Story & Characters

Loveless is a good story but in the anime, certain things were cut out and the whole thing was a little too boring. Ritsuka, was displayed as the mature kid, which he is but don't forget the word "kid". In the anime, his childlike traits were taken away. He was always sad and whenever he got angry... well it didn't seem that dramatic. Ritsuka was a bit of a dissapointment in that respect. He lost the cuteness factor that he had in the manga. Some of the other characters were skewed as well. Soubi lost a lot of his perverse side and Ritsuka's mother wasn't seen in depth. The Zero pair of girls were upgraded in the kissing department though... ^^

Now the action in Loveless... I wouldn't call it action... just interperative dancing. The whole battle system in Loveless is to utilize word and manipulate the environment surrounding you. It was a bunch of pretty words, and was a unique concept but didn't come off as special. No one is going to really get a heart attack from this stuff... unless the chains involved scare someone...

For the romance part, I have to give the thumbs up to the anime. Ritsuka is in elementary school and Soubi is in University... the first thought is *ick*... However, the anime pulls it off, making a sweet confused relationship with all its conflicts as well. There was the whole issue of Master and Servant and then the bits of loyalty and trust within a relationship. The relationship between Soubi and Ritsuka is what really kept me watching the anime. There was the emotional side but also a touch of sexual tension which yet again... was portrayed well and didn't scare the heck out of me.

The ending though... that was just... plain and simple fan appeal... I didn't like it at all... That is all I have to say about that... oh and the filler thing was bad too...

Good story overall but a little lacking as it moves a little slowly and can be dull to people looking for something quick to happen. I happen to like any type of anime so slow moving is good for me... ^_^

Art

O_O Wow... just wow... The animation in Loveless is almost flawless... Seriously, no lie. There is almost never a time that I think the animation is better or equal to the manga, especially when Kouga Yun is drawing it with her new pretty style. Soubi, and I have agreed on this with my friends, looks much *cough* hotter *cough* in the anime.

The battle scenes and all the sparkly effects are great too... Kudos to Loveless and their animation!!! I definitely think that the animation matched the story and brought no shame to the manga... ^___^

Sound

Another thing I loved about Loveless. The Op and Ed were so good... The two themes matched Loveless and its angsty factor. Plus I loved the fact one was fast paced and the other one was slow. These songs actually get me pretty sad... which might be a good mood to lead into the Loveless anime.

Okay, for background music I don't remember too much but I will try... I believe in the fighting scenes, Soubi would have this violin music... Although the scenes of battles weren't amazingly action packed the music kept the situation tense... and I really don't know beyond that... XD

Voicing was a good match if you ask me. Soubi sounded like a cool guy and Ritsuka sounded mature but had the voice of a child who could anger easily. There was no voice I disliked so nothing to argue for here...

Presentation

Don't be afraid of this anime just because it has shounen-ai and an age difference in the main relationship. Lovless is definitely worth trying out. Plus, the eye candy in the animation and the great music is something as an added bonus. This anime isn't something everyone will love but it is definitely not something everyone will hate.

I found the anime very appaling, specially technically-wise. As you say the animation was almost flawless and I liked a lot the colour the series had.
The bad point is the anime cut down a lot of things; it's more an intro to the manga than a story itself. I guess there wasn't enough bugdet and they decided to do something well done instead a longer but worse anime. Still, it's one of the best I saw last year.

Neat review you wrote. I enjoyed watching the anime and really hoping that they'll make a second season of it since the anime ended just as the story was getting interesting.

Loveless is awsome! I love kitty boys!

  4. sadotsu Feb 23, 2006

I totally loved this anime. The whole combination of the muted, almost watercolour style art, the soft and succinct voice-acting, the battle scenes, the angst, it was all incredibly moving.

I loved the anime Loveless i never seen the manga thow i realy wish i could it sounds intresting!>.<! i think the last ep. of loveless was kinda weird they never explained all the unexplaned in the anime (if u under stand what i mean). im also still wondering is Ritsuka's brother alive or dead? and why does Ritsuka's mom think hes not Ritsuka?

I really love this anime for the extreme cuteness in it...
However, some important parts in the manga weren'r focused on the series, and I loved the manga ritsuka more than the anime one 'cause he's so damn sarcastic ^.^

I've watched only the anime. I liked it very much but as I see the manga could be better. I like the colours and the watercolour-like scenery and I like the characters moving. But I'd like to read the manga. I've found some information but not much. For example I dont't know how many manga volumes there are and if the anime ends where the manga does.

I'm sad because I haven't found the manga in the shops I know. :(

I haven't read the manga, but I think I understand you feelings about Ritsuka not being a kid. Sometimes it annoyed me that they went out of their way just to show that he was not your typical boy but someone much much better and mature and such. It felt forced, because (and in this I don't agree with you) other times he was really cute and very childlike in his ways.
For the most part, a great review, I agree with you on almost everything. Soubi is indeed hot *grins*

pd. You didn't comment the beginning of chapters, which are very strange and unique, with french softly sung in that very special female voice and very angsty melancholic background scenes.
