Elfen Lied tv Review

The Diclonius, a mutated homo sapien that is said to be selected by God and will eventually become the destruction of mankind, possesses two horns in their heads, and has a "sixth sense" which gives it telekinetic abilities. Due to this dangerous power, they have been captured and isolated in laboratories by the government. Lucy, a young and psychotic Diclonius, manages to break free of her confines and brutally murder most of the guards in the laboratory, only to get shot in the head as she makes her escape. She survives and manages to drift along to a beach, where two teenagers named Kouta and Yuka discovers her. Having lost her memories, she was named after the only thing that she can now say, "Nyuu," and the two allow her to stay at Kouta's home. However, it appears that the evil "Lucy" is not dead just yet...

Story & Characters

First I must make this clear-Elfien Lied is an anime with a lot of blood spurting and limbs and heads falling aprt in a realistic way so for those who can't take violence- don't watch the anime and the review will probably be not much of a use for you, but you can still read it for the sake of it.Now for those who like, has the gut for violence,Elfien Lied is great(especially for those who like violence). Any way the story is great although it could be longer and more obvious in the ending - because even in the end I have no idea what exactly happens The plot really has things hidden in the past that is hinted throughout and only given in the last few episodes-the truth of the event is given through a flashback that is done well-and through it we learn more about the thinking of Lucy as it is her flashback.

The characters -what can I say they are all very realistic and we can sympathise with all of them especially Lucy.

Kouta and Lucy are the main focus of the story, especially Lucy with her flashback.
Kouta-he has dark parts in the past that he has forgotten willingly-

Lucy- she is a very tragic person and her hatred of human is justifiable- She was bullied in cruel ways by her peers and therefore she hates people. And despite all that , we can see she is really not a bad person - she loves animals -it is only human she hates.

And we even learn something from this anime- do not let your past influence your future.

I have to admit there is a character left out of this anime- he is the voice of reasoning and justice although from his past we learn he pursued in the wrong belief. And he makes up for this by working in the organisation( that has a opposite goal to what it proposes-no surprise there)

His daughter- also a new specie of human -she also has a sadness in her story- being left by her father to the organisation because of his own sense of guilt.

What can I say, just as we really aren't all white or black- the characters are just that-realistic. And really we get a feel for all of them. we can't say what they pursue are wrong- although in my opinion Lucy is pursuing in the wrong thing- she is only thinking of herself when killing and does not see people as kind at all- her thoughts has been deranged by her past experience of people. We can only feel sorry for her.

Art

The art is great- it really is full of dark colour throughout of the play. The blood and the limbs flying apart is really realistic(well as realistic as it get in anime)- a normal person would feel their inside lurch at the sights.

Rating: 10

Sound

The sound is not pleasant light melody as far as I can hear. The op is pretty unique- surrealistic-one can call it. The Ep-well I can't really remember. Anyway with or without the sound, the mood is captured throughout the anime. Honestly how can you pay attention to the sound when there is so much violence or brilliant graphic.

Rating: 8

Presentation

Enjoyability - the anime to be honest is memoriable and gives you a strong feeling after watching it but that feeling is probably not enjoyability-yes for those who would read this review- there is a sense of astonishment and even enjoyment when one watch the violent beheading, limb amputation of the woman and children and generally the people in the anime, but that really depends on the characteristics of those watching the anime- some feel sick at the sight of blood but I really hope those who have read up to here to be those who enjoy watching violent scenes.

But overall even for those who enjoy the violence and would just laugh. One will feel pretty depressed afterward normally.

I rememeber that I liked this anime when I saw it, but I think it was because it was so different compared to what I had seen before. I can't see any reason to give it a 10 in any of the parts, especially the art part. I would actually give it a 6 there, since I thought the characters looked kind of flat in their faces. But the flow in it was good, and I really liked the surroundings and backgrounds.

Don't get me wrong, but your review doesn't really say much... What I understood was that: a- Elfen Lied has plenty of [realistic-looking] violence, and you're a person that clearly enjoys violence very much, b- the art is OK, c- the sound isn't such a big deal, and d- you've got a long way to go until actually writing a real review. Here are a few hints:

    - Don't let your personal opinions interfere too much and don't repeat things (you say about 5 or 6 times that this anime is violent and is for those who enjoy violence)
    - State your opinions clearly and concisely, without any unnecessary complications
    - Focus on the sections of the review equally (you can't write that much in 'Story' and then have only a phrase or two in the 'Art' and 'Sound' sections, because they contribute just as much to an anime) and always argument your opinions solidly.

I hope I didn't upset you... I just want to help. Ja ne!

