Plot Synopsis

Story & Characters
The main story is basically the adventures of Gene Starwind and his crew of misfits, who one way or another, gain possession of the fastest ship in the galaxy, the XGP, better known as the Outlaw Star. With this, they search for the enigmatic Galactic Leyline, all the while being chased by outlaws and pirates. That's basically the jist of it. At a glance, the story does not seem to be very complicated. Well, it really isn't. But that does not make the value of this series any lower. This series does not attempt to go for originality, but it doesn't have to. What the series IS going for is to be an fun and entertaining series that plays on comedy and action; which, personally, I say it does. The cast, a flurry of various characters with different personalities, have the ability to appeal to any fan, whether it be the unconventional, yet heroic Gene, the silent badass "Twilight Suzuka," or even the loudmouth, hotblooded Aisha. With this also adds for some humorous interaction between different characters, ie. Aisha and Gene. Add into the mix some rather kickass villains as well, and you have yourself conflict which makes for some great battles between both sides.

Art
The art style is very fitting and consistently high through out the series. For the most part, the animation is great. The fast paced action involved with this series is successfully portrayed into unique, fluid, and captivating sequences; this goes especially for the spaceship battle scenes. With the unique grappling abilities (ships are attached with fully functional arms) of some of the ships, brings out the potential for a different way of space battle. Also, character designs are well in line with the type of person the character is. From the mysteriously eery designs of the Anten Seven, to the different character styles of the Outlaw Star crew stringing from their different backgrounds, you get good character designing. Not to mention the women are drawn visually appealing, and you even get your fix of fanservice as well (wink wink to all the Aisha fans).

Sound
The music for the most part tries to blend in with the rapid pace of the anime.
You shouldn't be surprised to hear some triumphant-esque music playing as the
Outlaw Star bursts off into a fight or whatnot. As such, some people may find
the music as a little corny, but regardless, it does get you fired up at times.
The song "Through the Night" can get stuck in your head if you're not
careful
.... Other than the music, the dubbing is surprisingly good. I
wouldn't even call it farfetched to consider this as one of the better dubs
around. I honestly could not think of one character who did not convey the
character accurately. Also, the VA of Fred Lou is hilarious. You'll know what
I'm talking about when you watch the series. Some may be annoyed by Aisha's
screechy voice, but I personally thought it fit well with her. Either way, it
most likely won't affect the overall experience you'll have from the excellent
voice acting.

Presentation
So, what makes the series so great? While Outlaw Star incorporates a lot of the many cliches of the typical sci-fi animes, it presents it so well that in the end the viewer won't even care. I think that this series was overshadowed due to the close time release of Cowboy Bebop. This anime has all the qualities of a good anime, with plentiful action sequences, many comedic moments, and charismatic characters. While the story may seem simple, it allows the story to progress smoothly along. The Outlaw Star crew and its journey to the Galactic Leyline is definitely one hell of a ride. While the series may seem simply as "good" to the veteran anime fans who've "seen it all," Outlaw Star can be seen as a classic by those who first start out with anime, or those who were introduced to anime by Outlaw Star. Whatever the case, it may safely be said that Outlaw Star will be able to interest many, if not most anime fans that are looking for a simple yet fun, entertaining series.

this
review is meant for the anime series ONLY. meh...
Great review. I have seen the series. It is well made and entertaining like you have described.
Fixed.
Good work, by the way. This is a nicely-written review with fairly-allocated scores whose values you certainly justified in your descriptions. Keep it up!
Good review Outlaw Star is one of my favs
Good review and really good descriptions without any major spoilers. which is good for people who haven't watched it yet.
I have to agree with the comment about "Through the Night" getting stuck in the head. My iTunes says I've heard this song 87 time in last 3 months. The opening "Through the Night" and both of the ending songs are really great.
Really good anime go watch for yourself.
Been a while since i watched this one. I also found it very enjoyable and i also noted the great similarities it had to cowboy bebop. Both involves almost broke bounty hunters travelling the solar system picking up travellers, both had to work for meals. Episode structure was also similar, that some were plot based and some were completly random (but still enjoyable). The major difference being that gene uses a gun as his main assault.
are thay ever gunna come out with a 2nd one. pm mw if ya know
lacus
The plot was highly original in my opinion probably due to the fact I don't watch all that many sci-fi animes and such, but I really enjoyed watching Outlaw Star. The storyline could have been better here and there and the art work could use a bit more improvement but the soundtrack is fantastic. I love the opening and ending songs
They're
so catchy. Overall this is a good anime to watch if you're more into action than
anything else
i haven't seen this series in a while. i remember liking it a lot but i cannot find it anywhere! can anyone help me out?
I think the show itself is really good. The only thing I didn't like was that it seemed to just end so suddenly. You go through so many epsiodes then in the last three its all wrapped up so quickly. I think it could have been a little better. But I find it wicked funny and the action is pretty good. I give it a 7 on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best.
I believe they did make something of a follow up to this anime, although it doesnt involve Gene or the Outlaw star (that i know of) Its about the space federation i believe...
Gene starwind is freak'n awsome! >< good review you deserve a cookie! I rememberd they showed it on toonami down in Texas a few years ago. good thing i got them recorded cuz it got canceled!
