Story & Characters

Based off the popular shoujo manga by Koge Donbo, "Pita Ten" brings a new and hilarious take on your average angel’s tale. It starts off like any normal day in the life of Higuchi Koutarou as he prepares to leave for school. However, the moment he steps out he encounters Misha who he learns later is actually an angel in training. “Please go out with me!” were the first words exchanged between the two. From that point on Koutarou’s normal school days are now over…~ These weird events are commonplace in Pita Ten, especially with the quirky cast of characters ranging from a sweetest demon you will ever meet to a cat eared schoolgirl with superhuman strength. The story is fairly episodic, focusing more on character development rather than an actual plot (which in itself is pretty thin). But that in itself is a good thing since it’s the cast characters that gives Pita Ten it’s charm. Though there is a plot, it’s more along the lines of a overlying theme that plays out in many episodes, a theme of how one deals with the those who are long gone… Although it may seem like a too mature subject for a cutesy show to handle, it does an great job incorporating all the pieces together and presenting it a sweet and enjoyable story ^^

Art

The artwork of Pita Ten is, simply put, super cute~ Indeed that is one of Koge Donbo’s trademarks as he also have designed the characters for Digi Charat and Snow Fairy Sugar, two other overly cute shows you should consider if that is to your liking. Overall, the characters attractively designed, especially Misha with her many angelic outfits and Shia’s casual line of cutesy dresses. (finally an animation studios that realizes people don’t wear the same clothes every single day) The background environment is colorful and well detailed. During scenes where Misha becomes an angel, the heavenly lighting effects used suits it perfectly. All in all, the animation is nicely done and consistent with quality throughout the series. I would recommend purchasing the R2 DVDs to fully appreciate the vibrant animation and characters~

Sound

The OST is by no means revolutionary. In fact it's as ordinary as they come, nothing really defining nor original. It does, however, compliment the mood set by the story wonderfully. The background music is very cheerful and pleasing to the ears. I particularly love how they open episodes with a single instrument playing variations of the main song, it adds a sweet simplicity to the nature of the story. Each character also has their own track which compliment their nature nicely. The OP is hauntingly catchy, though others may find it unbearable to hear, it fits well with the cutesy theme~~~ The voice casting is one of my favorite aspects of the series. Each character had a distinctive and memorable voice, particularly Misha with her odd speech pattern of adding ~su at the ending of every sentence. And for a character driven story like Pita Ten, small unique difference like these are absolutely essential.

Presentation

When I started watching Pita Ten, I was slightly put off by the overly cutesy style and themes. But as I continued to watch I began to see the individual differences of each character and their charm; especially of Kotarou whose independent personality I can really identify with despite his relatively young age. Pita Ten is a cutesy anime, make no mistake at that. If you can’t stand overly cute anime, this might not be your cup of coffee. However, if you let your predisposition dictate what you watch, then you’ll be missing out on a heartwarming and enjoyable story. The music is cheerful and uplifting, the characters simply unforgettable. It’s funny moments will leave you laughing even though it’s obviously intended for a younger audience.