I have a few comments about this (I'm not much of a reviewer so don't take my comments so serious, just want to share some opinions),but before that I should tell my own comment about Elfen Lied first, aren't I ?
(And English is not my native language, so you might need a little effort to understand what am I trying to say(sorry about that T_T).)
I love this anime, overall, it is very good. Like you already stated the story and characters' actions make sense and very realistic. But quite(or very) violent ,thought.
The art is good and also the voice.
The presentation - yep very enjoyable (if u don't limbs, legs, heads and more of that flying around).
So now, my comments, as much as my memory serves this anime is R-15 rated, you might need to stated about this a little.
I think you value the reality about human parts too much, don't get me wrong , the art is good as I already mentioned but I will give it 9 coz sometimes I feel strange about characters' motions (well, might be only me). So, like Odeena already said, don't let your personal opinion interfere too much.

That's all. Hope they help. C ya later.

ok a friend of mine at school showed me the first episode of this show and i was hooked. i watched the entire series and i was captivated by the styles that the artist introduced. the opening song "Lillium" is in, i do believe, Latin and the surreal pictures as you called it are an old form of art that came to be in germany in the 1800's. this anime has a few disturbing parts, no not the blood the limbs being torn off or the amputations, but parts that unless you have something seriously wronge with you, you will not enjoy but they take the story along. i would give the music a 10 because i for one did not pay to close of attention to the violence i was completely captivated by the background sounds. i would give the art a 10 because they made kamakura, what it actually looks like down to the grafitti, into an anime scene so it made everything feel all the more real. so yes it was a good anime and i agree for the most part with your review but you missed a few things. but what do i know i may be completely biased but maybe not. dont take my words to seriously ok.

i loved it especially all of the gorey scenes.... overall i thought it was a great anime.

Actually the art in the intro is in the style of Gustav Klimt, a German painter from the early 20th Century. The title (Elfen Lied) is a reference to a german song, "Elfen Lied" by Hugo Wolf; the intro is indeed in Latin.

I loved this anime, but I have to say that your review doesn't really do it justice. I think you should maybe flesh out the review a little more with details and try and be a bit more clear.
For my own comments on it, I would say that ignoring the violence and nudity, it remains an amazing story about memory and the cruelty of human nature.

I thought this anime is the best anime i've watched so far, mainly because of the story behind this. The symbolism and hidden story behind what is actually shown in the anime makes it extremely captivating to the mind. And the theme of loniness really relates to many of us and it's like a breath of fresh air when i saw how much this supposed "evil" Lucy has to go thru. I'm glad this wasn't some idiotic anime where the evil character is bad for no apparent reason.
Although i'm not every satisfied with the using Gustav Klimt's pictures ( or some of them) because his art is mostly about erotism, which kinda dissapointed me when i found out....otherwise, the art was excellent.

Yes, you yourself stated that you didn't understand parts of the anime. When writing a review, essay, or anything of that sort, always be sure of yourself. If you didn't understand something, don't talk about it.

I thought that the sound part was great, so I don't know why you downed it (comparing to your ratings for the other sections of course). They did a good job co-ordinating the music, especially for the last episode and they didn't make the mistake of ruining a dramatic anime with "fight music" which is a horrible thing to do. Though I would not have given it a full mark for the sheer contrast (not good) between the opening and ending theme.

And you also have to understand, this anime is not all about gore. Gore actually plays a small part in this anime compared te the mystery, drama, and the oh-so-cute comedy role of nyuu = )

  12. wald89 May 27, 2006

I agree on everything but the blood.

  13. lacusxxclyne Jun 06, 2006

yup your review is somewhat missing stuff and not that clear.... when you want to give people review, make sure you have every doubts that you have clarified you dont want people to end up being unsure you want people to love it...

  14. gabysango2011 Jul 14, 2006

yeah...it's good....i gives you a lot of information about it...

  15. mav3rick Aug 14, 2006

this was a good anime i wont argue, but im glad not all anime is like it, it was over excessively using blood and gore, probably the most negative anime i've seen to date, it left me with a sick feeling in my stomach, so tragic and sad basically the entire way through.

but i cant argue that the story and animation where great so it was good.

*note* i also was confused as to how the invisible arms were cutting up people like knives? judo chop maybe?

  16. koeziekoo Sep 07, 2006

elfen lied oh elfen lied......*sings a tune*
so bloody, all the time, but also lank sad
lucy's NYUUUU noise gets a bit much after a while
    nice review

  17. Rivanne Jul 26, 2007

Hmm... th'x for the review, but I think you just see this great anime from perspective of 'Gore and Bloddy'. Sorry, but I really disagree with you on that. Yes, at some of first episode, we only see that. But as the story develop, the best part of this anime is about the story itself. Lucy, Nana, Miyu, all have some wound because of their past. And Kouta is the one who tied them, and together they all try to heal each of their wounds. Lucy's past is the best part of this anime, in my personal opinion.
