Plot Synopsis

No plot synopsis or other information available for DearS

Story & Characters

The story starts off with an alien encounter...in a bush...and the alien turns out to be a chick with nothing but a brown-ish sheet covering her body. Being the somewhat nice guy that he is, Takeya decides to try to help the girl. Things get pretty awkward from here as the story advances.

The story unfolds nicely. Most of the setting seems to be at a school surrounding, which works fine, seeing as the characters are all in high school. DearS is a story of a guy and his slave, and this is pretty much what it is. Just think Chobits, but with the leading female having less clothes on that Chii does (and that’s saying something). The plot is basically just the main character’s developing relationship with this alien. And it’s portrayed very interestingly.

Takeya’s character personality is very realistic. He has friends, he has family, he has enemies, he has perverted friends, and he has an alien slave girl. Pretty normal, huh? His interaction with other characters is amazing throughout the series. The way he talks to others, the way he acts around the others, and the way he treats others is very real. He’s the hero, but he doesn’t win every battle, which is part of what makes his character so real.

Ren, the alien slave girl, on the other hand, is one of the least realistic characters I can think of. Disregarding the fact that she is an alien, the disproportionately GIGANTIC boobs already throw off the reality of the character. Yet, her personality brings some of that reality back. She’s a sweet girl who will help only her master unless told to help someone else. It may not seems so real, but it’s surprisingly more real that most would think.

Enough about the characters. Watch the anime, you’ll see for yourself all that is described above. A little warning though, the teacher character is very creepy (note that I am easily crept out).

Art

I would say the artwork is fine. It flows pretty well with the series, but the chibi style that keeps popping in and out is overused. I think the story telling could have been better if the chibis weren’t used so much.

In the character design area, I would give it a really high ranking, at least, for the DearS. Takeya and all of the other high school characters just had the usual uniform, and outside of school, they usually have very simplistic clothing on. As for the DearS characters (Ren, Miu, etc.), they each had their unique character designs. In their DearS costumes, the characters are really eye-popping and stand out really well. Each DearS has her (his?) individual costume. It’s really tight and skimpy and reveals too much. Then, when they’re not in DearS costume, the characters still stand out pretty well. Ren’s clothing for example is very colorful.

The characters stand out on the background really well, which is good. It sets them apart from the unimportant things in the story. The backgrounds are painted well, but they colors used are very bland in my opinion, and they sort of blend into each other.

All in all, everything flows with the story telling and plot as the advances. It adds a lot of fun stuff to watch as you go through the anime.

Sound

The soundtrack is really interesting. The theme song first of all is very catchy and gets stuck in your head, even if you can’t really understand the lyrics very well. It fits really well with the overall theme of the anime. The ending theme, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to have the same flow to the anime as the intro theme does. The ending theme is very…popping…It sounds fun to dance to. In fact, go ahead and dance to it, the characters onscreen are!

The background music through the series isn’t bad. It works better with the situation than the animation does most of the time. It’s not the most emotionally provoking music, but it still has that feel to it. There is the sad music, the happy music, and the teacher’s theme. DearS was meant to be a comedy, so there isn’t much crying. There are serious parts, where the music would turn all solemn an whatnot, but those parts lasted maybe a minute before the chibis come in.

There were sound effects, but I didn’t enjoy them as much. They worked, were really high quality, and were timed well, but a lot of the anime would have probably worked without the sound effects (I say a lot because I exclude the chase scene).

Not more much to say about the sounds. Overall, if you were going to buy the DearS OST or and of the singles, I would say, go for it. It’s totally worth it.

Presentation

All in all, DearS was a very enjoyable anime. I liked it a lot, and not because of the artwork. The story was hilarious, the characters were awesome, and the whole thing seemed like it might happen in real life (only might happen). I could watch DearS over and over again, but then I’d get tired of it.

The story was told well, but I think it could have been better. It was definitely interesting to watch the character relationships develop, and to see all of the DearS with their skimpy costumes on!

And so, with that, I end my review, leaving you this piece of advice: Beware the teacher. She is VERY creepy *goes to hid in corner*
