Story & Characters

Giant robots and pretty girls... what more could you ask for in anime? Alright if someone starts a review that way you may start to wonder exactly what you are about to be in for. Don't worry, I wouldn't lead you astray... intentionally.

Kannazuki no Miko is a about an evil God named Orochi bent on the destruction of the world as we know it by using his eight underlings to hunt down the decendants of the priestesses that sealed him away before. Follow the lives of Himeko and Chikane, the priestesses of the sun and moon as they resurrect an ancient weapon capable of once again sealing the evil Orochi. Protecting these priestesses (more particularly Himeko) is the man named Souma Oogami, who is oddly enough, one of those previously mentioned underlings. He has a serious crush on Himeko and is going against his destiny to kill her. That is the basic premise of the story, but thankfully not the majority of the show.

While the first half of the show is mostly character introduction and episodic battles between Souma and any one of the members of the army of Orochi; the latter half of the series takes on a much more serious and sinister turn. As Chikane deals with her true feelings for Himeko, she begins to develop a hatred towards the object of Himeko's affection, Souma. This of course is used to exploit her by Orochi. What ends up happening is that Chikane now shifts from savior to destroyer now that her heart has been overtaken by darkness. While this may have been done before, it was painstakingly executed here and worked out magnificently. The viewer has to endure all the hardships that the characters face in the end and get treated to a very well executed ending, with some nice twists.

Kannazuki no Miko is not going to revolutionize the way stories are told, but it is a damn entertaining show to watch.

Art

The animation in Kannazuki no Miko is quite impressive. While background animations remain fairly average on the whole, character animations and character designs are quite nicely done. Himeko is your shy, loveable girl and is animated to fit that part very well. Innocent eyes, cute face and always animated so that she just looks squeezable. Chikane has the deep brooding eyes, the dark hair and the elegant movement associated with her high class character. Each of the members of Orochi's army has a very distictive look to them as well. There is a catgirl who looks like a nurse (because when I think death army, I think catgirls in a nurse outfit), an introverted mangaka, a teenage pop idol and of course the bishounen that would make fangirls wet themselves gleefully. All of those characters look fantastic and detailed. Animation was a definite strong point.

Sound

If you are reading this review with any knowledge of KOTOKO, then you can already guess where the score is going here. The opening, closing and an image song (Suppuration) are all done by KOTOKO. KOTOKO is known mostly for work on Onegai Teacher, Onegai Twins and multiple bishoujo games, all of which have a very upbeat and almost techo feel to them. The three songs featured in Kannazuki no Miko are exactly that. With a fast beat and catchy as hell, they certainly are songs that will likely hit people's playlist the instant they hear them. As for the background music of the show, it is quite fitting. There are BGM's for every type of mood or atmosphere and some very melodic piano music in there to sweeten the deal. If you are able to only pull one thing away from this experience, it will likely be the music.

I can also speak pretty highly of the voice acting. The majority of the show focuses on Himeko and Chikane. If either one of the seiyuus for them would have been bad, then the entire show would have suffered tremendously. Thankfully both actors did a great job in bringing out each character's personality. Minor characters were also done well. The cute cat girl had the ~nya at the end of her sentences (which mind you I find annoying, but it fits). My only complaint is that Orochi's evil God voice is so played out at this point. If there is a dark presence in the sky or some evil god, it always... ALWAYS has the same voice. Wouldn't it throw you off to hear a guy that sounds like Mickey Mouse threatening the human race?

Best voice acting award goes to Ayako Kawasumi as Chikane. She displayed the most versatility. She was a very dignified and caring character, and that was brought out superbly. But she could also act out sad scenes with very convincing crying and a true sound of sadness. When Chikane took a turn for the worst and went pure evil, she brought that out so much so that you can actually feel your soul cringe. Yes, I said your soul will cringe. Great job and well deserving of the honor.

Presentation

It seems that of late I am grabbing at shows that have yuri undertones to it. This certainly isn't intentional, but it is somewhat nice. The majority of this show consists of robot battles and the lives of Himeko, Chikane and Souma. Souma has feelings for Himeko, Himeko likewise for him. What makes this more interesting is that Chikane has feelings for Himeko as well. She lives her life to see the smile of the one she loves, which actually has quite a beauty to it. She watches as Himeko goes on dates with Souma, and just sucks up the pain of watching the object of her affection go on a date with someone else. You also get to see her go crazy as her love becomes more and more unrequited. Which is actually where the turning point of the story comes around. Some may consider that a ploy to pick up fanboys or just simply distracting. I found it to be done magnificently and made the relationships between them shine all the more, and made the story that much more interesting.

Love story aside this show is an overall fun ride. It is one of those rare shows that although the episodes are standard length, they feel more like one of those commercial shorts that last only minutes. Time flies when your having fun I guess. Not only that, but it pulled off a solid ending. If there is one thing I've noticed that anime usually faulters at, it's the ending. If you are looking for a fun ride with a few bumps along the road... with a dash of yuri, then snag this one up. If you are tired of the save the world from the evil god, or you think all gays go to hell (you know who you are) then run away and go watch American Idol or something.
