Puni Puni Poemi ova Review

Random and demented, this OVA focuses on Poemi Watanabe, who lands on Earth riding a rainbow. Her ambition is to become a voice actress; most of the time, however, something gets in her way - even an alien invasion! Along with the Aasu sisters, Poemi must protect the Earth, get the boy she obsesses over to notice her, and become a voice actress - all in just two episodes!

Synopsis: pandemonium91

Story & Playability

The story is really random and hard to catch on to. It only makes sense somewhere near the end, and even then it's really REALLY random. A young girl wants to become a voice actress, aliens invade, she aquires the power of fish (yep, fish), and ends up saving the world. Pretty basic right? Like I mentioned, it's so random that you can't even tell what's going on. The characters are pretty well defined in their names, but when it comes to personality, I wouldn't say they're the most developed. If you didn't notice, the Aasu sister's names are number puns (hito(1), futa(2), mi(3), shi(4), itsu(5), mutsu(6), nana(7)) and it's ordered too, so it's easy to remember. Hitomi is the first child, Futaba is the second, etc etc. The aliens that come and invade are really strange. In fact, design-wise, you don't even want to stare at them for more than two seconds or your eyes will burn. If you haven't seen it yet, I'll let you watch it for yourself to see why. I think the most developed character is K, the main alien character; and even his story (and back-story) is really - oh what's the word... - random. The way the story progresses seems to work well. It starts slow, introducing the charaters, then goes super-high "Poemy-on-her-scooter" speed and brings it to the end in one big explosion. I'm amazed there weren't that many panty shots in this OVA. Way too many "balls" though.

Graphics

Big eyes, even bigger boobs. The colors are really bright, the outlines are really fine, I would say this identifies with anime. The characters are well designed. Each character has his or her own definitive feature about them, be it their hair, clothes (if they have any -ahem-), or...chest... The design K's parents could use some work though, but all of the other characters were well animated without sparing a detail. Even the static characters, or characters that were on screen for only half a second had their unique character design. The animation was really smooth, even the parts that were fast forwared flowed well. Hands didn't go from one part of the frame to another without some movement in between (most the time), characters didn't appear from nowhere, they came onto the screen, and the missle took it's full time to launch from the base and come back down on the people who launched it. Poemy's transformation sequence also worked well animation-wise. I'm not sure it was the most necessary thing though. The artwork for the box was really attractive too. It used vibrant colors, nice shading and toning, and featured many colorful characters. The flip cover shows a more dark Poemy, but still used that attravive character element. If the artwork and character designs of this anime were put into an anime that really needed it, we'd have a really good anime.

Sound

The soundtrack was okay, but I didn't really like it that much. The intro and ending themes were okay, the the transformation music was a little catchy, and other than that, the music just didn't work. The animation may have worked for certain moments, but the music definately didn't. The music was too fast or too slow, or didn't use the right instruments. The voice acting was done really well though. I don't think better voices could have been found (for either the Japanese or English versions). I have to say Poemy's voice actor is really talented if she can talk at a speed like that. The voices of the characters were really enjoyable and conveyed feeling when they talked as well as define that character. The music and voices did match the style of anime in the way they flowed with the anime. Not much else I could say about the sound of this anime.

Fun

The casing can be desribed as "wow-wow". Have you ever seen a more attractive box cover? It really catches your eye, almost draws your attention away from that "Anyone you can do, I can do better" DVD. The menu was really stright forward, only two episodes, and a language change. No extras, but it was still a good menu. The actual anime was really enjoyable. It was what I would say "hilarity in a bottle". I was laughing thoughout the whole thing, trying to catch every refrence made to any other anime. The whole magical girl thing is pretty obvious, but not presented plot-wise very well. And saving the world, well, it's just so cheesy it works, and it's presented in a such a funny way. The box says that it would be sure to offend you, and it wasn't kidding. So much echii-ness and strange sexual refrences was used. And yet, it's hard to pull yourself away. You'll just have to see it for yourself to believe it (or not believe it)
