Resident Evil 1 game Review

Story & Playability

The following review is for Resident Evil 4 for both Gamecube and Playstation 2. The scores will be based off of the Gamecube version ONLY, although I will make mention of both.

I would first like to say I hate Resident Evil. Every single Resident Evil game has just plain been boring. See a Zombie, run from it. Protect each precious bullet like it's your child. Find 15 key cards to get into a bathroom. I hate Resident Evil... until now.

Resident Evil 4, released in January of 2005 on the Nintendo Gamecube and June 2005 on Playstation 2 takes everything that in my humble opinion sucked about all previous RE games, and revamps them to make this series something it's never been... Fun! The basic story is simple. You play Leon (flashback to RE2 for those who played it). You have been tasked to recover the president's daughter who has been kidnapped. You wind up in a village which is far from normal. The first man you encounter, out of nowhere tries to kill you. Quite frankly anybody you run into what's your head on a pike. You have to now deal with waves of mindless villagers on your way to finding Ashley. When you do find her, you find out that both you and her have been injected with the very parasite that has all of the other villagers acting crazy. Now you have to not only escape, but find out how to get rid of it, find out the motives of the notorious Sadler and keep up with hoards of brutal villagers.

It is a fairly straightforward story, but for this genre, it works perfectly. Playing the previous Resident Evil games will help you with some of the characters, but even new people can love this game without any knowledge at all. The story doesn't matter too much, but it's pretty good for this type of game.

Graphics

Gamecube: This game looks fantastic. This is one of the most detailed games I've ever played. The clouds crawl through the sky, the leaves sway in the wind, the fire effects are probably the best to date on any system and so much more. You have the option to run or walk through the game; I ended up walking a lot just so I could take in the visual candy. It pulls everything out that the Gamecube can handle.

PS2: Simply put, not nearly as good as the GC. The cutscenes are taken directly from the Gamecube version, so there are no real changes there. The problem lies in that all the details are now left out. There is serious rainbowing when in dark rooms. Not only do the trees not sway, but many of the trees have been removed so as to not push the PS2 past it's limits. The environments are not as interactive as the GC as many of the things in the original version were destructible. It just feels like a lot of prerendered backgrounds. It is probably the best a PS2 can manage, and those who only play this version will probably find it looking quite good. Play both and you'll notice quite a difference.

Sound

Gamecube: Those of us who frequently play RPG's are used to every moment having some type of music to it. Whether it be dungeon crawling music, boss battle music or any other myriad of background noise, there is always something going on. Resident Evil 4 does not have that huge soundtrack. What it mostly depends on is ambient background sounds. You'll hear water cascading in the distance, the grunting and talking amongst villagers and sounds of doors creaking all around you. The game is meant to keep you in suspense so it uses sounds to give you that feeling of being all alone in this crazy world. When there is music in the background, you end up with just some plain old creepy sounds. You'll walk down a long hallway and just know that around the next corner awaits a living hell, just by the music. Then you'll be greeted by a decrepit villager lunging at you ready to kill. You don't need to buy a soundtrack for this game, but turn the lights off and turn on the surround sound and prepare for suspense.

PS2: All of the music and sounds remain intact for this version as well, the only difference is that the sounds are muffled. You don't get the crisp sound of someone rustling leaves nearby, so enemies have a much easier time sneaking up on you. Even gunshots sound as if you are firing through a pillow.

Fun

This game is fun... really fun. Instead of running from every Zombie, you put bullets in all of their heads. In fact that's the fun part. If you shoot someone in the head, they reel back holding their heads and you can run up and kick them. If you shoot them in the knee, they will drop down and you can run up and hit them with a suplex. If you shoot them in the crotch, well you get the point. Great part, a lot of those guys you just put down with a vicious head shot, drops ammo! So you can keep the pain train running smoothly and on time. Nothing like taking out huge waves of would-be killers with the swift justice of a shotgun to the chest and a grenade lying in wait behind them. Besides that, the puzzles aren't just collecting card keys and other annoyances. It will be simple slide puzzles or just having the one key that a boss drops. Nothing more, and never complicated. Exploration is very important to as there is treasure hiding all over the place, which you can sell and use to buy weapons off of the creepy dealer running around all over the place. If you aren't foaming at the mouth yet, this is also almost a 20 hour game. It has a new game+, so you can take your bitchin' weapons into another round and exact your revenge on those first villagers who owned you the first time around. And extras... oh this game's got extras. Want to see what Ada has been doing while you are accomplishing your mission, do it. Want to take the beast Krauser or everybody's favorite Albert Wesker and assault a hundred zombies in 3 minutes, do it. Want to do some side missions and unlock a rocket launcher with infinite ammo, guess what, do that too.

The PS2 version adds in more to the Ada missions and new weaponry for Leon, which is a nice add on. Not only that but it's slightly easier because they added in more save points, which are for wusses.

If you have a Gamecube, buy this game if you haven't already. If not, buy it for PS2. If you don't have either one, go buy one of those systems now. Otherwise I don't know what the hell you are reading this review for anyway. Simply put... PLAY THIS GAME! I'll be here all week.

RE4 ruined the series. I challenge anyone to prove me wrong with strong arguments.

