Shingetsutan Tsukihime

Shingetsutan Tsukihime tv Review

Shiki Tohno was severely injured in a large accident in his childhood. After miraculously surviving the event, he was sent away from the family to recuperate. As a result of the injury, he is now able to see "life lines" on objects and people which, when cut, will destroy them.

After years away from home, Shiki moves back following the death of the head of the Tohno family. While walking home from school, he meets a beautiful woman whom he is inexplicably drawn to kill. At firs he thinks her murder was all just a nightmare - until she reappears in front of him.

It turns out the woman is Arcueid Brunestud, and a vampire princess! She promptly recruits Shiki afterwards to help fight Roa, the antagonist vampire currently on a killing spree.

Story & Characters

Boy meets vampire woman. Boy learns to deal with his troublechildhood with the relationship developed wtih woman, etc etc. The story itself is very simplistic. However, I thought that they did a good job of building up some suspenseful as well as confusing plot elements. For example, all throughout I didn't know about Shiki's sister's role.. was she possessed? what is she? The whole family has a huge mystery that made this anime very provocating to continue. However, the way they made such a mystery without ever touching upon many of the elements is annoying in my eyes, so in the end the story is just a little bit above average.

The whole deal with Roa is not developed very well, either. So that kind of hurts those who want to have a sense of satisfaction at the end of their anime watchings.

They left a lot of things out in character development. I kind of am unsure how to view it, since all the characters are so passive. At first, I thought everything was really sweet how Arcuied and Shiki managed to be like that to each other despite their cruel backgrounds, but then when I look back I thought it seemed really unrealistic the way things unfolded. In the end, I basically decided that there is nothing special about Shiki and it is Arcuied's attempt to be as un-Roa like as possible that allowed their relationship to develop like that. Shiki really is the whole "indecisive" type that you commonly see in animes, and so I guess he kind of sucks.

As for Ciel... I don't really feel anything from that character. She seems more to be a convenient figure, showing up in whatever form to help Shiki and Arcuied's relationship develop.

As for Shiki's sister... again she feels like something that helps give some light onto Shiki's past, but nothing else. Shiki's sister to Shiki is what Ciel is to Arcuied, just to help give more insight to character.

Anyway, I really liked Arcuied's nobility and gentleness

Art

The animation really lacks in movement. Although each scene is drawn beautifully and the details put into characters is nice, they are very static. There are relatively very few action scenes, so I guess there is no need for lots of movement. However, I do like the style and I think it deserves a Very Good score.

Sound

This anime relies on music to fulfill the silences... it also builds the environment. I don't really notice anything particularly special about it except for the fact that it makes the mood a bit depressing, and allows for a more melodramatic type tension. This is a large factor for enjoying this anime. Watching this on silent would kill this anime's enjoyment

Presentation

Shingetsutan Tsukihime is an anime with nearly perfect pacing. There is no moment where useless events happen, and all scenes - from happy to sad - develop the anime. Although I was a little disappointed by the way things ended, this anime is definitely worth watching during a rainy day, when you're stuck in the house and want to watch something that fits the weather around you.

My favorite aspect of this anime is the overall atmosphere and interactions between all the characters. They don't blatantly force ideals or feelings on you. They don't preach, they don't say anything philosophical, they don't burden you with heavy emotion - despite the onslaught of magical and fantasy events - the characters just live and you watch them live, and it feels so genuine to see everyone react and behave that way. Although the characters do seem dull and passive a lot of the time, I thought that made Arcuied's smile even brighter everytime she was with Shiki and this really warmed my heart.

One thing I disliked was how they left a lot of things to mystery. In the end, this anime is one about the start of a relationship between a vampire and a cursed boy, the feelings they build up, and then the final, all too sudden scene that seems a bit rushed. It is worth watching because I think the relationship they build is wonderful as well as the various fantasy elements they built the story on. However, do not expect anything deep and thoughtful -the mystery of the family is only par and seem to only further the relationship rather than be the focus point of the anime - DO expect a very serene and calming feeling after watching this anime.

