorious boy whose name is Yusuke Urameshi who dies saving a boy's life in a car accident. Despite Yusuke's punk-attitude, he has a heart of gold which prompted Botan (a beautiful girl who happens to be the grim reaper) and Koenma (the guy who decides who goes to heaven or hell) to give him a second chance in life. Being alive once again, Yusuke discovers that he possesses spiritual powers. This power given by Koenma is known as the spirit gun, which Yusuke can use with his right finger to fire powerful energy blasts. Yusuke also discovers that there is a spirit world, which is why Koenma dubs him as the spirit detective to eradicate any evil that disturbs the balance between the human world and the spirit world. Together with Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei, Yusuke (along with his new powers) must destroy anything that threatens not only mankind, but also demonkind.

Story & Characters

I'm surprised no review has been written on such a great anime like YYH so I decided to write one. XD
The whole YYH series is in sagas, mainly the Spirit Detective Saga, the Dark Tournament Saga, the Chapter Black Saga, and the Saga of the Three Kings.

To me, Spirit Detective Saga is pretty normal, because it's just like your average shounen style plot. The main characters are not really likable at the beginning as well. Yusuke was a feed-up-with-life sort of character you can find anywhere else. Kuwabara...well...was not likeable even at the end of the series. Kurama's powers were much consealed at the beginning so there isn't much to see. Hiei was plain irritating with his evil smiles and ugly eyes all over his green body.

However, the Dark Tournament was where the story (and the characters) really begins to pick up. The plot involves much of fighting (duh. it's a tournament.), however, the producer managed to make each episode interesting to watch. Each episode, although featuring the same thing (fighting against an opponent and see who wins), varies in its own way. The opponents the main characters had to fight against were very memorable. They each has their own reason to fight, and methods of fighting also becomes more interesting as the tournament proceeds to a more crucial stage. The main characters grew to be more likable. Yusuke finds his reason to fight, Kuwabara become stronger, Kurama perfermed really well (you will soon realised how smart he is), and more about Hiei's past is revealed, not to forget his powerful Black Dragon Hell Fire (sounds so stupid when translated to english =( ).

As the story proceeds on the the third saga, the very important issues YYH explores becomes more obvious. We have the bad guy, Sensui, planning to do really bad things to human world (opening up the door to demon world), and our heroes are going to stop him no matter what it takes. When fighting against Sensui, the main characters become a lot stronger. Yusuke is discovered to be a demon. Hiei and Kurama slowly regains their powers as they reached the demon world. The ending is as suspected (good reign over bad). However, Sensui's reason for destroying the human world leaves us to ponder about if there is really a distinct line between good and bad. Even though demons are seen to be bad, human can actually behaved in a more inhuman way than a demon.

The Three Kings saga mainly took place in the demon world, as Yusuke, Hiei, and Kurama finds themselves to be the second best fighter in each kingdom. A crisis rose as Yusuke's father (Raizen) dies. However problem was quickly solved by Yusuke in his own unique way of doing things. We also got to see the real Kurama as his intelligence shows fully. Hiei's past is revealed (I love it!! XD), and we got to understand a lot more about him. The ending is a happy one, where everyone's problems are solved. XD

The best thing about YYH is not its plot (there are a lot more interesting plots out there) but the characters. Every single character in YYH is very well develped, whether he is a main character or not. You will sure to find one that you like at the end of the series. For me, well, I love every single one of them XD.

Art

YYH anime is made a long time ago, so the artwork might not be good as the recently made ones (for eg, Last Exile). To be honest, the DVD I watched is rather pixelated. Can't expect too much, though -.-

I guess the main characters have pretty appealing looks. Countless fans of YYH falls in love with Kurama (oh his rose oh his hair). The rest falls in love with Hiei and Yusuke ( my personal love XD). erm..all except Kuwabara. Poor guy... But anyway, I thought that the designs of their eyes are very good. Kurama has got deep, charming green eyes, Yusuke's are filled with energy and ready to ignite at all times. Hiei's eyes have this evil shape...that you will fall in love with.

Each character have their own unique features. Hiei's shortness, Kurama's long hair, Kuwabara's hairstyle, Yusuke's...attitude XD

The other characters are well designed to suite their personality as well. Love the pointy ears of Jin XD

Sound

Opening and ending songs of YYH are all very nice, and the opening song (Smile Bomb) captures the energy of the action scenes very well. I never get bored listening to YYH songs XD.
Some of the songs are sang by the characters themselves (as in, the person who dub them), and its simply fantastic to hear Yusuke singing songs XD.