Dude, this review sounds like it was written by another trigger happy-halo-loving teenager (no offense, I merely speak the truth).

Trigger happy-halo love teenager? Hardly so, in fact I can't stand Halo, but that's another discussion all together. I simply enjoyed this game because I found it much more fun than the other Resident Evils. I'm not a big fan of running around searching for card keys and slow sluggish controls. It seems to me that you are just a RE purist who just doesn't know how to accept change. To each their own, but personal attacks are rather low wouldn't you say?

in my opinion... the best game i've ever played. x) i think the graphics are the best i've ever seen and the controls are so easy to handle that it makes it fun to play. in the other re games i couldn't get used to the fixed camera angles and i just got put off...
i think if anything re4 has done the re series a favour. it's not just another zombie puzzle game... they were kinda getting boring. D:

and.. yeah it is fun! it's something i play over and over and not lose interest.

I was attacking your review. Besides, I thought you were into RPGs? And what are some of the charasteritics of an RPG? a deeper story, more complex gameplay, etc. Though this is survival horror, there's more substance in previous titles than mindless shooting, as in RE4. That's the game in a nutshell: mindless killing. But like you said, to each his own.

As I've said before, change is only good but only when its aim is improvement, instead of tearing the series apart and turning it into a mindless gore fest. Also, RE4 is no longer a survival horror title, it is an action game. I see you failed to mention that. In addition, I fail to see how dying and re-starting from a checkpoint presents a challenge.

    Anyone else?

Sound's like rslgto [/b[ needs to learn the definition bewteen opinion and fact. You're entitlted to your own opinions, but your attitude is totally uncalled for and immature. -_-'

The most memorable Resident Evil moment: That dog jumping through the window. And those twisted people even keep you on your toes in the remake until you forget about the dogs...

RE4 has the most interactive game ever, you never put down your controller especially in the movie scene right? look how they manage to come up with a great game that enable the player not to go a bathroom or have a break when its a movie scene coz watch out for those surprise attacks and etc.

you've done a great review shoujoboy.

keep up the good work, truly aprreciate what you're doing.

i think RE4 is good. it is not bad anyway. now lets wait for the RE5, which one is better

I have to agree with rslgto.

Resident Evil 4 is not even an original series (those reading S.D.PERRY works should know). Its basically a side story to have a break from the original series. Yes, its cool to see Leon so mature and having all new controls, but hey, Resident Evil is not Resident Evil without the zombies Aint i right?

Not that i hate resident evil 4, i do love the new controls. It adds to the suspense and horror of the game. I have to agree, its much more scarier than the original series.

Ouh! Regarding RE5! I hope the character is CHRIS! But in the trailer, thye guy has moustache! CHRIS's face is soooo CLEAN! then i had the assumption it could be Billy from Resident Evil 0. Its a good thing RE5 resumes back to zombies but they are ALOT FASTER then the old series's zombies! Looking forward to it!

I have just one complain to the person who wrote this review. If Resident Evil is soo boring, why did you even follow the series? And for your info, the story matter soooo much cos without a SOLID story, the game will be blah!

Aside from that, i forgot to leave a comment about ur review.....i really love it. It has a very original touch to it. Especially the part where u described the new action of how to kill the "modified" human like " If you shoot someone in the head, they reel back holding their heads and you can run up and kick them. If you shoot them in the knee, they will drop down and you can run up and hit them with a suplex."

It makes one imagine the scene and would want to play it! I did play it and it was kinda fun to see you hitting a bullseye on the "modified" humans forehead and the head will go SPLAT! aHAHA! gREAT job!

    =D

Okay first off I'd like to say that the review wasn't bad. You did put some work into it and from what I could see you did try to keep more to a reviews side then to your own personal opinion.

@ Cagalli88: You've done the one mistake that basically everyone else does. Resident Evil/ Biohazard isn't a zombie game. It's a survival tactics game. The only reason the games after the first continued on with the zombies was because having one game about zombies would have been a waste of time and they had left evidence that the next game had to have zombies in it.

Anyway in my own opinion I prefer RE4 over all of them. It's something new and different and has more interaction.

True, RE is a survival tactics game. But it kinda sux right, to have a survival tactics game without any "umph" to it. And the "umph" here referring to zombies. Which basically is what the game is about. And btw, do u read S.D.Perry works? Do you understand the world of Resident Evil? To just slam it by saying "The only reason the games after the first continued on with the zombies was because having one game about zombies would have been a waste of time and they had left evidence that the next game had to have zombies in it" is rude!

Forgive the trite saying, but I think there are two sides to this coin. I agree with rslgto that Resident Evil 4 might have completely ruined the series, given that it is an action game (although I would argue an action/horror one), and did so well, therefore influencing future titles in the same direction. On the other hand, if you take away the title, and everything that's expected from a Resident Evil game, you can't deny that Resident Evil 4 is a touchstone in modern video gaming. There is not another game in any genre that really gives you an experience quite like that of RE4, and I think that's an accomplishment unto itself. For anybody who wants to agree or disagree with me, just so you know, I am biased in that I don't particularly like the style of the traditional Resident Evil games, although I'm curious to try to REmake.