I feel you didnt do justice to the story. For people who didnt or who havent watch the series, when they read this, they'll probably think its a boring anime. I mean, Shingetsutan Tsukihime's story plot is more than just like you said,

" Boy meets vampire woman. Boy learns to deal with his troublechildhood with the relationship developed wtih woman, etc etc"

But you're lucky there is a detailed Plot Synopsis there for people to read. I have to agree with you that the character development is kinda bad. What do you expect from a game-turned-anime? Furthermore, there are only 12 episodes so the most important things are forced to be squeezed in between episodes.

Plus, it tends to drag...like what u mention regarding the silence. Most of the episodes, the climax only happen a few minutes before the episode ends. Ouh, and i LOVE the opening song and ending...you didnt do justice to the "Sound" part of this review...which is really bad. I mean, to review is to have a larger scope aint it?

Not bad though for ur first review...there are some of ur personal opinions. But continue to work harder ne? Ganbare!

That would mean that you can only rate something if you are able to create something much better? If it was like that, only anime creators could review on other anime. That would exclude the fans.

I think your review is totally okay although you were to soft on the art. I mean, detailed characters don't save the static animation. You mentioned the lack of movement but a rating of 8/10 for the animation is way too high. I mean, what would series like FLCL, Air and so on get? A 15/10?
That's why the Tsukihime art - althouth its pretty look - only deserves a 5/10 rating.

i agree with u on some points there, about the characters being static, passive, the lack of real character development, the lack of good action...and the "all too sudden scene that seems a bit rushed"...

however, id like to say i was actually satisfied when it ended, at least they showed us something...apart from the usual monotonous events of vampire hunting, or slow interaction between the characters. the real plot, when it unfolded took me quite by surprise. even though they still didnt touch on some parts like the mysterious red haired woman whom shiki called 'teacher' and who gave him his glasses...

as for the art, yes, detailed but static. perfectly put. :)

Thank you for reviewing this anime. You've put into words a lot of the things that I felt when I finished watching it. I was left feeling vaguely unsatisfied about the whole, abrupt ending. Because it is short, I thought that I should feel more charitable about the lack of in-depth character development. Oh well, maybe I should hunt about for the game if I want to know more about the story and the background. (does it tell you more?)

Thanks for the comments everyone. I guess my way of rating animation is too simplistic, but to give a 5/10 still feels a little low. As for the storyline, at the heart of it - its about Shiki and Aruceid together , even though there may be more to it in the real game, that's what the anime actually focuses on.

As for knowing more about the anime: Supposedly the game has many different endings... and this anime touched upon one possible storyline. I'm not sure how accurate this is.

I admit I could have written a little more about each category, but I only remember the basic sense and more important plot points of this anime. So stuff like music really didn't stand out all that much. Sorry :/

i thought you could talk a little more about the story. but otherwise not bad. i really did like this anime as well.

  8. R0AR May 25, 2006

Actually, I just started to watch it myself... and I've only watched a few episodes... all i have to say is that it's really freaky and different twist than any anime I've ever watched but its not that bad... just a little freaky

Strange, I thought I had written a comment here... Guess I'll do it now instead.

Really good review, I can agree on all the points and the scores are right. The music was really fitting for the anime, setting a mood that suited the anime very well. The ending was actually a good ending, for the main story. The fact that many sidestories never were ended and many questions were left unanswered weren't that much of a problem in my eyes. One of my favourites.

I don't know about this review...
My first qualm is "Shingetsutan Tsukihime is an anime with nearly perfect pacing.". For a story line as in depth as the game, it seems EXTREMELY rushed. Because the anime was rushed, the story for both Ciel and Akiha were so excluded thaat their characters seem a bit lacking.
All of my other complaints are just stems from the rushed nature of this anime. And even though i believe that this anime deserves an overall score that is much higher, i would end up ranting if i went into full detail.

Well the story part is way~~ abbreviated but i think it's bascially all good.
I think Tsukihime deserves more than 5/10 harakiri-san! >=(

This anime is way too short to do justice to the original works by Typemoon. The art and songs are good but the story and character development are woefully inadequate in my opinion. Recommended to be watched but be prepared to be unsatisifed after finishing the anime. Read up the manga or visual novel storyline for better appreciation of the complexity and beauty of the Tsukihime storyline.