Voicing is good. The voices really suite the characters very well. I especially love Hiei's voice..so sexy! XD Hiei is my baby!! (*gets carried away*)

For the background music...honestly speaking I don't really like it..especially during sad moments they will have this aweful music behind that spoils the entire mood. Oh well... -.-

Presentation

YYH is a very enjoyable series.
The characters are the best thing in YYH, they are all very three-dimentional, they all have their own stories and tears and laughter.

Even though YYH is a shonen anime, there is love elements as well. The love in YYH is certainly not skin-deep. It is long lasting and very touching. I especially love Hiei and Makuro's relationship.

The relationship between characters are complex, and realistic. For eg, the love-hate between Hiei and Kuwabara, the friendship between Hiei and Kurama, the relationship between Genkai and Toguro, and so on and so on.

I would recommend this series to anyone who like action and realistic characters and interesting plot XD

My second review!
Hope more people will give YYH a try after reading my review XD

yuyu is one of the best anime ever :D
*love toguro* :D
good review, but i give YYH a 9+ ^^
excellent anime!

hahaha. great review. i love the fact that there is some humor in here a long with point-blank truths. =D yeah kuwabara does suck, doesnt he? i think he is rather stupid but oh well. kurama would have to be my love in this series. yes i am one of those girl/people that are madly in love with kurama. he's just so sweet in his human form and in the demon form he is a thief. completely awesome in my opinion. thats why i like him so. that and he is rather charming.

go. now to the point. i like how you have written this review. there is enough information to keep a person interested but not so much as to spoil the how series. kudos to you for that. but what i like most is the analysis of the show. it makes me think and i love it when someone makes me think. i havent every really though about the show before until now. i just watched it but now i have to think back and say you have a point with that statement. more kudos to you, darling.

Nice review!
Great analysis!

I would have to agree with the simple, direct truths. 100% on the character analysis.
Although, as a fan of the series, you could have analyzed the fights more (it is a Fighting anime in the end), and how the characters' different figthing styles reflect each of their personalities.

I would give YYH at least a 9 because even though its slightly older, it has that classic feel and style to it. It's also a landmark anime in the fighting genre.

REI GUN!

Great review! Love the analysis on the characters. Yu Yu Hakusho still rox! i would have given it a 9. ^^

yu yu hakusho is still one of my favorite animes. from the first time i saw yusuke sitting upside down looking at his body i was hooked. also like you said even someone who isn't the main character is well developed like the teacher that worries about yusuke.

yay! so glad that so many people love YYH like I do XD looks like i have improved from my first review, so thank you everyone for ur compliments XDXD I didnt include the fights because I thought that would make the review seem too detailed.
erm as for the rating I have thought about it again and I decided to make it higher because YYH deserves it. Yes, it deserves to get a 10 for character and plot XD

Yuyu Hakusho is one of my favorite animes. This anime is the perfect action type, unlike DBZ (dragonball z) which only has action, no story or character info and even the action scenes suck. On the other hand YYH has all that and the fighting scenes are alot better than DBZ. YYH has a good story line too it as well which builds on the interest.

Whoa go easy on those faces. Maybe I'm a bit more proper when it comes to review writing and reading, but that just proves to be more distracting, almost as if you are fishing for a response instead of letting the writing do the work for you. Not a bad writer overall, but the rantings should be toned somewhat (in my opinion of course).

great review! makes me want to watch yu yu hakusho all over again! :D

yu yu hakusho is one of the best animes ever.

kurama is my absolute favorite. even though yusuke is a thousand times stronger and people call him gay, i still love him.

my favorite girl is keiko. she's like the perfect girl, yusuke's total opposite, which is why they are perfect for each other.

Yu Yu Hakushu is one of the best anime ever made. It'll rate a ten with me forever. No matter how much cooler the new anime may become.

I'll admit, I haven't watched YYH as of yet, because the art was a huge turn off for me. I just hate bad art. But, after reading this, I think I'll give a few episodes a try...

I've got to say at this point and time the art of Yuu Yuu Hakusho is okay. Considering the fact it was made around a decade and a half ago. I liked the story, as a matter of fact YYH is like a older version of Bleach.

Yu Yu Hakusho is my absolute favorite anime. I know that they have much better animes out now and the clothes are old-fashioned (the one thing i dont like about yu yu hakusho) but i'll always love this anime no matter what people say.

I love yu yu hakusho, it has great characters especially hiei and kurama, they are great and also beautiful, but I have a question, what is the title of the sad background music and where can I find it? I have the OST 1 and 2 but it seem not to be there, how many more CD:s are there and where can I find THEM? PLEASE HELP ME!

I like YYH ... it's one of my favorite. The story is complicated but fun. I love all character that have their unique. Thanks for your review ^^

I am looking for that sad backgroundmusic too but I can't find it anywhere XD"
Please, if anyone knows what this music is named or where I can get it from tell me...
